Israel’s shock’n awe on Iran—straight from the trademark US playbook—essentially failed, despite the initial combination of speed, meticulous military planning and the element of surprise, including hacking the Iranian electronic communications within the military grid; decapitation of the vertical IRGC nomenklatura; the spiderweb drone attack playbook; and bombing—ultimately ineffectual—of key nodes of the Iranian nuclear infrastructure. It took hours for top Iranian technicians to get their grid back. And once that happened, the tide began to turn, to the point that after surgical missile volleys deep in the night on Sunday, the IRGC announced its capability to seriously disrupt Israel’s command and control systems using “enhanced intelligence,” thus breaching Iron—or Paper—Dome.

In response to Donald Trump’s recent declaration that the U.S. could become involved in Israel’s attacks on Iran, U.S. lawmakers are pushing efforts to curb the President’s war powers. Reps. Thomas Massie (R-KY.) and Ro Khanna (D-CA) are introducing a bipartisan bill that would force Trump to obtain congressional approval to enter the war. “This is not our war,” tweeted Massie. “But if it were, Congress must decide such matters according to our Constitution. I’m introducing a bipartisan War Powers Resolution tomorrow to prohibit our involvement. I invite all members of Congress to cosponsor this resolution.”

These points have effectively become death traps used as tools in Israel’s ongoing genocide against the Palestinian population for over 20 months. On Tuesday morning, at least 80 Palestinians were killed and 200 others injured by Israeli fire near a US-backed aid distribution point in eastern Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip, as they approached the site to collect aid.

The meeting will focus on the question of international law and accountability in the context of the ongoing crisis in Gaza. In a joint statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Colombia and the Department of International Relations and Cooperation of the Republic of South Africa, co-chairs of the group, stated that the meeting will outline a plan for concrete actions to enforce international law and end the genocide in Palestine through coordinated state action.

The risk of famine increases in Gaza as the Israeli government’s blockade of nearly all aid to Gaza approaches its third month. “I felt this almost sense of panic as every day went by without food let in,” Ash Bohrer, a Chicago-based Jewish activist in the Palestinian solidarity movement, told me as she outlined how high the stakes are as the genocide continues in Gaza. “When I first heard it, my initial thought was … if there is some way I can use my body,” Bohrer said, ​“I am ready and willing to do it, and I think about it as a personal, moral and religious obligation to do so.”

About 150,000 Israelis are stranded abroad due to Tel Aviv’s war on Iran and the shutdown of all flights caused by Iranian retaliatory missile strikes against Israel. Israeli authorities have launched a repatriation plan that has also barred Israelis from leaving. Rescue flights are not expected to start before 19 June at the earliest. The new plan has been launched by Israel’s Transportation Ministry and Civil Aviation Authority to bring back the Israelis. “The operation to return Israeli citizens residing abroad may begin toward the end of the week, and perhaps not until the beginning of next week. We are still studying the enemy, the patterns, to understand the ritual of the threats,” said the CEO of Israir, Uri Sirkis.
