Regime Change

The Context Of Trump’s ‘Vile Aggression’ Against Venezuela

By Staff for Telesur. On Monday, the U.S. launched its latest diplomatic attack on Venezuela by officially putting Vice President Tareck El Aissami on a sanctions list reserved for “drug kingpins” without offering any evidence or issuing any criminal charges. Venezuela was quick to respond, with the Venezuelan Foreign Minister Delcy Rodriguez calling the move “lamentable and highly dangerous,” adding that her government “will not tolerate any aggression on our soil against our ability to be free.” For his part, El Aissami — who has vigorously and categorically denied the accusation — said the “miserable and vile aggression” was simply “an acknowledgment of (his) status as an anti-imperialist revolutionary.” As Venezuela contemplates its official response to the move, it’s important to review the background to this latest sanction.

Trump, Like Obama And Bush, Pursues ‘Regime Change’ In Venezuela

By Joe Emersberger for Tele Sur - Based on allegations of drug trafficking, the U.S. government has added Venezuelan Vice President Tareck El Aissami to its list of “sanctioned” Venezuelan officials. Unsurprisingly, Westerns journalists uncritically spread the allegations. Borrowing from Einstein, a definition of corporate journalism could be “the practice of uncritically citing the same dishonest sources over and over again no matter how catastrophic the result.” The targeting of El Aissami is part of the United States’ "regime change" policy toward Venezuela that goes back nearly two decades. It began shortly after the late President Hugo Chavez was first elected in 1998. As always, the international media’s collaboration with U.S. government objectives is crucial.

US Regime Change Not Over In Latin America Under Trump-Tillerson

By Staff of Latin America Goes Global - The written exchange below is long, but a few comments stand out. The first is Tillerson’s ambiguity over the Colombia peace deal saying that if confirmed he will “review the details of Colombia’s recent peace agreement, and determine the extent to which the United States should continue to support it.” Another is Cuba, where at first he does not call for a complete roll back of the Obama-era changes, saying in a more deal-oriented, open approach, “I will press Cuba to meet its pledge to become more democratic and consider placing conditions on trade or travel policies to motivate the release of political prisoners.” And also states later that he will “determine how best to pressure Cuba to respect human rights and promote democratic changes.”

Solidarity Politics To Resist The Coming Regime

By Deborah S. Rogers for Common Dreams - Many have issued clarion calls for resistance against the neofascist headed for the White House, his odious henchmen in tow. Few, however, have outlined all the steps needed to block Trump’s repugnant agenda and build a united movement that can upend the power dynamic in this country. Here’s my list: two popular suggestions, and four that take us well outside our comfort zone. First, we need to have each other’s backs.

Venezuela Right In New Coup Plot

By James Tweedie for Morning Star - VENEZUELA’S socialist government exposed at the weekend the right-wing opposition’s plans for a coup, set to begin on Wednesday. United Socialist Party (PSUV) parliamentary group vice-president Diosdado Cabello presented evidence of the conspiracy — dubbed “Plan Rock ’n’ Roll” — to reporters on Saturday. That followed a press conference by the opposition Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD) coalition on Friday night where leaders made veiled threats against the government.

USAID or US CIA?

By Thomas C Mountain for Telesur. The US Agency for International Development (USAID) was created by Pax Americana to provide a cover for CIA agents under the pretext of helping the 3rd World. US Imperialism has to do some good or its potential targets would not open their doors to intelligence agents posing as do gooders, so USAID was created. Today the USAID is headed by Gayle Smith, formerly the “Special Advisor” to President Barack Obama and Senior Director of the National Security Council. To put it simply, Gayle Smith is one of the top “spooks” in the USA, someone who told the CIA what to do. Today this former “spook” is running a multibillion dollar “aid agency” with thousands of employees or “contractors” operating world wide. Who knows who is an agent and who is a real aid worker when it comes to USAID.

Call For A National Debate On U.S. “Regime Change” Policy

By Staff of Center for Citizen Initiatives - “More than 50 State Department diplomats have signed an internal memo sharply critical of the Obama administration’s policy in Syria, urging the United States to carry out military strikes against the government of President Bashar al-Assad to stop its persistent violations of a cease-fire in the country’s five-year-old civil war. The memo, a draft of which was provided to The New York Times by a State Department official, says American policy has been “overwhelmed” by the unrelenting violence in Syria.

U.S. Sets Stage For Libya-Like Regime Change In Eritrea, “Africa’s Cuba”

By Glen Ford for Black Agenda Report - The U.S. is moving towards war against Eritrea, a fiercely independent African nation of only six million people. Washington has deployed its UN “human rights” proxies to justify another “humanitarian” military intervention, remarkably like the UN-sanctioned aggression against Libya, in 2011. The UN panel charges Eritrea with “enslaving” and murdering its own people – a pack of imperial lies. Obama is set to add another war to his bloody legacy.

