Activists Protest ‘Dirty Pipeline Deal’ Outside Schumer’s Office

Climate campaigners were arrested on Thursday after demonstrating outside Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer's Manhattan office, where they expressed opposition to the fossil fuel-friendly permitting reforms the New York Democrat agreed to bring to the floor to secure Sen. Joe Manchin's support for the Inflation Reduction Act. "Sen. Schumer is sacrificing frontline communities and our clean energy future, all to placate a coal baron," Food & Water Watch senior New York organizer Laura Shindell, one of 10 activists taken into custody, said in a statement. In addition to those who were arrested while conducting a peaceful sit-in at Schumer's office, dozens of others participated in Thursday's action, holding signs telling the majority leader to "Stop the Dirty Pipeline Deal" and "Off Fossil Fuels."

Hill Staffers Arrested After Sit-In For Climate Action At Schumer’s Office

Democratic leadership may have given up on passing major climate legislation, but their employees aren’t ready to throw in the towel. Six Congressional staffers were arrested Monday after a first-of-its-kind sit-in at Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer’s office demanding he give climate negotiations another try. “Right now, we Hill staffers are peacefully protesting Dem leaders INSIDE,” Saul Levin, a policy adviser to congresswoman Cori Bush who was one of those arrested, wrote, as The Guardian reported. “To my knowledge, this has never been done.” The protest comes at a crucial moment for climate action in the U.S. In late June, the Supreme Court ruled that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) could not restrict greenhouse gas emissions from power plants under the Clean Air Act without a new legislative mandate.

Protests Urge Sen. Schumer to Oppose Bernard McNamee As FERC Commissioner

Leaders representing hundreds of community, social justice, environmental and climate organizations have written an open letter to Democratic Party US Senate leader Chuck Schumer urging him to take two immediate actions: “Take steps to ensure that President Trump’s latest nominee to become a FERC commissioner, Bernard McNamee, is not approved by the Senate without a full debate on the floor of the Senate;” and, “Do not appoint Joe Manchin to be the ranking member for the Democrats on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee.”

Sen. Chuck Schumer: Wrong for Senate Democratic leadership

By CREDO Action - Starting a war with Iran is apparently the top legislative priority for the next leader of the Senate Democratic caucus. New York Senator Chuck Schumer just publicly declared that he will vote to kill the historic Iran nuclear peace deal and urge other Democrats in the Senate to do the same.1 There's no excuse for any Democrat to oppose the deal – least of all Senator Schumer, who is in line to take over leadership of the Senate Democrats once Senator Harry Reid retires. Chuck Schumer was wrong on Iraq when he voted for war and he is wrong on Iran. Schumer's decision to join Republicans in attempting to sabotage the Iran nuclear deal once again shows that he is unfit to lead Senate Democrats. Schumer is already facing a massive backlash for his dangerous attempt to take us to war with Iran. Even the White House is piling on, with Press Secretary Josh Earnest saying “I wouldn’t be surprised” if Senate Democrats consider Schumer’s decision in picking their next leader
