Climate Change

2019 Is The Year To Embrace Energy Democracy – Or Face Social And Climate Breakdown

2018 was a thunderous year for the climate which gave us a glimpse of the new normal: record-breaking heat, a blazing Arctic, the northern hemisphere seemingly on fire. These, alongside a clanging alarm about the disastrous impacts of 1.5°C of global warming from the UN in October, contributed to growing public recognition that climate breakdown is very real and its effects serious. 2018 also saw growing momentum for climate movements in confronting political inaction. From the Extinction Rebellion movement in the UK, to thousands of school children on strike in Australia (and similar movements elsewhere). Climate demonstrations in Europe bigger than ever.

‘If the Water Is Rising, Then So Must We’: Indigenous Peoples March In Washington Against Global Injustice

"It's a collective cry for help because we're in a time of crisis," said one organizer. "Indigenous people from around the world are suffering from the same colonization." In an event described as "breathtaking, heartbreaking, strong, and beautiful," representatives from native communities around the world came together in Washington, D.C. on Friday for the first-ever Indigenous Peoples March. Organized as a rebuke to the violence and injustices that Indigenous Peoples often face—from the murder of native girls and women to police brutality to having unceded tribal lands torn away by colonizing governments and fossil fuel corporations—the march kicked off Friday morning outside the U.S. Interior Department.

Youth Climate Leaders Occupy Schumer’s Office To Demand Support For Green New Deal

"Real climate leadership means a commitment to bold climate action and a just transition. It means a Green New Deal." Keeping up the pressure on the Democratic leadership to embrace bold and popular solutions that are aligned with the science, youth climate leaders on Thursday occupied the D.C. office of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y) to demand that he either show true leadership by supporting a Green New Deal or "step aside." "Real climate leadership means a commitment to bold climate action and a just transition.

Thousands Participate In Youth-For-Climate March In Brussels

Some 12,500 demonstrators participated in a march organised in Brussels by students who stayed away from school on Thursday to press for a more ambitious policy on climate change, according to the spokesman of the local police. Thursday’s march dwarfed a first demonstration organised on Thursday last by the group, Youth for Climate, that attracted about 3,000 young Dutch-speaking participants. This time around, young French-speaking Belgians also joined the protest. “It’s great to see the number of people present here today,” said march organiser Anuna De Wever. “It’s an incredible signal. This cannot be ignored.”

See You In Court, Citizens Tell Governments On Climate Change

BARCELONA, Jan 17 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Environmentalists in France and Ireland are pushing forward with legal cases aimed at forcing their governments to step up action on climate change, motivated by a 2018 flagship ruling that the Netherlands must cut emissions faster to keep its people safe. In October, a Dutch appeals court said the government had "done too little to prevent the dangers of climate change and is doing too little to catch up", ordering it to ensure planet-warming emissions are at least 25 percent below 1990 levels by the end of 2020.

Global Commission Calls For A Food Revolution To Solve World’s Climate & Nutrition Problems

An ambitious report on the global food system from a commission convened by the prestigious medical journal The Lancet calls for a radical change in food production—or, as one of the authors put it: "Nothing less than a new global agricultural revolution." It's the latest research to emphasize that the futures of the climate and human health are deeply intertwined. In order to meaningfully reduce greenhouse gas emissions and stabilize the climate, the world needs a "comprehensive shift" in its diet, the authors say. "The dominant diets that the world has been producing and eating for the past 50 years are no longer nutritionally optimal, are a major contributor to climate change, and are accelerating erosion of natural biodiversity,"

Earth Strike Protests Build Toward Sept. 27th General Strike On Climate Change

Climate protests under the label #EarthStrike were held all over the world on January 15. Earth Strike is a grassroots movement that focuses on building toward a general strike to tackle climate change through withholding our labor. The worldwide protests are important for to spread the message but are merely instrumental to their mission of building toward a worker's general strike. These protests and strikes are not people pleading for sympathy, but displaying political power. Earth Strike has scheduled protests throughout 2019 to raise awareness for a global general strike, which will begin on September 27.

