Chaos In The Courthouse As Border Arrests Surge

It was just before 3 p.m. on a recent Tuesday and Magistrate Judge Barbara L. Major of the Southern District of California had been waiting all afternoon to arraign 37 people arrested for illegally entering the country. The arrests followed the Trump administration’s enactment of a new “zero-tolerance” policy, under which anyone caught crossing the border illegally—even first-time offenders—would be federally prosecuted for a misdemeanor and face a possible six months in prison. But the defendants never appeared in the San Diego courthouse that day.

Trump Wants Mexico To Become His Own Border Patrol

Donald Trump, head of a political party whose symbol is an elephant, accuses Mexico of taking advantage of the United States for decades, allowing an “invasion” of people and drugs, and he says there is nothing to talk about with his Mexican counterparts unless they fulfill his orders. This is nothing but the same storyline he used for his presidential campaign and which seems to work for his internal political electoral purposes. This has nothing to do with facts, data and reasons about one the most complex bilateral relations in the world.

The Real Border Emergency, Thought Crimes & The Truth About Abortion

A look at the worsening emergency in the borderlands – hint: the migrants aren't the ones creating the emergency. Next up, they say dissent is patriotic – but they clearly haven't met the 'Muricans pushing hardcore totalitarian legislation that criminalizes protest. And finally, we speak with a doctor from Physicians for Reproductive Health about the recent escalation in anti-reproductive rights legislation.

Armed Militia Detaining Asylum Seekers At Gunpoint Along US-Mexico Border

Armed right-wing militias have been systematically detaining asylum-seekers at gunpoint along the US-Mexico border in operations that are apparently coordinated with the federal Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) agency. The role of one particular group in detaining immigrants, the United Constitutional Patriots (UCP), came to light this week after the group uploaded several videos on social media, showing its members masked, dressed in camouflage, heavily armed and walking with dogs as they “patrolled” the border and corralled several hundred asylum seekers in Sunland Park, New Mexico, just outside El Paso, Texas.

Indigenous Activists Set Up Protest Camp At South Texas Cemetery To Stop Trump’s Wall

The 154-year-old Eli Jackson Cemetery sits about a mile from the Rio Grande, south of the Hidalgo County town of San Juan. Encompassing about a quarter-acre, it hosts the remains of some 150 South Texans. Just a few feet north rises a sloped earthen river levee, which the Trump administration soon plans to transform into a 30-foot concrete and steel border wall. South of the wall, the feds plan to clear a 150-foot “enforcement zone,” raising fears that bodies will be exhumed, and most of the cemetery razed.

‘We Are Running Concentration Camps’: Images From El Paso Stir Outrage Over Migrant Treatment

Hundreds of migrants are being held by border agents in a fenced in encampment under a bridge in El Paso, leading to anger and accusations that the American government is holding people in "concentration camps." Images posted online by reporters and advocates painted a disturbing scene in the Texas city. Lines of migrants behind fencing, being processed by agents from U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP), walked into a camp area that appeared to be standing room only.

Federal Agents Can Search Your Phone At The US Border — Here’s How To Protect Your Personal Information

When you're entering the United States, federal agents have broad authority to search citizens and visitors alike — but a new lawsuit filed Wednesday is trying to change that. The lawsuit, filed by the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the American Civil Liberties Union, seeks to prevent agents from flipping through your phone, computer, and any other electronic devices you have with you without getting a warrant first. As the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) outlines in a tearsheet it provides to people at the border, federal agents today can seize and search your phone, and even make a copy of it to have forensic experts analyze its contents off-site.

Stage Set Long Ago For Encounter At Colombia-Venezuela Border

On February 23, the U.S. and Colombian governments joined in trying to push humanitarian supplies from the Colombian border city Cúcuta into Venezuela. They were using humanitarian aid as a Trojan Horse to confront Venezuelan security forces. These were supposed to have stepped aside, Venezuela’s military forces would, in theory, have disintegrated, and a take-down of its socialist government would follow. But the soldiers, police, and people’s militia remained loyal to the emancipating legacy of President Hugo Chávez. They blocked the trucks and the façade shattered.

