US Sanctions In Venezuela: Help, Hindrance, Or Violation Of Human Rights?

The impact of the US sanctions on the Venezuelan population cannot be overstated. More than 300 000 Venezuelans are at risk due to a lack of lifesaving medications and treatment. An estimated 80 000 HIV-positive patients have had no antiretroviral therapy since 2017. Access to medication such as insulin has been curtailed because US banks refuse to handle Venezuelan payments for this. Thousands to millions of people have been without access to dialysis, cancer treatment, or therapy for hypertension and diabetes. Particular to children has been the delay of vaccination campaigns or lack of access to antirejection medications after solid organ transplants in Argentina. Children with leukaemia awaiting bone marrow transplants abroad are now dying. Funds for such health-assistance programmes come from the PDVSA state oil company. Those funds are now frozen.

A Call For People’s Awareness Of Venezuela

In 1999, we decided, as a nation and democratically, to be independent and sovereign, to move towards a model of social justice and equality, as well as to freely make use of our vast wealth. We agreed that such a transition would be made peacefully and democratically. This, our decision, became a threat for the United States administrations, loyal representatives and spokespeople of large capital. They declared war on us since that moment. That war intensified since 2013, when Hugo Chavez passed away. This is not unconventional warfare, they are not launching missiles, nor are they bombing military zones. This is even a more fateful war, causing affliction and damage to the whole population, to boys, girls, women, the elderly, men, civilians, and also to soldiers. It is a war that is leaving appalling injuries.

Mike Pompeo Disappointed By Anti-Chavism Division

What did Mike Pompeo say? This is all about remarks made at a closed-door meeting with Jewish leaders in New York last week, where the diplomat confirmed that Anti-Chavista politicians are divided and impulsive and that efforts made by the United States to keep them together have been harder than what they have publicly shown. “Our conundrum, which is to keep the opposition united, has proven devilishly difficult,” Pompeo said in the meeting, adding that “the moment Maduro leaves, everybody’s going to raise their hands and say ‘Take me, I’m the next president of Venezuela.’

Uniting To Protect Venezuela And Stop The US War Machine

The US-led coup attempt in Venezuela continues to falter as the US admits the opposition is selfish and divided. Juan Guaido was exposed as relying on Tarot Cards and an astrologer to determine Venezuela's future. Russia and China pledged unified support to Venezuela in opposition to the US-led coup. The US added new sanctions against Venezuela. The effort to protect international law by the Embassy Protection Collective continues in court and needs your help to defend against US government prosecutions. And, a coalition of organizations announces a weekend of actions during the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York City from September 20 to 23: The People's Mobilization to Stop the US War Machine (and Save the Planet). More details below.

Country-By-Country Review Of Latin America Through 2021

The fundamental factor affecting developments in Latin America and the Caribbean over the next five years, as elsewhere around the world, will be the progressive decline of US power and influence in the face of the new multipolar world led by China and Russia. Within the next two years, US power and influence is likely to be in such deep national economic and environmental crisis that its ruling corporate elites will have largely lost their still current ability to destroy readily the possibility of good outcomes for everyone else.

China Along With Russia Will Support Venezuela Against US Aggression

Chinese Vice Minister Zhang Hanhui says that Beijing and Moscow are interested in working together to support Venezuela in the face of foreign interventions. “China is willing, together with Russia, to strengthen multilateral interaction and coordination on the Venezuelan issue,” said Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Hanhui at a press conference on Thursday, answering the question of whether the issue of Venezuela will be raised during the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Russia at the beginning of next June.

Venezuela’s Bolivarian Revolution In The Crosshairs Of US Imperialism

With the likes of John Bolton and Elliot Abrams directing US foreign policy, the US government has abandoned all pretense of “plausible denial” for its illegal regime-change initiatives. The “humanitarian” bombs may not be falling but, make no mistake, the US is waging a full-bore war against the Bolivarian Revolution in Venezuela. Back in 1998, Venezuela had had nearly a half a century of two-party rule. A duopoly, not unlike the Republican and Democratic parties in the US, alternated in power imposing a neoliberal order.

