Climate Change

What Does It Take To Destroy A World Order?

Once upon a time in America, we could all argue about whether or not U.S. global power was declining. Now, most observers have little doubt that the end is just a matter of timing and circumstance. Ten years ago, I predicted that, by 2025, it would be all over for American power, a then-controversial comment that’s commonplace today. Under President Donald Trump, the once “indispensable nation” that won World War II and built a new world order has become dispensable indeed. The decline and fall of American global power is, of course, nothing special in the great sweep of history.

Climate Crisis Requires Fundamental Social And Economic Changes

To end our fossil fuel addiction we need a fundamental technological change — but this cannot happen without changing our social and economic systems. The bad news about climate change keeps coming: record heat levels in Australia in January, and in the UK in February; increasingly uncontrollable wild fires; shocking leaps in Arctic temperatures. The worst news of all is that the gulf between what scientists say needs to be done and what the international climate talks deliver keeps growing.

Over 30,000 Youth Urge U.S. Court To Allow Juliana V. United States To Go To Trial

San Francisco, California - Youth-led climate group, Zero Hour, will file the Young People’s amicus (“friend of the court”) brief tomorrow with the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in support of the 21 young Americans behind the landmark lawsuit, Juliana v. United States. Responding to the Trump administration’s latest attempt to get the case dismissed, the brief will urge the Court to allow the constitutional climate lawsuit to proceed to trial. In the amicus brief, Zero Hour represents the nearly 30,000 young people under the age of 25 from across the United States and abroad who added their names to support the youth climate lawsuit.

The Rigors Of Organizing: On The Road With The German Climate Resistance

Recently, press in the United States told the story of the great transition that the German Coal Commission announced. Benevolent governments like Germany are deciding to make a just transition away from coal and have even set an end date, 2038, for a long-term orderly transition to occur. The mainstream media is hailing this transition as a model for the rest of the world. There are two problems with this narrative. First, the current German plan renders it impossible for Germany to meet its goals under the Paris accords. Despite what the German governmental spin is, Germany’s proposed coal exit is well behind the 2030 exit of other European countries and includes a transition to fracked gas.

Youth Climate Activists Demanding Green New Deal Arrested For Sit-In At #OilMoneyMitch McConnell’s Office

"We're here to warn him and all senators: if you refuse to back the Green New Deal, young people will remember next time you ask for our votes." Hundreds of Kentucky high school students and climate campaigners with the youth-led Sunrise Movement descended on the Capitol Hill office of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Monday to deliver 100,000 petition signatures and stage a sit-in to make clear to lawmakers that young people want a Green New Deal for their communities and futures.

Researchers: Violence, War And Climate Change Are Linked

LONDON—Stand by for long hot summers marked by riot and racial tension. As climate change stokes mayhem, global warming is likely to see a direct rise in human irritability. Climate change accompanied by natural disaster such as flood or drought could lead to harvest failure and food and water shortages for which people must compete. And the same natural disasters could lead to a generation of babies, children and adolescents more likely, because of disadvantage and deprivation, to become more prone to violence in adulthood.

The Movement And The 2020 Elections

The political system in the United States is a plutocracy, one that works for the benefit of the wealthy, not the people. Although we face growing crises on multiple fronts - economic insecurity, a violent and racist state, environmental devastation, never-ending wars and more - neither of the Wall Street-funded political parties are taking action to provide relief. Instead, they are helping the rich to get richer. The wealth divide has gotten so severe that three people have more wealth than the bottom 50% of people in the country. Without the support of the rich, it is nearly impossible to compete in elections.

Capitalism’s Ownership Of Global Warming

Capitalism not only owns global warming, there’s a big red mitigation arrow pointed at the heart of today’s rampant capitalism, which is eerily similar to the loosie goosie version of the Roaring Twenties, but with a high tech twist. After all, somebody’s got to pony-up for climate change/global warming mitigation. Who better than deep pocket capitalists? For historical perspective: Today’s brand of capitalism runs circles around the Eisenhower 1950s with its 90% top marginal tax rate amidst harmony and good feelings all across the land, an age of innocence aka Leave It To Beaver.

