Nuclear Weapon Ban Treaty Nearly Two-Thirds Of Way To Entry Into Force

At the United Nations last month, the prime minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, alerted world leaders to a growing risk of nuclear war in Kashmir. “We are heading for a potential disaster of proportions that no one here realises,” he said. Tensions in the disputed region escalated this February to the point that conflict between India and Pakistan seemed distinctly possible. Other nuclear-armed nations also have descended to new lows this year, making casual threats to unleash the destructive force of their nuclear arsenals against each other and even against nations without nuclear weapons.

Colombia Admits To Deceiving U.N. With Fake Pictures To Accuse Venezuela Of Illegal Activities

News agencies AFP and El Colombiano have confirmed that they had taken at least four of the pictures included in the dossier delivered by Colombian President Ivan Duque to the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres last Thursday during the 74th U.N. Assembly General. According to the President, the photographs were to be key evidence to prove the relationship between Colombian illegal groups and the Venezuelan Government headed by Nicolas Maduro, reported the news website Semana.

Korean Peace Group Letter To UN Secretary-General: “UN Command Stop Using the UN Flag ”

More than 40 Korean as well as international peace organizations have sent an open interrogatory to UN Secretary-General indicating that the use of the UN flag by the so-called “United Nations Command” based in South Korea and Japan is not appropriate. The so-called “UN Command” based in Korea since the Korean War which started in 1950 is a ‘camouflage’ organization made by the United States by distorting the resolutions of the UN Security Council.  In addition, the right to authorize the use of the UN flag by the UN Security Council is also in violation of the UN Flag Code.

Venezuelan And Bolivian Heads Of State Address United Nations On Climate Crisis, Capitalism And Imperialism

In this house of the international community, common mechanisms of cooperation are also being stimulated in order to address the urgent need to preserve the environment, impacted by the devastating capitalist model. We express our solidarity with the brotherly Caribbean people of the Bahamas, a recent victim of the ravages of climate change. And as an Amazon country, we raise our voice to reject the barbaric commodification of our Amazon, led by Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. He has used his extremist ideology to attack nature’s lungs. We proclaim the rights of nature as an everlasting banner of the peoples. We also came to this Organization to effectively address the urgent need to fight against poverty and inequality, where 26 people possess the same wealth as the 3.8 billion poorest people in the world.

No Deadlines Must Be Imposed On Syrian Constitutional Committee

The recently established Syrian Constitutional Committee must not face any imposed deadlines or timetables that may affect its activities, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem said. “No deadlines or timetables must be imposed on the committee. Each step taken must be prudent and informed since the constitution is an essential step in the determination of Syria’s future”, the minister said, addressing the UN General Assembly. According to Muallem, the committee must not face any imposed preconditions.

The United States’ Declining Power Was On Display At United Nations Session

As the United Nations wraps up its General Assembly session, we speak with Bahman Azad, a professor who heads the United States Peace Council, about the unprecedented steps the Trump administration took to restrict visiting diplomats and heads of state from attending or from speaking outside the UN during their stay. We discuss the current state of the world, the harmful impacts of US imperialism, and powerful global institutions such as the UN, the Non-Aligned Movement, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. As the world shifts to one where there are many dominating countries, how will that impact US foreign policy and our chances of creating a more peaceful, just and livable future? We also discuss 'Ukrainegate' in-depth and other current events.

US Does Not Let Iranian Foreign Minister Visit Iranian Ambassador In NYC Hospital

United Nations - The United States rejected a request by Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif to visit Iran’s United Nations ambassador in a New York hospital where he is being treated for cancer, the U.S. State Department and Iranian U.N. mission said on Friday. A U.S. State Department spokesperson said Zarif’s request would be granted if Iran released one of several American citizens it had detained. In July the United States imposed tight travel restrictions on Zarif before a visit that month to the United Nations, as well as on Iranian diplomats and their families living in New York, which Zarif described as “basically inhuman.” Unless they receive prior approval from Washington, they are only allowed to travel within a small area of Manhattan, Queens and to and from John F. Kennedy airport.

Hundreds Of Groups Oppose Corporate-Governance Agreement Between UN & World Economic Forum

The UN Secretary General and the World Economic Forum signed on June 13 a Strategic Partnership Agreement for the implementation of the 2030 agenda (SDG). More than 240 organisations signed the following letter demanding the end of the agreement and denouncing it for formalising the corporate capture of the UN and moving towards an increasingly privatized and less democratic global governance. We the undersigned call on you to terminate the recently signed United Nations-World Economic Forum strategic partnership agreement. We are very concerned that this WEF-UN partnership agreement will de-legitimize the United Nations and provide transnational corporations preferential and deferential access to the UN System. The UN system is already under a big threat from the US Government and those who question a democratic multilateral world.

