Fast Track Protest: “No TPP No Way, Not Ever Not Today”

Opponents of the TPP protested throughout yesterday's hearing as soon as members of the committee entered the room. Here is a video of their statement at the end of the hearing. Margaret Flowers of the FlushTheTPP campaign, one of the protestors who held signs saying "TPP: How Low Can Wages Go?" during the hearing, criticized the fast track bill for putting limits on floor debate, barring Congress from making amendments, and requiring "a straight up-and-down vote." It would also, she said, be a continuation of the secrecy surrounding negotiations of the Trans Pacific Partnership. The only text released to the public so far has been leaked. She doesn't think fast track passage through Congress would improve transparency in any way. "[Even] Congress has limited access to the text, while 600 corporate advisers have ready access," she said. "It will be pushed through without any review or transparency, and that's going to set the global template for trade." Hatch promised transparency during the legislative process. Objections to the TPP and TTIP rest largely on the powers they give corporations to override domestic laws in violation of state sovereignty.

Obama’s TPP Fast Track Gets Dealt Blow By Leaked Environment Chapter

The reason you're seeing this fall apart is really two things. First, there is a big social movement, a movement of movements bringing together labor, internet freedom, environmental protection, worker rights, you know, food safety. Everything gets affected by TPP. And so a lot of people are coming together. And for more than a year now, Congress [incompr.] getting letters and phone calls and emails and visits and protests about TPP. So they're hearing from their constituents. You know, it's a steady stream of opposition from this movement of movements, this social movement that's saying no to this global corporate coup, the Trans-Pacific Partnership. So that movement's very key. And that movement's gotten stronger and stronger. Every leak that comes out, it gets stronger. And Ron Kirk--you might remember Ron Kirk, you know, the former trade representative--before he retired in January, he negotiated three years of this. So he knows what's in it. He said that the reason we keep it secret is because if people know what was in it, it would be so unpopular it could never pass. Well, that's becoming true. Every leak that comes out makes it less and less and less popular, and people are getting more and more mobilized against it. That's one thing. The other thing is President Obama. He's already got the Republicans against him. And now he's--the chickens are coming home to roost with the Democratic Party.

Time to Rethink Emergency Response

Sofia Gallisa Muriente describes how the Occupy Wall Street movement established a horizontal, community-based network that served as an optimal model for citizen-centric emergency response in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

The TPP vs Democracy (Video)

Last week, legislation to fast track a vote on the Trans Pacific Partnership was introduced in Congress. President Obama, who, along with advisors from several hundred corporations, has built the TPP in secret, away from the prying eyes of Congress or the public, desperately wants this fast track authority. The grant of that authority is, according to prevailing wisdom and the pro-neoliberal agenda Forbes magazine contributor Dan Ikenson , something “widely considered necessary to complete and ratify the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement between the United States and 11 other Pacific-bordering nations, as well as other prospective trade agreements." Why is Fast track so important?

Disneyland Mobbed By Dancing Families Protest

Anaheim’s central venue for its tourism industry, the Disneyland Resort, was mobbed on Tuesday, amongst busy visitors just hours before their “fireworks spectacular.” Families and supporters of recent police killing victims armed themselves with masks and music as they hit the resort’s “downtown” district with a “flash-mob-style” action. Some of the masked “mobbers” carried rolled pieces of paper to hand out to guests, whom seemed supportive of the melodic rally. As some of these scrolled notes were unrolled, however, some happy faces quickly turned blank as they were struck with a bit of reality. One woman was quick to throw her note on the floor, only for a “justice warrior” to pick it up and continue handing them out. The notes listed names of the killed and said :Tonight we dance in honor of all lives lost at the hands of law enforcement. Together we fight to expose the truth that the media won’t share. And we demand that the police stop killing our people!! Who made them judge, jury and executioner?!? Join us before your loved one is killed by an officer!” The action came to an end with resort security “accompanying” the flash-mob participants out the Downtown Disney district.

