Popular Enforcement Of International Law From Vietnam To Gaza

In a decision issued January 31, the United States District Court for the Northern District of California found that there is a credible case that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza and that the US is supporting its actions.[1] It called on the Biden administration to “examine the results of their unflagging support of the military siege against the Palestinians in Gaza.” While it said it had no authority to order the US to stop, it called on ordinary individuals to “confront the current siege in Gaza.” This Commentary is offered as a starting point for thinking about the implications of this decision for all of us.

Indian Port Workers Refuse To Handle Military Cargo Bound For Israel

The Water Transport Workers Federation of India, which represents 3,500 workers in 11 major ports across the country, has declared its refusal to load or unload any “weaponized cargoes” intended for use in Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza. This includes any cargo coming from Israel “or any other country which could handle military equipment and its allied cargo for war in Palestine”. “The recent attack of Israel on Gaza plunging thousands of Palestinians into immense suffering and loss. Women and children have been blown to pieces in the war. Parents were unable to recognize their children killed in bombings which were exploding everywhere,” the union said in a statement dated February 14.

What Really Happened When Two Captives Were Retrieved?

The Israeli occupation forces claimed on Monday that during a joint operation with Shin Bet and the Israeli Police, they were able to retrieve two Israeli captives held in Rafah by the Palestinian Resistance in Gaza, while simultaneously massacring over 100 Palestinian civilians and injuring tens of others. Following the retrieval of the captives, Israeli media and journalists narrated a web of tales praising the heroic but complex success of the operation, while Israeli generals and officials celebrated the accomplishment. However, as leads to the narrative did not add up, two major questions were raised.

US Threatens To Veto New Ceasefire Resolution At UN Security Council

US is threatening to veto a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza at the UN Security Council as the US continues to provide political cover for the Israeli massacre of Palestinians. US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said in a statement that if the resolution, which is being drafted by Algeria, was brought to a vote, it would not be adopted. Thomas-Greenfield justified US opposition to a ceasefire by pointing to US efforts to push for a new hostage deal between Israel and Hamas. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vetoed hostage talks last week, and Qatar, the mediator of the negotiations, said Saturday that things were not looking “promising.”

Israeli Peace Activist Calls For Sanctions, No-Fly Zone On Israel

Israel’s latest refusal to accept the Palestinian offer for a cease-fire and prisoner exchange demonstrates again that it only wants to continue the killing. Furthermore, the latest cold-blooded assault on Palestinians in Rafah – most of whom are displaced, having had to escape their homes in other parts of the Gaza Strip, presents an urgent need for the international community to intervene. The purpose of the intervention is to force Israel to comply with terms that will make it impossible for it to continue the killing. An absolute guarantee for the safety and security of Palestinians must be put in place and monitored by the international community.

‘Operation Al-Aqsa Flood’ Day 133: Israel Cuts Electricity To Hospital

A dire situation at the Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis is unfolding as Israel continues its raid on the largest functioning medical facility remaining in the Gaza Strip.  “We are forced to transfer all the patients and the wounded to the hospital’s old building,” Dr. Nahed Abu Taima, the Director of the Nasser Medical Complex told Al Jazeera.  “Electric power was cut off from the entire medical complex,” he continued, describing how the raid is impacting the 450 patients at the hospital, many of whom are in critical condition. “Many patients in ICUs and those on oxygen supply, and also those on dialysis are left fighting for their lives.”

Imperiled Gazans Do Have Somewhere to Go

Many professing solidarity with Palestinians — including alleged legal experts — being slaughtered in Gaza have said they have “nowhere to go.”  It’s not true.  They do. Somewhere they actually should go.  Their homes in what is now Israel. The majority of families of Palestinians in Gaza were forced there by Israel in 1948. See this great thread by Hanine Hassan:  “Who told you that the 1.5 million displaced Palestinians sheltering in Rafah have nowhere left to go? My family, now in Rafah, has a home in Jaffa, from which we were expelled by a fascist German family. The majority of our people in Gaza have homes to go to, all over Palestine.”

Constituents Mount Pressure Against US Senator Chuck Schumer

On February 15, Pro-Palestine activists staged a day-long picket outside of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s office in midtown Manhattan. Schumer is one of the chief supporters of Israel in the US government, which itself is the single largest funder of the Zionist state. Schumer has been spearheading the effort in the Senate to pass massive military aid to Israel, and was recently behind a successful effort to pass a USD 95 billion foreign aid bill for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. This bill included USD 14 billion for the state of Israel. The bill is now set to be voted on by the House of Representatives.

