100,000 Expected To Take Pro-Palestine Demands To Biden’s Doorstep

A coalition of Muslim and pro-Palestine organizations are taking the overwhelmingly popular demand for a ceasefire straight to Biden’s doorstep on January 13, at 1 pm, at the Freedom Plaza in Washington, DC. The “March for Gaza” is being organized by the American Muslim Task Force on Palestine, which includes American Muslims for Palestine, Council on American-Islamic Relations, Islamic Circle of North America, Muslim American Society, Muslim Student Association-National, Muslim Legal Fund of America, Muslim Ummah of North America, and Young Muslims, alongside the ANSWER Coalition, which played a key role in organizing the largest pro-Palestine demonstration in US history on November 4.

Israeli officials are gearing up for the hearing in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) tomorrow after South Africa filed a lawsuit in December accusing Tel Aviv of committing genocidal actions against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. The ICJ hearings will broadcast live on Thursday and Friday. Unrestrained U.S. backing of Israeli military actions and bombardment in Gaza has immunized Tel Aviv from any scrutiny under UN resolutions. The ICJ ruling could end up as another international law that Israel does not respect. However, there is a high expectation for the Hague-based court to hold Israel accountable this time and implement a permanent ceasefire.

Pro-Palestinian Protesters Shut Down Three Bridges, Holland Tunnel

Hundreds of people were arrested after pro-Palestinian protesters from several advocacy groups shut down the Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan Bridge, Williamsburg Bridge and Holland Tunnel for more than an hour during the Monday morning commute, NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Public Information Tarik Sheppard said. Traffic was at a standstill at each of the four entry points to the city beginning at around 9:30 a.m., according to a NYPD spokesperson. By 11:15 a.m., police had arrested protesters at the various protests and traffic had resumed at the city's bridges and tunnel, a police spokesperson said.

Palestinians, Supporters Demand City Council Call For Cease-Fire

Charleston, West Virginia - Over 200 Palestinian and pro-Palestine activists packed a City Council meeting in Charleston, West Virginia’s capital, on Jan. 3. The crowd attended the meeting in anticipation of a vote regarding a cease-fire resolution previously proposed by progressive City Councilmember Joe Solomon, with the support of Palestinian constituents. Solomon, the only Jewish member of the 26-member City Council, is an outspoken opponent of the ongoing genocide in occupied Palestine. The purpose of the resolution was to pressure the U.S. Congress to stop funding the continuous murder of Palestinian people.

California Assembly Shut Down By Protest For Cease-Fire In Palestine

Sacramento - On the day California lawmakers returned to Sacramento for the new year, hundreds of protesters convened at the state Capitol on Wednesday and shut down the Assembly with calls for Israel to stop its war against Hamas. Legislators filed out of the Assembly chamber as at least 250 demonstrators chanted, “Cease fire now.” Filling the Capitol rotunda, protesters unfurled a banner stating “No U.S. Funding for Israel’s Genocide in Palestine” and made paper flowers representing more than 22,000 Palestinians killed in the war that began after Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, killing about 1,200 people and taking 240 others hostage.

Twelve weeks into the Israeli rampage in the Gaza Strip, airstrikes continue to flatten the small Palestinian territory, killing dozens as fighting rages on between Israeli ground forces and Palestinian resistance fighters. Deadly Israeli airstrikes were reported since Thursday afternoon in Rafah and Khan Younis in southern Gaza, as well as in the Nuseirat, al-Bureij, and al-Maghazi refugee camps in central Gaza, and in Beit Hanoun and the Gaza City neighborhood of Sheikh Radwan in northern Gaza. The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza reported at midday on Friday that at least 187 people had been killed and 312 wounded in the span of 24 hours, raising the total toll to at least 21,507 killed and at least 55,915 wounded in the Gaza Strip since October 7.

The entire Palestine solidarity movement in North America has united behind the demand of a ceasefire in Gaza. For the first time in years, organizations of the working class such as labor unions have been united against the status quo of Western foreign policy and taken an unprecedented stance against Israeli violence. At the same time, important sectors in the movement have been trying to push the demands even further. The Palestinian Youth Movement, a major international formation of Palestinian youth with significant presence across North America, has been working to push the movement beyond dreaming of an end to current aggression, and into demanding full liberation from Israeli occupation.