Newsletter: Memorial Day Lesson – End War

By Margaret Flowers and Kevin Zeese for Popular Resistance. Memorial Day has become a holiday that celebrates war and treats soldiers as heroes, rather than respecting its roots as a day to mourn the personal costs of war. Instead of being a time of reflection on the truth about wars, the US Empire's war culture is on full display over the Memorial Day weekend perpetuating the myths that being in the military is both patriotic and heroic, when in truth many US wars are unnecessary and violate international law. It is up to us to examine the hypocrisy of US foreign policy and work toward ending war as a tool of foreign policy. Instead of repeating the mantra that war is good or patriotic, let's have an honest discussion about the reasons behind wars and the damage that wars wreak in numerous ways. It is time for all of us to build a people's movement for a world without war.

NSA Pushed Latin America Toward ‘US Objectives’

By Telesur. National Security Agency documents revealed by whistleblower Edward Snowden on Monday show that the NSA offered tailored training to staff on national security issues in Latin America in an effort to steer the region toward U.S. interests. A June 2003 edition of the SIDtoday newsletter, an internal publication run by the Signals Intelligence Directorate, the electronic eavesdropping division that The Intercept describes as “arguably the NSA’s most important,” announced a training opportunity for NSA staffers on Latin American strategic intelligence issues. The course, titled “Latin American Futures Project” and offered through the Strategic Intelligence National Intelligence Officer Council and National Cryptologic School, promised to “analyze potential developments in the Andean region and Brazil over the next five years along with their implications for U.S. interests in the region.”

Gwangju Democracy Protest, And Massacre; US Was Complicit

By Kevin Zeese for Popular Resistance. One area that has only recently been clarified is the role of the United States and supporting the military attack on the people of Gwangju. We now know the US did play a significant role. The rebellion was ended on May 27, 1980, by a Corean Army division dispatched from the DMZ marking the border with North Corea. They were sent with the approval of the US commander of the US-Corea Joint Command, Gen. John Wickham. Tim Shorrock reports that: That decision, made at the highest levels of the US government, forever stained the relationship between the United States and the South. For the people of Kwangju, many of whom believed that the US military would side with the forces of democracy, it was a deep betrayal that they’ve never forgotten. And once the rest of Korea knew the truth about the rebellion and understood that the United States had helped throttle it, anti-American sentiment spread like wildfire

Modern US Regime Change Operations In Latin America

By Staff of Tele Sur - The preconditions for "regime change" take, in some cases, years of careful preparation. Most progressive governments in Latin America find themselves under intense attack in what is evidently a well synchronized and well financed continental plan of destabilization. Riots, street demonstrations, anti-corruption campaigns, protests about the domestic negative impact of the world economic crisis, general strikes, impeachment efforts, economic sabotage, and the like, have become the battle horses on which oligarchic forces in cahoots with Washington are riding to carry out "regime change."

US Planned Regime Change Of ‘Too Left’ Syrian Gov’t

By Stephen Gowans for What's Left - Documents prepared by US Congress researchers as early as 2005 revealed that the US government was actively weighing regime change in Syria long before the Arab Spring uprisings of 2011, challenging the view that US support for the Syrian rebels is based on allegiance to a “democratic uprising” and showing that it is simply an extension of a long-standing policy of seeking to topple the government in Damascus. Indeed, the researchers made clear that the US government’s motivation to overthrow the government of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad is unrelated to democracy promotion in the Middle East.

Reality Peeks Through In Ukraine

By Robert Parry for Consortium News - Nearly two years since U.S. officials helped foment a coup in Ukraine – partly justified by corruption allegations – the country continues to wallow in graft and cronyism as the living standards for average Ukrainians plummet, according to economic data and polls of public attitudes. Even the neocon-oriented Wall Street Journal took note of the worsening corruption in a Jan. 1, 2016 article observing that “most Ukrainians say the revolution’s promise to replace rule by thieves with the rule of law has fallen short and the government acknowledges that there is still much to be done.”

SOA Watch Spring Days Of Action Begin Tomorrow

The movement to close the SOA has been tremendously successful in educating broad sectors about the reality of U.S. foreign policy towards Latin America. While SOA Watch started out with a narrow focus of ending the training of repressive Latin American military forces and the closure of the School of the Americas, the scope of our work has broadened over the years. The SOA is part of a broader system of militarism. The institute is not an aberration of U.S. foreign policy but a clear example of it. At the Peoples Movement Assembly (PMA) this Spring, we will place the SOA into the broader political frame. We will explore the intersectionality of social justice movements in the US, and the relationship between militarized US policy, mass incarceration, deportations, the "War on Drugs," etc. Art and culture will be an integral part of the PMA.
