Green Goals, Dirty Fuel: Europe’s Fertiliser Industry Bets On Shale

The coastal city of Freeport, Texas is a dense tangle of metal pipes, tanks and towers. Located 60 miles south of Houston, it’s home to a sprawling petrochemical complex – one of the largest and most polluting in the United States.    Among its facilities is a plant dedicated to the production of ammonia, a colourless compound of nitrogen and hydrogen, and a key ingredient in fertilisers widely used on industrial arable farms – including on fields of barley, wheat and maize across Europe. Chemicals giants Yara and BASF opened the “world-scale” factory to great fanfare in 2018, promising “cost-efficient” and “sustainable” ammonia production.

Health Groups Shun Advertisers Working For Fossil Fuel Companies

More than 30 medical organisations representing 12 million health professionals worldwide have pledged to boycott advertising and public relations agencies that work with the fossil fuel industry, citing the impacts of the climate crisis on human health. “Health organisations have great power that they can bring to bear in their hiring of advertising, marketing, and design companies by choosing to work only with agencies that do not take money from fossil fuel companies,” said Jeni Miller, global executive director of the Climate and Health Alliance, a consortium of more than 200 organisations that developed the initiative.

In the fall of 2017, the American Petroleum Institute (API) sponsored a workshop for Pennsylvania Girl Scouts, featuring “activities that mimicked work in the energy industry.” Each scout left with a “coveted patch and a greater understanding of natural gas and oil,” API’s CEO Jack Gerard reported in an “Executive Update” email — one of the API member companies that co-funded the event. What America’s most powerful oil lobby likely did not tell the Girl Scouts, however, was that API had hosted the seminar as part of its mission to cultivate “nontraditional local allies,” described by Gerard as some of the “best and most influential voices with targeted policymakers on industry issues.”

Order To Expand Logging Threatens To Increase Climate-Fueled Wildfires

On March 1, President Donald Trump signed an executive order titled “Immediate Expansion of American Timber Production.” The order claimed “onerous Federal policies” have hindered domestic timber production and that expanding logging was a matter of protecting “national and economic security.” It ordered the secretary of the Interior and head of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), who oversee the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) respectively, to develop a plan to expand timber targets and streamline permitting “to suspend, revise, or rescind all existing regulations, orders, guidance documents, policies, settlements, consent orders, and other agency actions that impose an undue burden on timber production.”

Extinction Rebellion Sink Lamborghini At Fossil Fuel/Insurance Love-In

On Wednesday 14 May, environmental groups including Extinction Rebellion met delegates at Europe’s largest insurance brokers conference in Manchester Central with a colourful and dramatic protest. They were there to demand the industry stops backing fossil fuel projects. And what better way to call out flush fossil fuel financiers than to put a sinking Lamborghini at the event’s front door? A new report by Boycott Bloody Insurance shows that there are 33 British insurance companies active in large fossil fuel projects. Just five companies had invested $6.5bn. In April, campaigners in Manchester celebrated the decision by Chubb to rule out backing the controversial East African Crude Oil Pipeline.

Student Unions Overwhelmingly Vote For ‘Fossil Free Careers’

Students’ unions at two universities have voted overwhelmingly to boycott fossil fuel recruiters. Non-profit People & Planet coordinated the successful student-led Fossil Free Careers campaigns at University College London (UCL) and the University of Bath. Students there are demanding that their institutions end oil, gas, and mining industry recruitment on their campuses for good. As a result of student campaigning by the Bath People & Planet Society and the UCL Climate Action Society, UCL and Bath Students’ Unions are now mandated to actively campaign for their universities’ careers services to implement an ethical careers policy that excludes oil, gas, and mining companies from recruiting on campus.

Louisiana Gas Tax Break Could Cost Local Communities $2.8 Billion

When Australia’s Woodside Energy Group announced April 29 that it plans to move forward with its Louisiana LNG export terminal, the state hailed the move as the “largest single foreign direct investment and greenfield project in Louisiana history.” It could also create perhaps the largest single local tax giveaway in U.S. history, under a Louisiana law offering corporations property tax breaks worth billions of dollars, a new Sierra Club study shared with DeSmog finds — representing a massive subsidy from Louisiana communities for exporting fossil fuels from the U.S. to Europe and Asia.