The Green New Deal Is Happening In China

One of the Trump administration’s talking points about global warming is that we’re reducing greenhouse gas emissions, while the countries that remain in the Paris accord are not. Well, the first part of this story is clearly not true, as data for 2018 show a large rise in emissions for the United States. The second part is also not very accurate, as most other countries are taking large steps to reduce emissions. At the top of the list is China. The country has undertaken a massive push to convert to electric powered vehicles and clean energy sources.

Uniting For A Green New Deal

Support is growing in the United States for a Green New Deal. Though there are competing visions for what that looks like, essentially, a Green New Deal includes a rapid transition to a clean energy economy, a jobs program and a stronger social safety net. We need a Green New Deal for many reasons, most obviously the climate crisis and growing economic insecurity. Each new climate report describes the severe consequences of climate change with increasing alarm and the window of opportunity for action is closing. At the same time, wealth inequality is also growing.

Raising The Bar On The Green New Deal

There’s a lot of talk lately about the Green New Deal. The phrase was first used in the US by Howie Hawkins , the Green party candidate for governor in New York state in 2010, 2014 and 2018. Howie says he stole it from the European Greens who’d been intrigued by the old American New Deal of the 1930s under Franklin Roosevelt. European Greens wanted to regulate the banking sector, something we can't seem to do here. They wanted to raise wages, to shorten working weeks, to stimulate the economy with massive infrastructure upgrades and repair, and to pay for the whole thing with higher taxes on the rich, all of that straight out of the playbook of the 1930s, plus putting the economies of their countries on a path to zero emissions .

Indigenous Leaders Support A Green New Deal

True environmental and historical justice necessitates that new climate policy not only ensure heavy investment in green jobs and infrastructure for Indigenous communities, but that it directly involve leadership and input from Native people. An Indigenized Green New Deal is our best legislative shot at creating an equitable and just transition to a climate-conscious future that both acknowledges and amends the errors of our country’s past. By ensuring that Indigenous values, voices, and lands are adequately represented, we can ensure a livable climate for the next seven generations and beyond.

More Than 600 Groups Tell Congress To Build Green Economy

Washington, D.C. – More than 600 environmental groups today called on the U.S. House of Representatives to pursue ambitious climate legislation that matches the scale and urgency of the climate crisis. The groups’ letter calls for a thoughtful phaseout of fossil fuel production, a transition to 100 percent renewable energy by 2035, complete decarbonization of the transportation system, use of the Clean Air Act to reduce greenhouse gas pollution, a just transition to a new green economy and the adherence to treaties upholding Indigenous rights when pursuing these actions.

The Violence Of Bill Blocks & Shutdowns + Whimsical Resistance At The Border

Here's what climate refugees need to make it through a disaster. How would you fare? --- Next up, how the government shutdown targets survivors of domestic and sexual violence – plus the age-old story of colonial oppression gets a reboot via an outgoing Representative's bill block. Finally, Elizabeth Vega joins us to talk about the Tornillo occupation – and how to address the rise of imprisoned migrant children and families.

Democratic Leaders Failed Their First Big Test On Climate

The science on climate change is clear: All countries desperately need to restructure fossil fuels out of their economies. Naturally, the Trump administration has recklessly ignored this evidence. In every way, it’s tried to make it easier to extract and burn fossil fuels — and harder to hold polluters of all stripes accountable. But what about the other side in Washington? Unfortunately, Democratic leaders are also acting like they don’t understand the urgency of the problem. After the election, youth activists occupied the offices of Democratic leaders to demand a special congressional committee to plan for a Green New Deal.

Supreme Court Denies ExxonMobil Effort To Conceal Climate Documents

(Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday cleared the way for the attorney general of Massachusetts to obtain records from Exxon Mobil Corp to probe whether the oil company for decades concealed its knowledge of the role fossil fuels play in climate change. The justices declined to hear Exxon’s appeal of a ruling by the top court in Massachusetts holding that state Attorney General Maura Healey, a Democrat, had jurisdiction to seek records to probe whether the company misled consumers and investors. The high court’s action marked the latest setback for Exxon in its efforts to halt the Massachusetts investigation and a similar one by New York’s attorney general, who in October filed a lawsuit against the company.