Youth Movements Changing Tactics In The Face Of Climate Crisis

Back in 2015, a group of youth warriors bravely filed a lawsuit against the federal government for failing to protect their right to life and liberty by willfully ignoring the dangers of climate change. Last month, the 21 plaintiffs of Juliana v. United States gathered under the same roof for the first time in quite a while at the New York Society for Ethical Culture. The group convened with leaders of the most powerful movements of our time to share their experiences and discuss what need to be done to address our climate crisis.

Finding Hope In The Midst Of Climate Disruption

The climate crisis is no longer an abstract concept, it is here and it is getting worse. Each new report finds the temperatures are getting hotter, the ice is melting faster and the seas are rising, not to mention the storms, fires and droughts. In his new book, "The End of Ice," Dahr Jamail takes us on  tour to the places where the impacts of climate disruption are evident. And he takes us on a tour of his personal journey through grief to acceptance and even hope. Jamail shows us the reality of the climate crisis and offers advice for how to relate to it in a meaningful way.

A Positive Vision For What The Green New Deal Could Be

We interviewed Dahr Jamail about his new book, "The End of Ice," for our podcast, Clearing the FOG, this week. It will be available Monday. Jamail describes the grim reality of human-caused climate distortion. The bottom line is: It is here. It is accelerating. We need to take swift action to attempt to mitigate it and adapt as best we can. The Green New Deal was introduced this week by Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Markey. It is best described by Jason Grumet, head of a conservative Washington, DC think tank, as "a mirror that allows anyone to see their own interest."

On the Front Lines Of The Climate Change Movement: Mike Roselle Draws A Line

The arrest was nothing new for Mike Roselle, who cut his teeth in direct action environmental campaigns decades earlier as a co-founder of Earth First!, a top campaigner for Greenpeace US and later as the wit behind the tenacious Ruckus Society. Unlike most mainstream environmentalists, you are not likely to see Roselle sporting a suit and lobbying Washington insiders on the intricacies of mining laws—you are more apt to see this self-proclaimed lowbagger (one who lives light on the land, works to protect it and has few possessions to show for their hard work) engaged in direct, but nonviolent, confrontations with the forces of industrialization, using tactics honed during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s.

Paying Off Climate Change, A Nostalgic War & The Thing About Jews

Here's what happens when you fine big polluters – plus a look at how intertwined law enforcement and pipeline companies are (hint: it's not you they're protecting and serving.) Next up, should we stay or should we go? Why corporate media is getting so nostalgic for perpetual war in the Middle East. And finally, Senate Bill 1, anti-zionism, anti-semitism – clearing the fog with Nora Barrows-Friedman.

My Patients’ Health Depends On Addressing Climate Change

As a fourth-year medical student, I’ve learned plenty about caring for patients with common illnesses and injuries. But as a native of fire-ravaged Northern California, and a student in Pennsylvania — where I hear regularly about communities torn apart by the natural gas industry — I can’t help but worry about my ability to care for my patients in an age of climate change. Climate change isn’t just an environmental crisis, after all. It’s a looming health crisis. More hurricanes, floods, droughts, and wildfires means more disease, dehydration, famine, injury, and death.

Terrifying Assessment Of A Himalayan Melting

But that would happen only if global average temperatures can be capped at a 1.5oC increase above pre-industrial levels. Most scientists agree that target is unlikely to be met. If current emission trends continue, the world will actually be hotter by between 4.2-6.5oC by 2100 – in which case two-thirds of Himalayan glaciers will be gone. Himalayan peaks are warming between 0.3 to 0.7oC faster than the global average, and the loss of Himalayan ice would have devastating consequences for 1.6 billion people living in the mountains and downstream countries. Climate models show that summer flow in the Indus, Ganges, Brahmaputra and their snow-fed tributaries will actually rise till 2050 as the glaciers melt away...
