Far-Right And Left Face Off In Second Round Of Presidential Elections

José Antonio Kast of the far-right Christian Social Front and Gabriel Boric of the left-wing Approve Dignity coalition won the first round of the presidential elections held in Chile on November 21. They will now face off in the run-off on December 19. According to the results released by the Chile’s Electoral Service (SERVEL), with 100% of the votes counted, Kast obtained 27.91% of the votes, while Boric closely followed him with 25.83% of the votes.

The liberal and Democratic Party elites have seized on the January 6 mob assault on the US Capitol as the domestic equivalent of the 9/11 attacks. Joe Biden called the storming of the Capitol “the worst attack on our democracy since the Civil War.” Representative Liz Cheney, a right-wing Republican whose animus towards Donald Trump has seen her join forces with the Democratic Party leadership, said the forces behind January 6 represent “a threat America has never seen before.” The enabling resolution that created the select committee that is investigating the events of January 6 called the mob assault “one of the darkest days of our democracy.” The hyperventilating about the incursion into the Capitol, often described by its critics as an attempted insurrection and coup, has effectively shut down questions about the response to the incident.

After the 2016 general election, which saw Hillary Clinton defeated by Donald Trump, Democrats scrambled for someone to blame other than themselves. Rather than reflect on their many betrayals of the working class that once made up the core of their voting base, Democrats and their most fervent media allies quickly pointed the finger at an old enemy: Russia. What became known as the “Steele dossier,” which MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow breathlessly claimed was based on “deep cover sources inside Russia,” was widely reported in mass media. It now turns out, according to the Justice Department indictment released this week, the contents of the dossier were in fact a deliberately concocted lie now denounced as a fraud by the FBI.

Managua, Nicaragua - Less than a week before Nicaragua’s presidential election, social media giant Facebook deleted the accounts of hundreds of the country’s top news outlets, journalists and activists, all of whom supported the ruling left-wing Sandinista government, a top Washington target for regime change. Facebook claims that these accounts were bots engaged in “inauthentic behavior.” Considering that around half of the country uses the platform for news and entertainment, the decision could barely have been more heavy-handed and intrusive. However, early reports show that if their goal was to swing the result, it has failed badly and the Sandinistas have achieved an overwhelming victory.

Despite Western media and politicians labelling the Nicaraguan general election a “sham” and “parody,” citizens turned out in large numbers to cast their votes on Sunday, and also to show they reject foreign meddling. According to preliminary results, over 65 percent of voters turned out, 75 percent of whom cast their ballots on November 7 for Sandinista leader Daniel Ortega, securing him a fourth consecutive presidential term. For many Nicaraguans, especially the poor and working people, the choice is an obvious one

First Official Results Confirm Re-Election Of Ortega

In the early hours of Monday, Nicaragua’s Supreme Electoral Council (CSE) President Brenda Rocha released the first official results of the presidential elections held on Sunday. After saying that the Nicaraguan people "have been the protagonists of the country's historic civic celebration," she announced the results of the votes counted at the national and provincial levels. With 49.25 percent of the votes counted so far, President Daniel Ortega, who ran for reelection of the position, achieved 74.99 percent of the votes. These results will allow the Santinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) leader to exercise his fifth non-consecutive term from 2022 to 2027.

Keeping republicans, the white party, out of power is seen as the end all and be all of political action. When the democrats are represented by Black office holders the deception is magnified. The demonization of even a little bit of progressive talk is a sign that the system lives in fear that someone may come along who will actually fight for change. Twelve years have passed since the fateful 2009 coup in Honduras by the oligarchy, private companies and the leaders of the Catholic and evangelical churches. How can you forget Cardinal Oscar Andrés Rodríguez supporting the coup and asking the constitutional president of Honduras, Manual Zelaya Rosales, not to return to Honduras, his own country, in which he was democratically elected by the people? We cannot and should never forget that the coup was supported by the U.S. government, at that time headed by Democratic President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. “It feels like we are at the end of an era,” Bárbara Sepúlveda tells me on October 12, 2021. Sepúlveda is a member of Chile’s Constitutional Convention and of the Communist Party of Chile. The era to which Sepúlveda refers is that of General Augusto Pinochet, who led the US-backed coup in 1973 that overthrew the popularly elected government of president Salvador Allende. During the Pinochet era, the military acted with impunity, and the left was assassinated and sent into exile—while big business (both Chilean and foreign) received all the blessings of the dictatorship. That’s the era that has slowly been sputtering to a halt since Pinochet’s removal in 1990 and since the Chilean people voted to throw out the dictatorship’s constitution of 1980 and write a new one.

People are afraid. People have a very reverent attitude toward the Armed Forces, which are understood as guardian institutions of the nation. But a nation does not have tutelage; a democracy does not accept tutelage [rule by the state apparatus]. People do not know, and besides, nobody dares to say that the tanks, the rifles and the ships are ours. They do not belong to the marines or the military: they are ours; they have been bought with our money. The military are public servants, so we have no reason to serve them. But in Peru there is an inverse criterion sponsored by the Armed Forces themselves. Throughout history we have been taught that they are institutions of protection against which you cannot say anything. You can say anything you want against the Bar Association, against the Medical Association, against the Judiciary, but nothing against the Navy, nor against the Army, nor against the Air Force. And I, modestly, as a common citizen, ask myself: Why?

Pedro Castillo Has Been Elected President Of Peru

Leftist candidate Pedro Castillo has been formally declared as President-elect of Peru, by the country’s National Electoral Court (JNE), after a month of delays due to baseless claims of ‘fraud’ by far-right candidate Keiko Fujimori. Hours before the official announcement, the JNE stated that they had rejected appeals by Fujimori to annul the results of the June 6th vote. In response, Fujimori vowed to accept the results but insisted that declaring Castillo as the winner is ‘illegitimate’. “Today I announce that in fulfilling my commitment to all Peruvians, to Mario Vargas Llosa, to the international community, I will acknowledge the results because it is demanded by the law and the constitution that I have sworn to defend…the defense of democracy does not end with the illegitimate promulgation of Pedro Castillo, this defense has just begun”, said the defeated candidate.

Half an hour’s taxi ride from the House of Pizarro, the presidential palace in Lima, Peru, is a high-security prison at the Callao naval base. The prison was built to hold leaders of Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path), particularly Abimael Guzmán. Not far from Guzmán’s cell is that of Vladimiro Montesinos, intelligence chief under former President Alberto Fujimori, who is also now imprisoned. Montesinos was sentenced to a 20-year prison term in 2006 for embezzlement, influence peddling, and abuse of power. Now, audio files from phone calls made by Montesinos from his prison indicate an attempt to influence the results of Peru’s presidential election after Pedro Castillo, the candidate of the left-wing Perú Libre party, won the election. By the evening of June 6, 2021, Peru’s National Jury of Elections should have declared Pedro Castillo the winner of the presidential election.
