2020 Elections

Countering Rightward Drift In The United States: This Struggle Is Long Term

This week, people are planning protests across the nation beginning the day after the election. Some, like Democratic Party-aligned groups and unions, will only demonstrate if President Trump loses and refuses to leave office. Trump will fail if he tries because the ruling class has clearly shifted its support to Biden. Professor Adrienne Pine explains this in her analysis of the opposition to Trump. Others such as issues-based groups, coalitions and community groups are planning to take the streets no matter what the outcome of the election is. This is good news...

As The Far-Right Escalates Calls For Violence, Police And National Guard Deploy

In the face of massive early voter turnout and a flood of mail-in ballots, Trump, in a last ditch effort, is continuing to signal that he will refuse to accept the outcome of the election; falling back on the combined power of the supreme court, the repressive power of the police and National Guard against protesters, and violent far-Right groups on the streets engaging in voter suppression and intimidation. Trump and his supporters have also once again started to float the idea of invoking the Insurrection Act; which would allow Trump to unleash the military on American civilians along with a flood of

Deception 2020: The One Thing Democrats And Republicans Always Agree On

In this sixth installment of the Deception 2020 Series, we highlight the most vibrant common thread between both of our corporate parties: imperialism. We sit down with Leonardo Flores to discuss Venezuela in particular, placing the ongoing attack on this progressive nation in the broader context of US imperialism both away and at home.

Biden And Trump Agree Far More Than They Disagree

With the U.S. presidential elections slated for next Tuesday November 3rd, unprecedented numbers of voters have already cast their ballot. Despite a polarized electorate deeply divided on issues from police brutality to COVID-19, for many voters commited to preventing four more years of Trump, the two major candidates prove far more similar than presented in mainstream media. To shed light on some of these dyanmics in this crucial election for the hemisphere, we spoke with Adrienne Pine, professor of medical anthropology at American University, member of the Embassy Protection Collective, and author of the recent book, "Asylum for Sale: Profit and Protest in the Migration Industry."

Sanctions, Elections And Tactical Opportunities

First, the very existence of the Venezuelan nation-state is at stake in the upcoming elections. Of course, all countries on the periphery struggle for their existence in the unequal power relationship that exists between the Global North and the Global South. This is a global class struggle, where the aggressor is the imperialist pole, represented by NATO. They aim to recolonize our continent. As such, the struggle in the upcoming elections is not with the Venezuelan opposition, which merely reflects the White House’s interests.

Deception 2020: It’s Not The Most Important Election

In this fifth installment of the Deception 2020 Series, we dig into that trite line about “the most important election of our time!” You’ve likely heard it before – chances are you’ll hear it again. For some historic and political context, we sit down with Eugene Puryear to further highlight the fallacy of this claim, and discuss what really makes any year – regardless of elections – politically important.

Left-Democrats Abandon Struggle For The Working Class To The Right

All indications are that Joe Biden is heading for a landslide win. Losers will be Trump and those Republicans who have not already defected to the Democrat’s big tent. Collateral damage, however, may be the progressive cause. Some leftists have advocated temporarily subordinating an independent working-class alternative to campaign for the leading neoliberal candidate. For example, the Open Letter: Dump Trump, Then Battle Biden argues for “the most urgent task — defeating Trump in the election with as big an Electoral College margin as possible, to undermine his predictable efforts to steal the election.”

Deception 2020: It’s Not Propaganda When We Do It

In this fourth installment of the Deception 2020 Series, we dig into the cesspool of propaganda – the red, white and blue kind. Joined by Mickey Huff, Director of Project Censored, we turn the camera towards the corporate media and discuss some of the things you won’t hear in this election run up, and why media literacy is so vital now and especially moving forward.

Pandemic Transforms People Into Voting Rights Activists

For Regina Root, 53, the journey to suing Virginia’s election officials began during the state’s nomination contest in June when the university professor cast her ballot in person before the voting day to avoid potential crowds at her polling place. The brain surgery that saved Root’s life left her with impaired vision and her election office lacked a machine that would allow her to cast her vote without relying on her husband. “I thought wait, this doesn’t make sense. I can vote on my own. I have a PhD,” said the Williamsburg, Virginia, resident.

How Bolivia’s New Socialist Senator Resisted Coup Terror

Just a few days after the dramatic landslide victory on October 18 of the Movement Toward Socialism (MAS) party founded by Evo Morales, I traveled 3.5 hours from the Bolivian city of Cochabamba, with The Grazyone team of Ben Norton and Anya Parampil, to Chimoré, here in the tropical region of Cochabamba, that’s a base of support for the MAS party. We attended a gathering of regional party leadership, including the mayor of Chimoré; Senator-elect Leonardo Loza, who is filling the role of Evo Morales in the Senate; and Senator-elect Patricia Arce, who has become a symbol both of the terror and cruelty of the (Jeanine) Áñez coup regime and of the dramatic revitalization of her MAS party.

Why We Need To End Capitalism To Defeat Fascism

With the presidential election coming up, there is a lot of focus on how the election will go and who will win. One thing is certain, no matter which corporate candidate wins, the people and the planet will lose. To understand where we are and how we got here, I speak with Gabriel Rockhill, a philosopher, author and activist. He explains the connections between our governance structure and capitalism and how both liberal democracy and fascism in a sort of good cop/bad cop relationship  are used to protect the profits of the few while exploiting the many.

Week Of Action Starting November 4, 2020

The federal government is failing us. By now we’re all well aware of the tax cuts and record-breaking profits accumulated by the wealthy while the rest of this country struggles to survive the pandemic; their failure to address the fundamentally corrupt institution of policing responsible for destroying black and brown lives and communities; their indifference to the climate crisis. We know we’ve been given a choice between one presidential candidate who emboldens the US’ spiraling undercurrent of far-right hate and one who will do nothing to stop it.

Federal Judges Block Efforts To Ease Rules For Mail-In Ballots

In the final weeks of the 2020 election, Republican-appointed appellate judges have overturned rulings that required states to make mail-in voting easier during the COVID-19 pandemic. Tens of millions of ballots have already been cast, even as federal judges kept changing the rules.   These decisions could be reviewed by the U.S. Supreme Court, which will include a 6-3 conservative majority if nominee Amy Coney Barrett is confirmed by the U.S. Senate next week as planned. So far, the court has ruled against voters in nearly every case it has reviewed.

USPS Ordered To Reassemble Sorting Machines

A federal judge has ordered the United States Postal Service (USPS) to restore previously decommissioned high-speed mail sorting machines at offices that can’t process election mail fast enough ahead of the upcoming presidential election. The order is the result of a lawsuit filed by New York state in late August. In the order, U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan wrote that, if a post office or distribution center is unable to process election mail, “available processing equipment will be restored to service to ensure that USPS can comply with its prior policy of delivering Election Mail in accordance with First Class delivery standards.”

After Socialist Victory In Bolivia, Media Still Whitewash Coup

Bolivia’s Movement Towards Socialism (MAS) party won a decisive victory in the country’s presidential elections on Sunday, with its candidate Luis Arce apparently winning by a large enough margin to avoid a runoff, likely achieving an absolute majority. The leading opposing candidate, neoliberal Carlos Mesa, and the right-wing unelected President Jeanine Áñez congratulated Arce on his victory. Some in US corporate media, however, failed to describe what was really going on in the country. When the Wall Street Journal (10/19/20) reported on the MAS victory, for example, it kept to the usual line...
