Human Rights

The Time is Now for Universal Jurisdiction

The time is right to revive the concept of “universal jurisdiction” — the idea that a person, whatever their nationality, can be called to account before the court of any civilized country for grave international crimes In hindsight, it is almost too extraordinary: the leader of a Western-friendly government responsible for the deaths of thousands, and the torture of tens of thousands, arrested and brought to account for his crimes before a court and a judge.  But this is exactly what happened in 1998, when Judge Baltasar Garzon, a Spanish magistrate, issued an arrest warrant for the former dictator of Chile, Augusto Pinochet, while Pinochet was in the United Kingdom seeking medical treatment. What happened next was a series of hearings that became known as  The Pinochet Case, and which ended with a stunning victory for human rights

Urgent Action To Protect Human Rights Defenders In Colombia

Human-rights and social-justice organizations in Colombia as well as the international community demand all charges be dropped and the state immediately release Afro-Colombian activists imprisoned on frivolous "terrorism" charges. The ability to move swiftly to defend these two activists, Sara Quiñonez and Tulia Maris Valencia, will impact the Pan-African struggle worldwide.

Protesters Fight Back Against Deportation Of Human Rights Advocate

New York, NY - Over 30 people gathered for an emergency rally held for Jerome Succor Aba, a Filipino peace activist who was denied entry to the U.S. and sent back to Manila after being tortured at the San Francisco airport. Aba was scheduled to speak on the “Stop the Killings” speaking tour to expose the Duterte government and its U.S. backers. The rally took place in front of the Department of Homeland Security. The crowd chanted and gave speeches demanding “Justice for Jerome.” Michael Garrovillas spoke on behalf of Anakbayan New York. “As youth and students and beyond, exposing and opposing the fascist U.S.-Duterte regime, for a truly just and lasting peace in the Philippines, the militarized state here in the U.S. to the Philippines will continue to try any methods of fear and intimidation.

Palestinian Popular Resistance

The March of Return, which was launched on the anniversary of the Land Day, imposed new facts. The most important is that it revealed to the Palestinians the right of the return to self determination and to establish their independent state, refusing to bargain for their legitimate rights. Its true that the steadfastness (Sumud) of Palestinians sent a clear message to the American administration and Israel that the bells of return have begun ringing and will not stop until they reach the goal of Free state for Palestinians.

Syria: UN Expert Urges Pause-No Rush To Judgment

On 29 September 2011, the Human Rights Council adopted resolution18/6 on the promotion of a democratic and equitable international order. The resolution affirmed that a democratic and equitable international order fosters the full realization of all human rights for all, and that everyone is entitled to it. The resolution sees democracy as a universal value based on the freely expressed will of people to determine their own political, economic, social and cultural systems and their full participation in all aspects of their lives and reaffirmed the need for universal adherence to and implementation of the rule of law at both the national and international levels. In this connection, the principle of the will of the people, as expressed in periodic and genuine elections, shall be the basis of government authority.

50 Years Later, The Poor People’s Campaign Continues

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Poor People's Campaign, called for by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Although Dr. King was murdered a month prior to the Poor People's Campaign, it happened anyway. Resurrection City was built on the Mall in Washington, DC and people stayed there for six weeks. Fifty years later, widespread poverty exists and the "evils" of racism, capitalism and militarism are still in crisis. Two major campaigns are organizing poor people across the country.

Honoring Palestinian Artist Murdered By Israeli Forces

Muhammad Abu Amr, 19 years old, is a young Palestinian artist who was killed by the Israeli forces during the Great Return March last Friday in Gaza. He dreamed of sand sculpting an 800 square meter Map of Palestine on the beach in Gaza. His friend Osama Sbeata, a Palestinian artist, with couple of other friends, created the Map of Palestine in honor of his legacy, they made hid dream come true. During a peaceful Great March of Return last Friday, Muhammad protested with thousands of Palestinians near the Gaza border , the theme of their protest has been the Right of Return for Palestinian refugees.

Palestinians Will Not Cease To Demand Their Rights

The West has long been enamored with the specter of passive resistance with tens of thousands of unarmed demonstrators facing off against a heavily armed and ruthless force in pursuit of justice. Today hundreds of thousands of peaceful unarmed demonstrators marched towards the rim of the sealed off Gaza Strip. They got no closer than several hundred yards from Israeli snipers before shots rang out leaving hundreds of Palestinians injured and at least ten dead. This is not a movie. It is Gaza. It is Palestine.