Here’s Why IT Firms Are Concerned About NSA Leaks

Why did IT firms meet with Obama about the NSA? The National Security Agency scandal exposed by whistleblower Edward Snowden has cost American technology companies billions of dollars in lost revenue as governments and companies in its important export markets of Asia refuse to entrust the handling of sensitive data to US companies. An analysis of financial filings from technology giants IBM and Cisco by The Independent on Sunday reveals the two businesses have seen sales slump by more than $1.7bn (£1.03bn) year-on-year in the important Asia-Pacific region since Mr Snowden revealed in June that US companies had been compromised by the NSA's intelligence-gathering in the clandestine Prism program. "US companies have seen some of their business put at risk because of the NSA revelations," said James Kelleher of equity research firm Argus Research. China is high on the list of those countries now shunning US companies.

2013 Resistance Report Year In Review

What an amazing year for the movement of movements that continues to develop here in the United States and around the world, and what an amazing first season of The Resistance Report. In this week’s special expanded episode, we take a look back at some of the most amazing stories of the year. In addition to coverage of Edward Snowden, the Acronym TV 2013 Person of the Year, we also remember 2013 as a time when people took power and reversed what seemed like the inevitable march to war with Syria. In 2013, The Resistance Report served as an antidote to the hear-no-evil see no evil attitude of mainstream media outlets here in the United States about the ongoing crisis at the Fukushima nuclear facility in Japan. In the attempt mitigate future catastrophic damage; the global community is faced with challenges unique in the history of humankind. While The Resistance Report launched this year on July 29, 2013, and so our review of Resistance Reports is but a half year old, but there is still enough Manning, Snowden, Greenwald, Keystone X-L protests, Stop the TPP Protests, Dream Defenders, Fast Food Strikers, Hunger Strikers, and neo-liberal shenanigans to jam pack this 60 minute year in review.

Massive Protests In South Korea

A series of different protests as well as a mass strike organized by labor groups rocked South Korea on December 28, 2013. From noon till late at night, about 100,000 citizens and labor workers angrily demonstrated against the current government's election manipulation scandal and clampdowns on labor groups as well asmoves toward privatization of the nation's railway system, though the administration denies such claims. Some observers are calling the outbreak of demonstrations proof that public anger has nearly “reached its boiling point” [ko]. Although it failed to reach its goal of one million participants, more than 100,000 [ko] were reported to be present till late afternoon. Although police estimate the total number barely reached 20,000, some disputed the number by pointing out that 13,000 riot police were mobilized for the event.

Greenwald: US, British Media Are Servants Of Security Apparatus

Journalist Glenn Greenwald condemned the mainstream media during an address at a German computer conference on Friday and accused his colleagues of failing to challenge erroneous remarks routinely made by government officials around the globe. Thousands of attendees at the thirtieth annual Chaos Communication Congress in Hamburg packed into a room to watch the 46-year-old lawyer-turned-columnist present a keynote address delivered less than seven months after he started working with former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden. Revelations contained in leaked documents supplied by Snowden to Greenwald and other journalists have sparked international outrage and efforts to reform the far-reaching surveillance operations waged by the NSA and intelligence officials in allied nations. But speaking remotely from Brazil this week, Greenwald argued that the media establishment at large is guilty of failing significantly with respect to accomplishing its most crucial role: keeping governments in check.

Pussy Riot Speaks: Still Critical Of Putin’s Rule

Two articles and a video of the press conference held by two members of Pussy Riot after their release from prison. We applaud their plans to develop a human rights organization focused on Russia's prison system. No doubt after seeing prisons from the inside they will have a depth of understanding that will help people in Russia better understand how that system operates. Obviously, similar work is needed in the United States and we have covered the mass incarceration in US prisons as well as issues like solitary confinement on Popular Resistance in the past. We hope that Pussy Riot does not get used by the US Empire in their work. Getting in the middle of global politics could undermine their credibility and diminish their work. We view the US Empire as a grave danger to the world. The comment made by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. about the US role in the world as: “The greatest purveyor of violence in the world : My own Government, I can not be Silent,” remains true today.