Federal Government Drops Charges Against Four No More Deaths Volunteers, One Still Faces Trial

TUCSON: On Thursday federal prosecutors dropped criminal charges against four humanitarian aid volunteers.  The charges came down as a result of the volunteers’ search for migrants missing in the desert. They have now been issued civil infractions carrying a fine of $250 each.  One remaining volunteer, Scott Warren, continues to await trial both on misdemeanor charges and felony charges for his humanitarian aid work in the Ajo corridor. In July 2017, No More Deaths’ Search and Rescue hotline received a call about three migrants in distress on the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge.

Venezuela: Communication Minister Shows Truth Of Border Violence

On Sunday, Venezuelan Minister of Communication and Information Jorge Rodriguez revealed the truth of the violence on the Simon Bolivar-Venezuela border bridge. His revelations show the falsification of reports by mainstream media related to Saturday’s violence. "We have to denounce to the world the immense and powerful operation of false flags attacking Venezuela," stated the Bolivarian politician. Rodriguez revealed videos made from the protests which evidently shows that the burning of the two vehicles, which the mainstream media blamed on members of the Bolivarian National Guard (GNB), which occurred on the Colombian side, but was in fact caused by Molotov cocktails thrown by opposition youths, or Guarimbas.

Progressives Should Support Open Borders — With No Apology

When President Donald Trump claimed in his State of the Union Address that “wealthy politicians and donors push for open borders, while living their lives behind walls and gates and guards,” it was his latest of countless efforts to accuse Democrats and liberals of being “soft” on migration. Like the entirety of Trump’s speech, this claim was misleading and outright false on many levels. The notion, for example, that “liberal elites” support open borders while a billionaire president defends the working class from the migrant “threat” is outrageous. Among the many problems with the argument is that it ignores — or rather, intentionally obscures — the fact that the U.S. working class itself is composed in significant part by millions of migrants.

President Maduro Shuts Venezuela’s Border With Brazil

Venezuela President Nicolas Maduro announced Thursday the closure of Venezuela's border with Brazil adding that his government was evaluating the total shutdown of the country's border with neighboring Colombia amid mounting threats of intervention against the country by the United States and its allies.  "Venezuela closes land border with Brazil on Thursday, February 21st from 8 pm until further notice," Maduro said during a meeting with the Superior General Staff of the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB).

Trump’s Wall & National Emergency Declaration Coming

Just leaked today that Senator McConnell, Trump’s echo, has indicated that Trump will declare a national emergency today, even as he signs a compromise bill with Pelosi and the Dems to fully fund his Wall. Mainstream media thinks this is big time news. Comes as a surprise. But I predicted it back on January 7, 2019 in a tweet @drjackrasmus.com. To quote myself in response to talk whether Trump will declare a national emergency to get his way on the Wall: “Can (and will) Trump declare national emergency to fund his wall? Yes and Yes. Dem Congress in 1976 law gave him wide powers. 100s laws since say which.

Journalists, Lawyers, And Activists Working On The Border Face Coordinated Harassment From U.S. And Mexican Authorities

FOUR PHOTOJOURNALISTS GATHERED on the southern side of the U.S.-Mexico border wall shortly after Christmas in Tijuana. They were there to document the arrival of the migrant caravans from Central America, the latest chapter in a story that had drawn President Donald Trump’s increasing outrage. As the photographers waited in the dark, a pair of Mexican police officers approached. The officers wanted to know the photographers’ names and where they were from. They asked to see their passports and photographed the travel documents once they were handed over.

Nogales City Council Calls On Feds To Remove All Border Razor Wire In The Arizona City

NOGALES, Ariz. — Officials in this Arizona border city passed a resolution Wednesday night condemning the installation of new razor wire that now covers the entirety of a tall border wall through downtown. The City Council in Nogales, which sits on the border with Nogales, Mexico, wants the federal government to remove all concertina wire installed within the city limits. Otherwise, Nogales Mayor Arturo Garino said the city will sue. City officials say Army troops installed more horizontal layers of the wire along the border wall last weekend.
