In Venezuela, The Right To Housing Is Made Possible By The Revolution

Camp Amatina is located in an industrial zone, but other camps were also set up “in upper class, middle class and peri-urban areas, adapting to urban contexts with different characteristics” – explains Housing Vice-Minister Nelson Rodríguez. In Amatina there are about 140 families that meet in weekly assemblies. Iraida Morocoima, one of their spokespersons, welcomes visitors to share this experience: “many people among these families had no idea how to hit a brick. There were certainly others who were bricklayers, but most of us were women.

Something Trump-Bashed Baltimore Would Like To Ditch: ‘Kushnerville’ Homes

After a series of vicious attacks on their home by their own president, proud Baltimoreans are standing by their city. But there is something local they would likely be happy to ditch: decrepit “Kushnerville” housing provided by Donald Trump’s own son-in-law, who has been blasted by tenants in the press as a “slumlord.” Trump has lashed Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) in yet another attack on an African-American because of the congressman’s criticism of inhumane treatment of immigrants at the southern border, and slammed Cummings’ Baltimore district as a “disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess.”

Victory For DC Tenants In Catholic Church-Owned Buildings

Tenants across 3 separate buildings worked together to find a developer willing to purchase the buildings and ensure that the housing remains affordable. This seemed a near impossible task due to the price that the Basilica demanded, the lack of support from the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) for small building projects, the extensive lending requirements by banks, and the short Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Act (TOPA) timeline. Yet, due to hard work, perseverance and relentless organizing...

Migrants And ‘Black Vests’ Occupy Historical Monument

About a thousand migrants and asylum seekers entered Paris's Pantheon Friday and briefly occupied the vaunted memorial complex to demand talks with the prime minister on legalizing their undocumented status, activists said. The undocumented migrants, members of the 'Black Vest' collective, taking their name from the anti-government 'Yellow Vests' protesting throughout France since last November, entered the historic complex at around midday, a member of the Chapelle Debout collective said.

The United Tent Cities Of America

I viscerally remember a particular protest I participated in with Portland Tenants United that involved using tents as a symbol of the impending homelessness that will result if the landlords keep on raising the rent the way they’ve been doing. It’s a common, useful symbol, that communicates well in a picture, a tent. But there was that one protest when a bunch of actually homeless teenagers asked us, “what are you going to do with those tents when you’re done?” If one of the tents had been mine, I probably would have just given it to the kids who asked about it.

How The Coup In Venezuela And The US Housing Crisis Are Inextricably Connected

The United States economy is organized such that all commodities, including both weapons and housing, drive the lion’s share of profits upward, into the pockets of a wealthy elite class, at the expense of the masses of working people who generate those profits through their labor power. The functioning of this system in the interest of a tiny few at the expense of the many is made equally apparent by the orchestration of war against Venezuela by the U.S. ruling class and the orchestration of a massive housing crisis within U.S. borders by wealthy developers.

Northgate Apartments Celebrate 30 Years Of Resident Ownership, Affordability

Burlington, Vt - Vermont's largest affordable housing community marked a special milestone Saturday with a neighborhood-wide celebration. The Northgate Apartments in Burlington's New North End is celebrating 30 years of housing affordability and resident ownership. "We're celebrating 30 years of ownership, resident ownership," said Linda Romeo, a longtime resident. Romeo has lived at Northgate for the past 48 years. She raised her family there and can remember a time when conditions were poor.

UN Recognizes Venezuela Among Top Nations For Right To Housing

The United Nations has recognized Venezuela as one of the top countries for guaranteeing people’s right to housing at the first UN-Habitat Assembly taking place in Kenya’s capital of Nairobi. Venezuela’s Minister for Habitat and Housing Ildemaro Villarroel announced the statement Tuesday via his Twitter account. UN-Habitat is the U.N.'s highest decision-making body on the subject of sustainable urban development and housing. During the first day's sessions of the assembly, which runs from May 27 until May 31, the Venezuelan government made a presentation on the scope of its social program since it was first conceived.