Student Activists Pass Municipal Resolution To Make Polluters Pay

Northampton, MA. – Sunrise Movement activists at Smith College and local advocates passed a Climate Superfund Resolution in Northampton last Thursday. On Earth Day dozens rally in Amherst, calling on the Amherst Town Council and other municipalities in the Connecticut River Valley to join the call to make polluters pay. Thursday’s resolution in support of H.1014/S.588, “An Act to Establish a Climate Change Superfund”, was the first to pass in Western Massachusetts, following previous resolutions in Boston, Cambridge, Medford, and Malden. “I’ve watched my generation strike, resist, campaign, lose hope, and get back up again,” said Emma Coopersmith.

Just before the November 2024 election, the International Energy Agency (IEA) released its flagship annual report on global energy markets – and the agency’s forecast suggested a new era was dawning. Over 150 years of growth in demand for fossil fuels has nearly reached its end, the IEA’s forecasts showed for a second year in a row. Fossil fuel demand will peak by the end of this decade, the organization affirmed, concluding that clean energy like wind, solar, and storage look increasingly capable of driving fossil fuels out of global energy markets – and soon.

Members of Fossil Free London, Energy Embargo for Palestine and the Free West Papua Campaign gathered outside BP’s London HQ in St James’s Square last night ahead of BP’s AGM, taking place today. Campaigners held a banner reading ‘stop fuelling genocide and climate breakdown’, and chanting ‘Shut down BP’. Since the wake of Israel’s genocide on Gaza, BP has come under fire for its supply of energy supplies to Israel. In September 2024, Energy Embargo for Palestine identified in a research report that 30% of Israel’s total energy supplies passes through the Baku-Tblisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline, which has gone on to fuel military operations in Gaza.

Canada Fossil Fuel Subsidies Hit $30 Billion Amid Pipeline Push

Amid trade war talk of expanding Canadian energy infrastructure, a new report reveals that direct Canadian subsidies to the fossil fuel and petrochemical sectors reached nearly $30 billion in 2024. For comparison’s sake, Canada spent between $38 billion and $39 billion on defense in 2024. “Oil and gas companies – emboldened by their influence over President Trump – are exploiting the current economic uncertainty to call on governments to double down on fossil fuels,” Julia Levin, associate director of national climate with nonprofit group Environmental Defence, which put out the report, said in a statement.

American so-called “natural gas” (the mixture of hydrocarbons made up mostly of methane) production began to explode under President Barack Obama and has continued to increase under every president since. Liquified natural gas exports, which involve an energy intensive liquefaction process that enables the gas to be shipped, kicked off around 2016 and have also climbed steadily upwards every year. The main problem that the gas industry faces is not regulation, but markets: the rate of renewable adoption in Asia is exceeding all expectations and LNG markets are expected to be dramatically oversupplied in the coming years.

On a clear day overlooking the inner harbour of Prince Rupert, a northwest British Columbia town home to Canada’s third largest port, chances are you’ll see a spurt of water coming from the surface of the ocean. “I’ve lived here my whole life and every once in a while, you might get a glimpse of a humpback, but there have been so many humpback whales lately in the harbour, I’ve never witnessed that in my life. It’s a sign that our waters are healthy and abundant,” says Arnie Nagy, a member of the Haida Nation. Protesters Remind Labour That Rosebank Is A Sinking Ship

On Wednesday 19 March, campaigners from Fossil Free London staged a Titanic-themed demonstration in Westminster over the Labour Party government’s potential re-approval of the climate-wrecking Rosebank oil field. Campaigners recreated the infamous scene in which lead character Jack Dawson drowns as Rose clings to a door in the sea. They chanted “There’s an iceberg we don’t want to hit! Rosebank is a sinking ship” with a banner reading “Let Go of Rosebank”. This was to draw a creative parallel with the approaching climate emergency and the government’s potential reapproval of the project’s development.

Trondheim’s mayor has already recognized the need for change, calling for a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty. Yet, instead of following the city’s leadership and using this moment to amplify bold climate solutions, championship organizers have given center stage to Equinor — Norway’s national oil giant and one of the world’s biggest climate polluters.