Trump’s Venezuela Hallucination

Trump’s Venezuela policy is a shambles, and Russia previously brushed off his ultimatum to remove their forces from the country. It isn’t surprising that he would try to spin any development in his favor, but in this case it seems that he just invented something out of thin air so that his Venezuela policy wouldn’t look quite so feckless. He has no genuine successes that he can talk about, so he has to have pretend victories instead.

UN Recognizes Venezuela Among Top Nations For Right To Housing

The United Nations has recognized Venezuela as one of the top countries for guaranteeing people’s right to housing at the first UN-Habitat Assembly taking place in Kenya’s capital of Nairobi. Venezuela’s Minister for Habitat and Housing Ildemaro Villarroel announced the statement Tuesday via his Twitter account. UN-Habitat is the U.N.'s highest decision-making body on the subject of sustainable urban development and housing. During the first day's sessions of the assembly, which runs from May 27 until May 31, the Venezuelan government made a presentation on the scope of its social program since it was first conceived.

Internationalizing The Monroe Doctrine: From Venezuela To Golan Heights And Back Around

A remarkable diplomatic intervention has been published by United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who, along with the U.S. Ambassador to Israel, declares that “International Law Backs The Trump Golan Policy.” The opinion justifies President Donald Trump’s recent proclamation that the United States will recognize the Golan Heights, acquired from Syria by Israeli military force in 1967, as “part of the State of Israel.” The U.S. legal claims are incomprehensible in terms of any recognized methods and sources of international law.

US: Tape Exposes Pompeo’s Real Opinion On Venezuelan Opposition, ‘They Plot For Themselves’

The Venezuelan opposition is divided, a fact which has presented challenges to the U.S. government in their efforts to topple President Nicolas Maduro, admitted Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in a secret recording leaked Wednesday by the Washington Post. “Our conundrum, which is to keep the opposition united, has proven devilishly difficult,” Pompeo added during a closed-door meeting in New York last week. “The moment Maduro leaves, everybody’s going to raise their hands and [say], ‘Take me, I’m the next president of Venezuela.’ It would be forty-plus people who believe they’re the rightful heir to Maduro.”

Why We Need The New Yorker To Correct Its Error On Venezuelan Inequality

My hat is off to Keane Bhatt, NACLA blogger and occasional Extra!contributor, for his tireless efforts to prod one of the United States’ most prestigious media outlets to live up to its professed standards of accuracy. The outlet is the New Yorker, a magazine whose name is practically synonymous with factchecking. It’s a tradition there; they brag about how seriously they take checking the facts. Which makes you wonder how Keane was able to find the glaring, major errors in the New Yorker‘s recent coverage of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, all perpetrated by longtime contributor Jon Lee Anderson.

Two Venezuelan Embassy Protectors Speak Out

“We denounce these arrests, as the people inside were there with our permission, and we consider it a violation of the Vienna Conventions” — Venezuelan Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Ron. I was in Washington, D.C., most of the time between May 7 to May 19 to support the Venezuela solidarity activists of the “Embassy Protectors Collective.” They were staying inside the embassy at the invitation of the elected government, defending the sovereignty of the Venezuelan Embassy and the Venezuelan people.

How Venezuelans Turn To Collective Action To Defy US Blockade

A response in the form of collective action is part of how the Venezuelans resist to sanctions, with song, smiles, and confidence they seem to be undeterred to fight for the Bolivarian ideals, despite U.S. imperialism. As the United States government intensifies its unilateral coercive measures against Venezuela, its people have turned to one another to push ahead and deal with economic sanctions. Local Colectivos (Collectives) and demonstrations of popular support have come to represent the unbreakable will of the Bolivarian Republic.

Kremlin Says Russian Military Specialists Are Still In Venezuela, Contradicting Trump Tweet

The Kremlin said on Tuesday it didn't know where U.S. President Donald Trump had got the idea Moscow had removed most of its military specialists from Venezuela, who it said continued to work there. Trump tweeted on Monday that Russia had told the United States it had removed "most of their people" from Venezuela, where Moscow has maintained close military and economic ties with socialist President Nicolas Maduro. His statement caused a stir because, if true, it would mark a significant setback for Maduro, whom Washington is keen to dislodge and whom the Kremlin has steadfastly stood by.