Report Back From Shut Down Travis Action: No US Weapons for Genocide

A growing coalition of peace & justice organizations from Northern California are collaborating to nonviolently impede the U.S. role in Israel's ongoing genocide in Gaza.  The newly formed campaign, called "Shut Down Travis," is organizing regular actions to peacefully impede "business as usual” at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, CA, where U.S. weapons are transported to Israel. It began on December 28, when activists, working together, successfully closed down all 4 gates for 1-4 hours ea. at Travis AFB.  NO US WEAPONS for GENOCIDE!  14 activists were ultimately arrested at two gates, and later cited and released in the afternoon, with citations to appear in Fairfield court for a February 23 arraignment.

The Threat Of All Out War: Yemen At A Tipping Point As US Airstrikes Intensify

In the courtyard of Yemen’s famous Al Shaeb Mosque, guards of honor stood at attention accompanied by the melody of military music as the funeral ceremony of Yemeni marines killed in the latest round of U.S. and UK strikes commenced. The mourners, many of whom traveled from the countryside to attend, walked alongside a long convoy carrying the bodies of 17 victims as it made its way through the streets of Sana’a. Mourners held aloft photos of the deceased or thrust their rifles into the air while chanting slogans condemning the United States. Several banners peppered the crowd, emblazoned with the label given to those who gave their lives in what many view as a struggle in defense of Palestine: “Martyrs on the road to al-Quds (Jerusalem).”

Rafah On The Precipice

Anywhere you go in Rafah, it is severely overcrowded. Misery and exhaustion are the most common refrains here in the southernmost city of the Gaza Strip. This is mixed with bitterness at their chronic lack of basic necessities and the world’s silence. When passing through the crowds, overhearing people’s conversations is easy. Their fears and concerns all reflect the same dread at Israel’s impending invasion of Rafah. “Where will we go?” This question is the most common, flying in the face of previous hopes that there would be an expected ceasefire following Hamas’s positive response to the Paris ceasefire proposal. Those hopes were dashed when Benjamin Netanyahu resolved to continue the war “to the end,” and it appears the world is content to allow Israel to continue with its genocidal war.

UNRWA Will Face ‘Negative Cashflow’ If US-Led Blockade Continues

The severe funding crisis facing the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), thanks to US-led cuts, is expected to worsen significantly in the coming months.  UNRWA Chief Philippe Lazzarini asked the countries that recently suspended financial support for UNRWA to "urgently rescind that decision"  during a news conference in Ireland on 15 February. "Our operation will start to be compromised as from March, but April will be really the month where we will be under deep, deep, deep negative cashflow," Lazzarini said, emphasizing that the agency is facing an “existential threat.” His comments come after Ireland pledged €20 million to the UN agency and urged others who cut their funding to resume support for UNRWA.

‘Operation Al-Aqsa Flood’ Day 131: Israeli Snipers Force Dozens To Evacuate Hospital

As ceasefire negotiations enter their second day in Cairo, fighting around Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis is intensifying—with dozens of Palestinians who have been sheltering inside forced to evacuate. Medicins Sans Frontiers (MSF) has said that there are about 400 patients in the hospital in critical condition. “The situation is really critical for patients and we are worried about the future,” said Guillemette Thomas of Medicins Sans Frontiers. Right now, the main thing holding up truce negotiations is disagreements over the number of Palestinian prisoners who should be released as a part of the deal. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is urging Hamas to “quickly complete” a truce deal to avoid carnage while displaced Palestinians in Rafah are bracing themselves for Israel’s ground invasion—which, at this point, feels inevitable.

ICC Chief Prosecutor Says Probe Underway Into Israeli War Crimes

The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khan, on 12 February warned Israeli officials about the consequences of launching a ground invasion of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip and revealed his office launched an investigation into possible war crimes committed by Tel Aviv. “I am deeply concerned by the reported bombardment and potential ground incursion by Israeli forces in Rafah. My office has an ongoing and active investigation into the situation in the State of Palestine. This is being taken forward as a matter of the utmost urgency, with a view to bringing to justice those responsible for Rome Statute crimes,” Khan said via social media.

Nicaragua Formally Applies To Join ICJ Genocide Case Against ‘Israel’

The government of Nicaragua has filed a formal application with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to join South Africa in its genocide case against “Israel.” The ICJ announced in a press release on Thursday, February 8, that Nicaragua referred to Article 62 of the Statute of the Court to file in the Registry of the Court an application for permission to “intervene as a party in the case concerning Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip (South Africa v. Israel).” In its filing, Nicaragua stated that it considers the conduct of Israel is in “violation of its obligations under the Genocide Convention” as it carries on its genocidal attack against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