Tasaheel Burnat, A Palestinian Activist On Palestinian Land Day

The events of the 1976 Palestinian Land Day came after the confiscation of thousands of acres of Arab land within the boundaries of populated areas under the cover of a Galilee Development Project.  The main goal was the Judaization of Galilee and the triangle areas particularly (the villages of Arrabeh, Deir Hanna, and Skhnin), as well as the Negev desert.  This led the Palestinians to declare a comprehensive strike.  Large Israeli army forces were ready inside the Palestinian villages attacking and injuring many Palestinians.

American Muslims Organize Grassroots Lobby For Palestine

This is the fourth year, American Muslims for Palestine (AMP) is holding its Palestine Advocacy Day and Training program in Washington, D.C.  This meeting started with a small number of attendees and supporters, however over the past four years the number of participants has increased significantly.  The goal of the conference is to prepare the next generation of leaders, activists, and advocates for Palestine providing them the basic tools for civic engagement with elected officials in different branches of government.

The ‘Human Rights’ War On Syria

The perfidious role of ‘human rights’ organizations in the war on Syria has been exposed again with the Amnesty International report on Syria for 2017/18, followed by an equally tendentious article in the Melbourne ‘Age’ newspaper by Claire Mallinson, Amnesty’s national director for Australia. In the name of human rights these organizations have actually worsened the crisis in Syria. They have never dealt honestly with its primary cause, the determination of the US and its allies seven years ago to destroy the government in Damascus, as part of a bigger plan to destroy the Iran-Syria-Hezbollah strategic axis across the Middle East. Democracy, human rights and the best interests of the Syrian people were never on the agenda of these governments. They were cold-blooded and remorseless in what they wanted and the means by which they sought to get it.

Brazilian Rights Activist Marielle Franco Assassinated In Rio

Part of a generation of young Black Brazilians who are becoming increasingly vocal inside and outside statehouses, Franco was elected to office in 2016. A resident of the Favela da Maré, an impoverished community in Rio, she was one of the main defenders of human rights in the country.  Franco was shot dead in a car on Joaquim Palhares Street, in the Central Region of Rio, at about 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Globo.com reports. The driver of the vehicle, Anderson Pedro Gomes, was also fatally shot, and a passenger, Marielle's adviser, was struck by shrapnel.  Investigators at the Homicide Office told Globo.com that the main line of investigation is execution. The day before she was murdered, Marielle complained about the violence in the city in a post on her personal Twitter. In the post, she questioned the action of the Military Police.

Former President Of Association Resigns Over BDS

I write with great regret to tell you that I have decided to resign from the MLA. My decision was long and hard in the making. No other past president has taken such a step, to the best of my knowledge, and I am not at all sure it is a step that will bear fruit. Please let me explain why I am leaving. By passing Resolution 2017-1, which closed the door in a constitutionally unprecedented way on future debate about the Palestinian call for boycott of Israeli academic institutions, the Association has sent a message to the world that it wants protests about the conditions of teaching and learning in Palestinian universities off the table.

Marathon Reaches Deal With Investors On Human Rights

In the face of mounting pressure from investors and the glare of public scrutiny, Marathon Petroleum Corp. officials acknowledged that the company has a responsibility to address environmental and social risks—including potential violations of the rights of indigenous people. However, in an agreement signed Friday with a block of shareholders, the oil company also said that the ultimate responsibility for protecting human rights lies with government regulators. Human rights activists described the concessions as superficial and said the lack of binding requirements could allow the company to continue with little reform. Shareholders in the Ohio-based company turned up the heat after seeing the treatment of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and others protesting the Dakota Access pipeline, a project Marathon bought into just as tensions were boiling over in 2016.

2017 Human Rights Status Report: Advancing Human Rights

The United States has a complicated and paradoxical relationship to human rights law.  2018 marks 70 years since the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly as a common standard of achievements for all peoples and all nations. The US played a leadership role in the drafting the UDHR which set out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected. While the US played a leadership role in the drafting of the UDHR, it has ratified several of them with reservations that limit the enforceability of the conventions through domestic law and in some cases, failed to ratify them at all.
