Contaminated Water Requires National Public Health Action

By Drs. Jill Stein and Margaret Flowers for TruthOut. Most people in the United States know about the accident at the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in March 1979. Although the official reports stated that an "insignificant" amount of radiation was released (this understatement has since been refuted), it is called "America's worst nuclear accident." Very few people know about the actual worst nuclear accident in the United States, which happened three months later in Church Rock, New Mexico. Perhaps this is because it mostly impacted people of the Navajo (Diné) Nation. On July 16, 1979, the wall of a tailings pond for a uranium mill broke open and released 93 million gallons of radioactive waste into the Arroyo Pipeline, a tributary to the Puerco River. The waste traveled 80 miles down the Puerco River into Arizona. Not only is it amazing that this spill was not reported in the media, but it is also remarkable that the governor of New Mexico refused to issue a state of emergency.

The Florida House of Representatives voted 73-45 on Jan. 27 to approve abill that opens the door to fracking by 2017 after the state studies the environmental and public health risks. Next, the bill requires state regulators to draft rules governing the practice, which could begin in 2018 or 2019. This is the third time in three years the Florida House has passed a version of this bill.

By Staff of Action Network - Earlier this year, Carling Sothoron and Heather Doyle climbed and hung a banner from a crane at the construction site for Dominion Resources's fracked gas export facility near Cove Point, Maryland. During the extraction and arrest, both Carling and Heather, who are expert climbers, experienced an unsafe extraction by the Calvert County Sheriff's Office and Heather was assaulted during her arrest. After the court proceedings for their action Heather filed an official complaint about their treatment. Instead of holding its officers accountable, Calvert County is now prosecuting Heather for “making false statements to an officer”.

The Dominion Cove Point liquefied natural gas export terminal is the centerpiece of the fracked-gas infrastructure build-out currently underway in the mid-Atlantic US. The gas industry is tying much of its financial future to exports, and Cove Point, Maryland, is the place it has selected to liquefy the gas, put it on tankers, and bring it around the world. However, a broad movement has been fighting the gas industry every step of the way — to stop this export terminal at Cove Point, the tangled web of pipelines and compressor stations, export terminals in other places, and where the gas is pulled from the ground.

Offshore Fracking Moratorium Now In Effect Off California’s Coast

The lawsuit alleged that federal regulators “rubber-stamped permits” without enough consideration for fracking’s impacts on coastal communities and wildlife, the Associated Press (AP) reported. The settlement directs the U.S. Department of the Interior to conduct an environmental assessment of offshore fracking by May 28. There will be a 30-day public comment period on the draft assessment.

Fracking Operation Closed Indefinitely After Earthquake

By Staff of CBC News. Alberta, Canada - A hydraulic fracturing operation near Fox Creek, Alta., has been shut down after an earthquake hit the area Tuesday. The magnitude 4.8 quake was reported at 11:27 a.m., says Alberta Energy Regulator, which ordered the shutdown of the Repsol Oil & Gas site 35 kilometres north of Fox Creek. Carrie Rosa, spokeswoman for the regulator, says "the company has ceased operations … and they will not be allowed to resume operations until we have approved their plans." Rosa added the company is working with the energy regulator to ensure all environmental and safety rules are followed.
