French Court Finds Monsanto Guilty Of Chemical Poisoning

In appeals court in Lyon, France has upheld a 2012 ruling against Monsanto, in which the agribusiness giant was found guilty of the chemical poisoning a farmer named Paul François. The grain grower said that in 2004 he became ill due to Monsanto’s weedkiller, Lasso. François claimed he suffered from neurological problems, memory loss, headaches and stammering after inadvertently inhaling the herbicide. In François’ case, doctors determined the cause of his ill health was monochlorobenzene, a highly toxic substance that made up 50 percent of Monsanto’s herbicide, according to teleSUR.

The hearing focused on the DoD’s actions related to carcinogenic perfluorinated chemicals found in fire-fighting foam routinely used in exercises at military bases around the world. The American military is poisoning people and the planet with these chemicals. My two U.S. Senators from Maryland, Chris Van Hollen and Ben Cardin, failed to subject Sullivan to serious questioning during this important hearing on the military’s response to lethal ground water contamination. Reading her testimony filled me with rage.

A group of doctors, nurses, and community advocates held a rally outside Providence Hospital in northeast Washington Thursday to demand the hospital remain open as is. Ascension, the organization that owns Providence Hospital, announced last month that it would end the hospital’s acute-care services by the end of this year and shift towards outpatient services, including preventative care, telemedicine and urgent care. “It means that there will be no inpatient services, no emergency room services,” said Dr. Lester Miles, president of medical and dental staff at Providence Hospital, who attended the rally. Miles said the medical staff at the hospital were caught off guard with the announcement, and weren’t told ahead of time about Ascension’s plans.