Trump Regime Denies Visas To Members Of Russian And Iranian UN Delegations

International protocol obliges host country USA to issue visas for delegation members, attending sessions at UN headquarters in New York. The US operates by its own rules exclusively, repeatedly breaching international laws, norms and standards. Iranian President Rouhani addressed the General Assembly on Wednesday, arriving in New York on Monday. Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif preceded him in the city last Friday, saying US visas for him and Rouhani were delayed, only issued grudgingly, adding that the Trump regime “made it very clear in a letter that they attached to my visa that I’m not eligible to get a visa, but they’re doing it on a waiver basis. So they want me to know that I’m not supposed to be here”—the same true for Rouhani. Many of his aides and Iranian journalists were denied visa permission to attend the General Assembly session.

Geneva Passes Resolution In Favor Of Venezuela’s Human Rights

Jorge Valero acknowledged the UN Human Rights Council for addressing the negative connotations of Washington´s policy against Maduro´s government and the impact of these sanctions on people´s life. During an ordinary session celebrated in Geneva, this Tuesday, UN Human Rights Council passed a project of the resolution called “strengthening cooperation and technical assistance in the field of human rights in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela”, informed its permanent representative Jorge Valero.

Youth Strike In Front Of United Nations For Climate Action

New York ― Hundreds of young people took a break from their summer vacations to strike for climate action on Friday, joining well-known climate activist Greta Thunberg outside of the United Nations headquarters in Manhattan. The rally precedes a youth-led global climate strike to take place on Sept. 20, days before the U.N. Climate Action Summit. Protesters ― many of them teenagers ― held signs that said, “In Greta We Trust,” and, “If You Won’t Act Like Adults We Will.” They chanted phrases like, “Sea levels are rising, and so are we,” in between speeches by young climate activists. Thunberg, a 16-year-old from Sweden, had arrived in the U.S. earlier in the week by way of a solar-powered boat. Many of the teens at the rally were members of Fridays for Future, a global movement founded by Thunberg, in which students strike on Fridays for climate action.

Global Appeal For Peace; People Of The World Unite

This is a new initiative to create a worldwide network of people and organizations that will work together to oppose the lawless actions of the United States: interference in the politics of other countries through open and covert regime change, the imposition of unilateral coercive economic measures (aka sanctions) that are contributing to the deaths of tens of thousands of people, and threats of aggression or outright military attacks. All of the above violate the founding charter of the United Nations, yet neither the United Nations nor its International Court of Justice have been effective in holding the United States accountable for its actions. No one country or one movement has the power alone to hold the United States accountable, but together we can make a difference.

People’s Mobilization To Stop The US War Machine

The US War Machine must be stopped, and only we can stop it. That's why we are organizing the People's Mobilization to Stop the US War Machine, a series of actions in New York City from September 20 to 23 while the United Nations General Assembly meets. At a time when all of the world leaders gather, we will say we've had enough of the US War Machine. We demand the US be held accountable for its destructive acts. It's time for the US government to obey the United Nations Charter by stopping regime change operations, ending the use of unilateral coercive measures (aka sanctions) and ceasing military attacks. We demand the US sign the nuclear weapons ban treaty, rejoin the Iran nuclear agreement, disband NATO and close bases and outposts around the world. We demand an immediate transition to a peace economy that uses our resources to meet human needs and protect the planet.

Environmental Damage Is A War Crime, Scientists Say

Two dozen prominent scientists from around the world have asked the UN to make environmental damage in conflict zones a war crime. The scientists published their open letter in the journal Nature. The letter, titled "Stop Military Conflicts from Trashing the Environment," asks the United Nations' International Law Commission to adopt a Fifth Geneva Convention when it meets later this month. The UN group is scheduled to hold a meeting with the aim of building on the 28 principles it has already drafted to protect the environment and lands sacred to indigenous people, according to The Guardian.

Venezuela’s Foreign Minister On The ‘Failed’ Coup And Building A New Non-Aligned Movement

Just hours after returning from meetings at the United Nations in New York, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza sat down for a one-on-one interview with The Grayzone’s Anya Parampil. The two discussed Arreaza’s effort to reaffirm international support for the concept of state sovereignty amid the Trump administration’s campaign to overthrow the democratically elected government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.  While in the United States, Arreaza announced the formation of what he described as “an important group” of UN members states...
