Green New Deal

“It’s Eco-Socialism Or Death”

The Green New Deal (GND) is now part of the national conversation. But for decades, social movements have been doing the on-the-ground work to resist fossil capitalism and envision a different future. Such grassroots social mobilization — but at a massive scale — is vital to ensuring the GND catalyzes transformative social change. Cooperation Jackson is at the forefront of eco-socialist organizing to create a new society and economy from the bottom up. Cooperation Jackson encompasses a network of worker cooperatives and supporting institutions fighting to build a solidarity economy in Mississippi and beyond.

The Movement And The 2020 Elections

The political system in the United States is a plutocracy, one that works for the benefit of the wealthy, not the people. Although we face growing crises on multiple fronts - economic insecurity, a violent and racist state, environmental devastation, never-ending wars and more - neither of the Wall Street-funded political parties are taking action to provide relief. Instead, they are helping the rich to get richer. The wealth divide has gotten so severe that three people have more wealth than the bottom 50% of people in the country. Without the support of the rich, it is nearly impossible to compete in elections.

How Militarization Impedes The Green New Deal

Fighting for a Green New Deal in the United States will require uniting all popular forces against the main barriers to social and ecological progress. The Sunrise Movement, which has brought the Green New Deal to the forefront of conversations about the environment, has identified fossil fuel interests as a main barrier to a green economy. Leaders like Aru Shiney-Ajay have rightly noted that solving climate issues will require “transforming our agriculture, transport, and energy systems,” and “massively investing in communities hit first and worst.” In order to overcome the stranglehold of fossil fuel interests over the political system, we need to understand how the military weapons and fossil fuel industries are intertwined.

Green New Deal & Housing: 10 Million Homes In Ten Years

When Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez ran in her primary against incumbent Democrat Joe Crowley, she had the Green New Deal on her website. But her big talking points were housing costs, gentrification, and Crowley’s links to real estate. Now she’s linked the two in this week’s Green New Deal resolution. So far so good. But the resolution only makes a passing mention of a housing guarantee. Its main economic focus is jobs. The crushing cost of housing is just as central — if not more so — to class struggle and workers’ economic pain than stagnating wages.

A Positive Vision For What The Green New Deal Could Be

We interviewed Dahr Jamail about his new book, "The End of Ice," for our podcast, Clearing the FOG, this week. It will be available Monday. Jamail describes the grim reality of human-caused climate distortion. The bottom line is: It is here. It is accelerating. We need to take swift action to attempt to mitigate it and adapt as best we can. The Green New Deal was introduced this week by Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Markey. It is best described by Jason Grumet, head of a conservative Washington, DC think tank, as "a mirror that allows anyone to see their own interest."

Sunrise Movement Kicks Off Green New Deal Week Of Action

With more than 400 watch parties nationwide and over 2000 people RVSP'd as of this writing, Sunrise said the webinar livestream "is shaping up to be the biggest coordinated event" in the movement's history. Go to the Sunrise website to RSVP for the event, which is scheduled to begin at 8pm ET. The event will feature youth climate leaders as well as author and activist Naomi Klein. "As Trump gets ready to spread his message of fear, division, and denial," Sunrise declared, "we'll be laying out our plans for how to bring the Green New Deal to every corner of this country and elevate the crisis that our president and his fossil fuel billionaire friends want us to ignore."

The Green New Deal Must Put Utilities Under Public Control

Highland Park, Mich., is a small, majority-black community of three square miles, nestled in the center of Detroit, with some of the highest poverty and unemployment rates in the country. It’s suffered a series of indignities and setbacks over the years: a state emergency management takeover of the city and surrounding areas; a state takeover of the public water infrastructure; public school closures; and a collapse of tax revenue fueled by white flight, fossil-fuel-driven suburban development, and the rapid decline of the housing market and auto industries.

Democrats Killed The Green New Deal

Environmental activists received a reality check when newly empowered Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives pushed aside demands for an environmental economic transition program— a Green New Deal, in favor of reviving a toothless committee to ‘study’ the problem. A transition program is needed to mitigate the economic dislocations that will result from resolving the multiple environmental crises currently underway. The move by Democrats virtually guarantees that the political support needed to move such a transition forward will be undermined by the day-to-day needs of the economically precarious majority.

