Rep.Terri Sewell, who has wallowed at the bottom of the barrel of the Congressional Black Caucus ever since she won election to her Alabama Black Belt seat in 2010, is stooping to new lows. Sewell this month introduced a bill crafted to nullify Sen. Bernie Sanders’ and Rep. Bobby Scott’s legislation to boost the national minimum wage from $7.25 to $15 an hour by 2024. The Sanders/Scott Raise the Wage Act would also ensure that the federal minimum wage will rise further as median pay increases.

Activists in Massachusetts were disappointed when the state’s Supreme Court struck down a ballot initiative last year to increase taxes on millionaires. But they’re already gearing up for round two. Their second try for the Fair Share Amendment – also known as the millionaire’s tax – began with a legislative hearing Thursday. Two hundred people, led by the Raise Up Massachusetts Coalition, packed the statehouse for a hearing on the Fair Share Amendment. The proposal, first brought about as a citizen’s amendment that would have appeared on the 2018 ballot, would impose an additional 4 percent tax on incomes over 1 million. The resulting revenue would fund public education and transportation infrastructure.

WASHINGTON — On Wednesday, the House Energy & Commerce Committee passed the Save the Internet Act of 2019 (H.R. 1644) out of committee with a 30-22 vote. The legislation, which would restore the FCC’s strong Net Neutrality rules and Title II legal framework for broadband, is expected to move to the House floor, where it could receive a vote as early as next week. Introduced in early March, the legislation had already drawn the support of 187 sponsors in the House by the time of today’s markup. It would reinstate the Federal Communications Commission’s 2015 Open Internet Order.

The Green New Deal often gets portrayed as simply a program for climate protection. But the Green New Deal — as proposed in a new congressional resolution from Representative Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Ed Markey — stands just as boldly as a strategy to counter America’s grotesque and growing inequality. The resolution they’ve introduced calls for “a new national, social, industrial, and economic mobilization on a scale not seen since World War II and the New Deal era.” Such a mobilization, notes their resolution, provides “a historic opportunity to create millions of good, high-wage jobs, virtually eliminate poverty in the United States, provide unprecedented levels of prosperity and economic security for all U.S. persons, and counteract systemic injustices.”

Continuing a week of civic unrest and political turmoil in Sacramento, high school and college students walked off their campuses by the hundreds Thursday to join a boisterous and at times angry four-hour march to the state Capitol to demand reforms on police use of force. The protesters, organized by campus chapters of the Black Student Union, marched in support of Assembly Bill 392, which seeks to change police use of deadly force law. The group also voiced anger at Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert’s decision not to charge two Sacramento officers in the killing of Stephon Clark.