In An Unequal America, Empathy, Not Just Housing, Has Become Too Pricey

In our daily lives, as anyone who keeps a household budget can attest, the unexpected happens all the time. A refrigerator evaporator fan motor fails. Some part on your car you never realized existed breaks down. A loved one passes away and you have to — you want to — be at the funeral a thousand miles away. “Unexpected” expenses like these will, sooner or later, hit all of us. But all of us, says new research out of the Federal Reserve, can’t afford them.

How A Community In North London Is Fighting For The Housing It Needs

At a crowded open meeting, local people moved from one table to the next, giving their opinions on a housing development planned for the site currently occupied by St Ann’s Hospital in south Tottenham. Brimming with ideas, attendees voiced their opinions on issues surrounding affordability, community control and environment, before eventually writing their thoughts on to posters on the back wall. The meeting was the latest development in a five-year campaign to secure community-run and affordable housing on the unused site, which had looked set to sell to private developers.

Why HUD Wants To Restrict Assistance For Immigrants

The Trump administration is targeting immigrants with a new policy—this time, by seeking to restrict housing assistance for families with mixed-citizenship status. On Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) proposed a new rule that seeks to vet all members of families applying for subsidized or public housing, even those who have declared themselves ineligible in the application. According to the administration, this rule, if promulgated, would help cut down the years-long waitlist for public assistance.

Born Out Of Occupy: Project 222

To think that Project 222 was born with a bang. Real bang. Human dignity over spineless puppeteering. Winston was living in a tent at the time. It was the Fall of 2011, an eventful time around Pennsylvania Avenue. Thousands had massed and camped outside the White House gates. The Occupy Wall Street movement had spread like wildfire. DC would have to put an end to the cancerigenous economic injustices of America. The whole stratum had to be shaken off and rebuilt. Built anew. Winston had to do something meaningful. That was it, Project222.org: Every human being in America and the world had the right to live with a minimum of dignity: 2 gallons of clean water, 2000 calories a day, 200 ft3 of secure shelter.

The Radical Way Berlin Plans To Solve Its Housing Crisis

Berlin ― A sea of placards streamed across Berlin’s Alexanderplatz, a large public square under the shadow of the city’s massive TV tower, with bold messages daubed in paint and printed across placards. “The City Belongs to Us!” “My Home, Not Your Profit!” “I Don’t Want to Move!” Thousands of people took to the streets in Germany’s capital city on Saturday to protest the rapidly rising cost of apartments in Berlin. “There were old people, young people, families, there were even homeowners … it was basically a snapshot of the entire population of Berlin,” said 77-year-old Barbara von Boroviczény, one of the activists involved in organizing the protest as part of grassroots campaign group Expropriate Deutsche Wohnen & Co.

A Referendum To Expropriate Apartments From Big Landlords In Berlin

Sarah-lena knust, a mild-mannered young pr consultant, is an unlikely radical. But finding a place to live in Germany’s booming capital tests the hardiest soul. Since moving to Berlin last year Ms Knust has twice struggled to find affordable housing. The last flat-viewing she attended attracted 30 rivals. The place she eventually found will suck up nearly half her income. “I knew it would be hard,” she sighs. “But I didn’t think it would be like this.” Such tales are familiar in a city where the days of paying next to nothing for cavernous apartments are long gone.

The Healthiest Communities In The U.S. Are The Ones Where People Can Afford Homes

North St. Louis County, Missouri, faces numerous challenges: The unemployment rate is three times higher than in the rest of the U.S., and life expectancy is 15 years lower than in Clayton, a more affluent community just three miles away. Over 90% of schoolchildren qualify for free school lunches, and all get their education from a system that lost its state accreditation six years ago. On top of that, North St. Louis County presents an organizational quandary: It comprises 24 distinct municipalities–some, like Glen Echo Park, as small as 150 people–each with their own separate government.