Could A Green New Deal Save Civilization?

To fully and systematically address the climate/energy crisis, the plan will have to be far broader in scope than what is currently being proposed. And while we need to mobilize society as a whole with a World War II-level of effort, the reality is that there’s never been a challenge like this before. The idea is infectious. Could a big government jobs and spending program succeed in kicking into gear the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy, and ultimately save us from catastrophic climate change? The energy transition is currently going way too slowly; it needs money and policy support.

The Green New Deal And The Shift To A New Economy

We have three great guests to talk about it today. Coming up first is Johanna Bozuwa—a colleague of mine here at the Democracy Collaborative—a research associate who works on energy democracy as well as green jobs. We also have Anthony Torres, a campaign strategist at the Sierra Club’s Living Economy Program. Anthony is originally from Long Island, New York and has been featured as one of Grist.org’s Top 50 fixers and a Brower Youth Award winner. Finally, we have Evan Weber, political director and co-founder of the Sunrise Movement from Kailua, Hawaii. He has also been featured as one of Grist.org’s Top 50 Fixers.

Excluding Nuclear, Fossils With Carbon Capture, & Biofuels From The Green New Deal Makes Financial & Climate Sense

The Green New Deal and multiple proposed laws and resolutions in the U.S. House and Senate call for the United States to move entirely from fossil fuels to clean, renewable electricity and/or all energy. A new bill was just introduced by Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) and Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-CA), calling for the U.S. to produce 100 percent of its electric power from renewables by 2035. Recently, though, some vocal advocates have pushed back, claiming that the only way prices will stay low with large amounts of renewables on the power grid is to use nuclear power, fossil fuels with carbon capture, and biofuels, which they claim are “zero carbon.” Here is why nuclear, fossils with CCS, and biofuels should be excluded.

Youth Climate Leaders Occupy Schumer’s Office To Demand Support For Green New Deal

"Real climate leadership means a commitment to bold climate action and a just transition. It means a Green New Deal." Keeping up the pressure on the Democratic leadership to embrace bold and popular solutions that are aligned with the science, youth climate leaders on Thursday occupied the D.C. office of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y) to demand that he either show true leadership by supporting a Green New Deal or "step aside." "Real climate leadership means a commitment to bold climate action and a just transition.

A Call For The Food Movement To Get Behind The Green New Deal

“The Green New Deal we are proposing will be similar in scale to the mobilization efforts seen in World War II or the Marshall Plan… Half measures will not work… The time for slow and incremental efforts has long past [sic].”- Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, then-candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives, Huffington Post, June 26, 2018. “Just transitioning 10 percent of agricultural production to best-practice regenerative systems will sequester enough CO2 to reverse climate change and restore the global climate. Regenerative Agriculture can change agriculture from being a major contributor to climate change to becoming a major solution.” - Andre Leu, international director, Regeneration International, “Reversing Climate Change with Regenerative Agriculture,” October 9, 2018...

Three NY Farmers & An Educator Arrested For Tractor Blockade To Halt Massive Fracked Gas Power Plant

Four New Yorkers were arrested early Wednesday morning for using a tractor to block a cargo shipment on Route 55 in New Milford, CT destined for the Cricket Valley Energy Center construction site, a massive 1100-megawatt gas-fired power plant under construction in Wingdale, New York. Opponents of the plant say if construction is completed and the power plant is allowed to begin operating, it will become one of the largest sources of air pollution in the Northeast.

The Green New Deal New York Needs, From Its Original Source

In outlining his agenda for the first 100 days of his third term, Governor Cuomo said in December he would launch a Green New Deal. I have been calling for a Green New Deal since 2010 in three Green Party gubernatorial campaigns against him. Cuomo has already nominally adopted a number of my platform planks, including the fracking ban, marriage equality, a $15 minimum wage, tuition-free public college, paid family leave, and legalization of marijuana. Unfortunately, the implementation of some of these measures fall short of full realization and the same appears to be true for what will be Cuomo’s Green New Deal.