Malaysian Activists Hold Six-Day ‘Siege For Palestine’ Near US Embassy

More than 100 Malaysians have joined a sit-in demonstration outside the US embassy in Kuala Lumpur, in solidarity with Palestine and in response to the continued US veto to attempts for a ceasefire in the ongoing Israeli war on Gaza. The Kepung Demi Palestin or the “Siege for Palestine” demonstration is organized by the Palestine Solidarity Secretariat (SSP), a coalition of 48 groups, including political parties from both the ruling and opposition coalitions, civil society groups, and youth and student movements. The six-day long sit-in began on the evening of Tuesday, December 26, with dozens participating in the demonstrations despite rain and obstruction by the police.

There is a difference between the Qatari proposal and the Egyptian proposal, which aims for a cease-fire. The Qatari proposal was presented by the head of the Mossad [Israel’s Intelligence and Special Operations] which was presented to the leadership of the Hamas movement, which stressed the need to remove the barriers and return the population to the cities of the north. The Hamas movement presented a clear position emphasizing that negotiations will not take place until the aggression against our people stops and aid enters the Gaza Strip, after which the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip will be negotiated.

The UN Security Council postponed for the second time a vote on a ceasefire resolution in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday. The resolution was initially scheduled for a vote on Monday. However, Security Council members are debating the draft’s wording to avoid another U.S. veto. On December 8, the U.S. rejected a ceasefire call, while the UK abstained. U.S. foreign officials warned that support for Israel’s bombardment of the Gaza Strip is isolating Washington from its allies and could cost it diplomatically in the long run. On Tuesday, the National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby confirmed that the U.S. is “still working through the modalities of the resolution.”

Activists from more than 80 advocacy groups took to Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday to protest what they called the Israeli genocide in Palestine and "cruel" immigration policies here in the United States. The demonstrators demanded a permanent cease-fire in Gaza, an end to American military aid for Israel, and protection for migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border. "As the Biden administration and Senate Democrats indicate a willingness to advance cruel immigration proposals in order to pass a spending package that will send billions of dollars to Israel to continue its genocide in Gaza, we come together as a coalition of immigrant, Palestinian, and allied organizations dedicated to fighting for justice and liberation.

Largest Health Workers Union In United States Calls For Ceasefire

The largest health workers’ union in the United States, Service Employees International Union Local 1199, just joined the global movement for a ceasefire. Representing over 450,000 working and retired healthcare industry workers, SEIU 1199 is now the second largest union in the US to call for a ceasefire, behind the United Auto Workers. “We reject the notion that Israel’s attacks on hospitals filled with patients, apartment blocks filled with families, and the deaths of 11,000+ Palestinian women and children are acceptable collateral damage,” reads 1199’s statement. “We urge an immediate ceasefire.” With this statement, the local builds on an anti-war legacy.

Interns Accuse Congress Of Suppressing Calls For Cease-Fire

Congressional interns and fellows released a letter on Monday accusing Congress of having “suppressed and ignored” a tidal wave of constituent support for a permanent cease-fire in the Israel-Gaza conflict. More than 140 interns and fellows signed the letter, and 71 disclosed the number of calls and emails in support of a cease-fire that their offices have recorded. Those 71 offices (out of the total of 535) have received a total of 693,170 messages supporting a cease-fire since Israel’s bombing of the Gaza Strip began in early October. But in spite of constituents’ outreach, most senators and representatives have refused to publicly support a cease-fire.

UNGA Discusses Gaza Ceasefire After US Veto In Security Council

The United Nation General Assembly is meeting on Tuesday, December 12 in an emergency session to discuss the Israeli war in Gaza. This is after Egypt and Mauritania jointly invoked the rarely-used resolution 377 A (V) on Monday. The move follows the failure of the UN Security Council last week to adopt a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza due to a US veto. The Uniting for Peace resolution was invoked by Egypt as the chair of the Arab group in the UN and Mauritania as the chair of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. The resolution was first adopted by the General Assembly in November 1950 during the Korean War making itself an alternative platform to work for peace in case the permanent members of the Security Council fail to execute the fundamental task of the international body.

Anti-Genocide Protestors Arrested At US Capitol

U.S. Capitol police arrested demonstrators calling for the end of U.S. support for Israel’s genocide on Monday. The demonstrators, chanting “Free Palestine” and “Stop the Genocide” were standing in the courtyard of the Hart Senate Building on Capitol Hill on Monday when they were arrested by Capitol police.
