‘Uniting For Peace’ Is Next Step In Invoking Genocide Convention Process

Following the latest orders from the International Court of Justice that Israel halt its military offensive in Rafah, some claimed that while the orders of the Court are of course binding, there’s “no enforcement mechanism.” The Court’s orders were of course the result of South Africa’s invoking the Genocide Convention against Israel and its repeated requests for additional orders from the ICJ. In fact, there is such an enforcement mechanism — it’s the UN Security Council. The ICJ is a court that issues orders. The UNSC should act like a sheriff which implements those orders. The problem of course is that the US government has misused its veto power to prevent the UNSC from actually ensuring security, vetoing numerous resolutions on Palestine since October.

Baltimore, MD - Over the past few days, the University has sent emails to the JHU student body and faculty attempting to paint the encampment as unwilling to enter negotiations. This framing by the University is incredibly dishonest: an hours long, closed-door meeting is not the only way to negotiate. Since the beginning of the encampment, we have repeatedly asked that the University send us negotiation offers by email, which they have consistently refused to do. To say we refuse to negotiate until Tuesday is plainly untrue. Our request to begin via email is for a variety of reasons.

Gaza Truce Deal Falters As Israel Insists On More War

Efforts to reach an agreement for a truce and prisoner exchange in the Gaza Strip have been faltering, as Israel is refusing to accept a permanent ceasefire and end to the war. Sources told Al-Mayadeen on 5 May that “negotiations face a major obstacle due to the Israeli refusal to adhere to a permanent ceasefire.” They added that Hamas is insisting on written guarantees that a deal will include a permanent ceasefire. Despite this, Egyptian outlet Cairo TV said on Sunday that there is a “positive” atmosphere regarding the talks. A Hamas official told CBS on the same day that the talks made no progress.

One does not need to be a fortune-teller to understand that the Israel-U.S. game plan for Gaza runs something like this: In public, Biden appears “tough” on Netanyahu, urging him not to “invade” Rafah and pressuring him to allow more “humanitarian aid” into Gaza. But already the White House is preparing the ground to subvert its own messaging. It insists that Israel has offered an “extraordinarily generous” deal to Hamas – one that, Washington suggests, amounts to a ceasefire. It doesn’t. According to reports, the best Israel has offered is an undefined “period of sustained calm”. Even that promise can’t be trusted.

Galloway became the first member of the party to be elected to Parliament in February representing Rochdale, outside Manchester.

The Gaza-based Palestinian health ministry announced that 153 Palestinians were killed and 60 wounded by Israeli forces’ ongoing strikes on the Gaza Strip over the past 24 hours. Meanwhile, local media sources reported that Israeli forces continued to conduct airstrikes on different parts of Khan Younis, after having withdrawn from the city. In the town of al-Qarara, north of the city, an Israeli airstrike reportedly wounded several Palestinians. In Rafah, medical sources reported recovering two Palestinians killed in the al-Tanour neighborhood by an Israeli airstrike.

Colombia President Threatens To Break Relations With Israel

Colombian President, Gustavo Petro, warned on Tuesday that Colombia will break diplomatic relations with Israel if it does not comply with the recent resolution of the United Nations Security Council, which demands a ceasefire in Gaza, Anadolu Agency reports. “If Israel does not comply with the United Nations ceasefire resolution, we will break diplomatic relations with Israel,” Petro published on his X account. Israel’s response to the Colombian President’s statement did not take long. The country’s Foreign Minister, Israel Katz, responded on X that Petro´s “support” of Hamas is a “disgrace to the Colombian people.”

The Biden administration deserves no praise for abstaining from a United Nations Security Council resolution which demands that Israel observe a two week long ceasefire in Gaza. The U.S. vetoed numerous resolutions already, and was forced into doing the barest of minimums because of domestic and international political pressure. In recent weeks, Joe Biden made an odd and obviously staged public statement on the floor of congress, claiming to have been angry with Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Leaked stories to the media made the same assertion, that Biden referred to Netanyahu as an “asshole” even as he continued to pour military aid into Israel.

Protests In Support Of Gaza Ceasefire Continue For Fourth Day

Large-scale protests in solidarity with Palestine continued for the fourth day in Morocco, Jordan, and several other countries in the Arab world on Thursday, March 28. The protesters continued to demand a complete boycott of Israel and an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. In Morocco, protesters flocked the streets of Casablanca, Meknes, and other cities early on Thursday, waving Palestinian flags and calling for an immediate ceasefire as per the UN Security Council resolution adopted earlier this week. They also denounced Israel’s continued genocide in Gaza and reiterated the demand to terminate all normalization processes with it.

The UN Security Council passed a resolution on Monday calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, almost six months after Israel’s assault on the Strip began. The resolution was adopted after the U.S. abstained, in a marked shift from its previous positions, where it had vetoed three ceasefire resolution attempts in the past months. Last week, Russia and China vetoed a proposed ceasefire resolution presented by the U.S. The resolution called for the unconditional release of the remaining Israeli captives in the Gaza Strip as a precondition for the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza.

Russia and China vetoed a US-authored resolution in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on March 22 on the situation in Gaza. The text “determines the imperative for an immediate and sustained ceasefire” stopping short of an explicit call for a halt to Israel’s six-month long attack on besieged Gaza that has killed almost 32,000 Palestinians. The US authored the resolution after vetoing three successive UNSC resolutions on Gaza, including a February 20 resolution presented by Algeria that had called for an immediate ceasefire.

Our union, the United Electrical, Radio & Machine Workers of America (UE), was able to mobilize quickly on this critical issue because we have a strong tradition of international solidarity and taking a critical view of U.S. foreign policy. When Israel launched its brutal assault on the people of Palestine in the wake of the unconscionable Hamas attack of October 7, the UE leadership recognized that this was an issue that the labor movement had to take action on.

Sayyed Abdulmalik al-Houthi, leader of Yemen’s Ansar Allah, said on Thursday, March 14 that his country’s armed forces will expand their attacks against ships moving to Israel from the Red Sea region to the whole of Indian ocean. Stating that attacks on Israeli ships in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb will continue until there is a in Gaza, al-Houthi declared that “we [now] aim to prevent ships associated with the Israeli enemy from crossing [Indian] Ocean towards South Africa and the Cape of the Good Hope” as well. He warned that international shipping companies should take Ansar Allah’s declaration seriously and avoid any links with Israel as “any ship linked to Israel is vulnerable to Yemeni missiles.”

Most Palestinians are unable to reach the al- Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem for the first Friday prayers of the Holy Month of Ramadan. “The portion of the community that is allowed is very small — people who are above the age of 55,” Mustafa Barghouti, secretary general of the Palestinian National Initiative, told Al Jazeera from Ramallah, adding that even they had to go through a hard process to enter the holy site. Given that only men ages 55 and older and women aged 50 and older could be given permission to enter East Jerusalem and the al-Aqsa Mosque compound, the percentage of Palestinians who have a hope of accessing the holy site is extremely small.