6 Crimes Against Nature Perpetrated By the Food Industry

The horrors of factory farming are multifold. Treating animals like heads of lettuce—"forget it's an animal" says one farming magazine—has created institutionalized ruthlessness toward animals, workers and the environment at the same time it harms humans who eat the products. Factory farming even damages the economy thanks to meat-related obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer, and greedy, short-sighted land-use policies. While many procedures on factory farms are cruel, some practices like breeding animals into mutant-like parodies of their original species and violating mother/offspring bonds are truly crimes against nature. . . "There is, unfortunately, no way to breed eggs that only produce female hens," said spokesman United Egg Producers Mitch Head to the Associated Press after release of video showing the newborns being fed into the blades. "If someone has a need for 200 million male chicks, we're happy to provide them to anyone who wants them. But we can find no market, no need." Other egg-related industry tactics, while not as cruel, are just as shocking. In 2008, USDA caught Tyson injecting antibiotics directly into the eggs of future laying hens, despite its "no antibiotics" advertising claim. Tyson spokesman Gary Mickelson said the vaccinations with the human antibiotic gentamicin are "standard practice," though the drug is far from harmless and comes with a rare black box FDA warning for renal, auditory and vestibular toxicity. Eggs with embryos are also sprayed with ammonia, phenolics and peroxides.

Wall Street Bankers Urged To Donate Bonuses To The Homeless

What most of the country calls the holidays, Wall Street bankers know as bonus season. In just the first nine months of 2013, banks put away more than $90 billion to be doled out at the end of the year as bonuses, according to analysts at Johnson Associates, a compensation consulting firm. That's on top of whatever they siphon from the final three months, meaning bonuses are likely to total well over $100 billion this year. An online populist advocacy group, The Other 98%, is instead suggesting bankers donate their bonuses to charity or other housing-related endeavors in an effort to combat the housing crisis caused by the financial collapse. "This holiday season, we have some free PR advice for the banks: Help end the homelessness they created. It is quite literally the least they could to," said Alexis Goldstein, a former Wall Street analyst and Occupy Wall Street activist who serves as communications director for The Other 98%.

Dakota, Wokiksuye Riders Remember Mankato 1862 Execution

At 10:00 Thursday at the site of the largest mass execution in United States' history in downtown Mankato, riders who have traveled from Lower Brule, South Dakota, will gather to remember the 38 Dakota men hanged after the 1862 United States-Dakota War. KEYC-TV reports in Dakota 38 Participants Ride Horseback For Honor that this year's ride is to honor Dakota women: [Ride Staffkeeper Peter] Lengkeek says "Long ago, when we were exiled from hereby order of the government, there was mostly women and children left and they're the ones that survived that journey. Its because of the women is why we're here now."

Merry Crisis And A Happy New Fear

When Charles Dickens waxed poetic about death, greed and misery in his classic Christmas Carol, he very much had in mind the societal dislocation wrought by early industrial capitalism. Of course the Dickensian critique of capitalism lacked a thorough political economic analysis and ultimately failed to move beyond moral outrage at poverty and the decline of human virtue. But, that said, even Karl Marx opined that Dickens in his lifetime “issued to the world more political and social truths than have been uttered by all the professional politicians, publicists and moralists put together.” A Christmas Carol was published in 1843, just five years before The Communist Manifesto and the revolutionary wave of 1848. If we were to write A Christmas Carol for our time, would the story really look so different? The character of Scrooge still seems omnipresent — from wealthy Wall Street investors who haven’t paid a penny for the financial mess they created in the lead-up to the current crisis, to the power-hungry politicians who literally surround themselves with gold while announcing an Age of Austerity for everyone else.
