This one time I played Pete Seeger’s banjo…

The first time I met Pete Seeger was at a People’s Music Network summer gathering about 10 years ago. I was a bright-eyed radical teenager who had just stolen all of my dad’s Phil Ochs CDs and was ready for revolution, but I was new to the folk scene and was probably the youngest person at the gathering by about 30 years. In terms of looks, I didn’t know Pete Seeger from Frank Sinatra.

How Chelsea Sees Herself; SF Pride Rectifies 2013 Error

Today, April 11th, the nation’s largest Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Pride Celebration Committee announced on its website that WikiLeaks whistle-blower Chelsea (formerly Bradley) Manning has been chosen to represent the event as an Honorary 2014 Grand Marshal. Manning thanked the San Francisco Pride Committee from Fort Leavenworth military prison. Chelsea has been working with artist Alicia Neal to illustrate how she sees herself, and wishes to look after receiving treatment for gender dysphoria at Fort Leavenworth military prison. The initial sketch for the portrait is being shared publicly for the first time today to coincide with the SF Pride announcement. Her portrait of Chelsea is above. The annual SF Pride celebration is the largest of its kind in the country, attracting up to 1.8 million people from around the world.

Six LGBT Activists Detained In Moscow

Six LGBT activists have been detained at the State Children's Library in Moscow. The detention took place after the activist Aleksey Davidov stood in front of the library building with a banner where there was written that "Being Gay is Normal". The manifestation was dedicated to the Russian law banning propaganda of "non-traditional sexual relationships" among the under-aged. The law came into force on the 29th of June this year. The police press office announced that the activists were detained for "violating social order" and that they have been "delivered to a police station for a decision to be made about administrative responsibility".

U.S. Pastor Behind Uganda’s Anti-Gay Law

Lively, a 56-year-old Massachusetts native, specializes in stirring up anti-gay feeling around the globe. In Uganda, which he first visited in 2002, he has cultivated ties to influential politicians and religious leaders at the forefront of the nation's anti-gay crusade. Just before the first draft of Uganda's anti-gay bill began circulating in April 2009, Lively traveled to Kampala and gave lengthy presentations to members of Uganda's parliament and cabinet, which laid out the argument that the nation's president and lawmakers would later use to justify Uganda's draconian anti-gay crackdown.

Massive Turnout At NC ‘Moral March’ Puts Right Wing On Notice

“Welcome to North Carolina,” reads one sign. “Turn your watch back 50 years!” You could say that the ”Moral Monday” movement and Saturday’s ”Mass Moral March” are the backlash against a backlash–against modernity. Since gaining the upper hand in the legislature in 2010 and securing the governorship in 2012, North Carolina’s GOP has gone on a rampage. In response, Moral Monday protests around the state have been growing in strength and numbers. People are fed up with the government’s hard-right turn and its seeming nostalgia for the pre-integration, pre-civil rights, and pre-feminist era. They came by busloads from Florida, New York, Alabama and Missouri and as far west as Oregon and Washington state to join ten of thousands of North Carolinians in Raleigh, the state capital.

The Olympics “United People Across The World…In Collective Disgust”

"In Vancouver, there were people chanting about the Olympics and indigenous rights. In Atlanta, the ACLU was up in arms about the jailing of thousands of young Black men in advance of the 1996 Games. In Greece back in 2004, there were armies of the ungrateful yammering about the exploding price tag and the deaths of Olympic workers. In Beijing, we heard carping about "human rights" and the crushing of dissent. In England, there were nattering nabobs of negativism dulling the Olympic shine by asking why fears of terror attacks were being used to harass activists, not to mention their whining about the extensive use of surveillance drones and cell phone monitoring. At every Olympics, you can cue the complaints, getting in the way when all we're trying to do is enjoy a good luge. Yet it took a visionary like Vladimir Putin, a man with the pecs to match his steely will, to finally figure out a way to unite the world and make the Olympics something for everybody. Everyone, thanks to Putin, has something to care about during the 2014 Sochi Games."

The U.S. Hypocrisy Over Russia’s Anti-Gay Laws

"Eight U.S. states, and several cities and counties, have some version of what we call “no promo homo” provisions. Before the United States condemns the Russian statute’s infringement of free speech and academic freedom, it should recognize that our own republican forms of government have repeatedly given rise to analogous restrictions[…]The underlying ideology of these statutes is the same: Everybody should be heterosexual, and homosexuality is per se bad. This ideology has never rested on any kind of evidence that homosexuality is a bad “choice” that the state ought to discourage. The ideology is a prejudice-laden legacy of a fading era. (In fact, the strategy is daffy: Even if homosexuality were a bad lifestyle choice, state laws are not an effective way to head off such a choice.) Putin has assured the International Olympic Committee that the law is merely symbolic. But in the United States, officially sanctioned anti-gay prejudice has contributed to classroom bullying and to the high level of suicides among gay teens."

New Study: LGBT-Friendly Policies Reduce Suicide Risk For All

"We know that LGBTQ students are at higher risk for suicide, in part because they are more often targeted for bullying and discrimination," said Elizabeth Saewyc, lead author of the study, to the University of British Columbia press. "But heterosexual students can also be the target of homophobic bullying. When poliices and supportive programs like the GSAs are in place long enough to change the environment of the school, it's better for students' mental health, no matter what their orientation."

Native American Tribes Challenge Oklahoma Gay Marriage Ban

Two gay men are getting married under Native American tribal law in Oklahoma, apparently circumventing a state law that does not allow same-sex unions. Activists said the marriage advances the cause of gay rights in a state that has blocked federal benefits for same-sex military couples in the past. Jason Pickel, 36, and Darren Black Bear, 45, who have been together for more than eight years, were planning a trip to Iowa to get married. But they changed their minds when the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes allowed them to pick up a marriage license on Friday in the tribes' courthouse after the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) was struck down, Pickel told Al Jazeera.

Iowa University Crowns Transgender Homecoming Queen

Steven Sanchez made history Friday when fellow students crowned him homecoming queen of the University of Northern Iowa. Sanchez, 21, was born male but identifies as both male and female. He is UNI’s first transgender homecoming queen or king. Sanchez, who as a child endured relentless bullying, said the moment left him speechless. A standing room-only crowd had packed into a campus auditorium and erupted in applause when his name was read. “I never would have thought years ago that I’d be standing on a stage, people cheering for me because they voted me homecoming queen,” he said. “It was unbelievable.” Yaw Kyeremateng was crowned king.

Central Islip Girl ‘Standing Up’ For Transgender Rights Wins Homecoming King

Traditionally, the title for homecoming king is bestowed upon a boy. At Central Islip Senior High School, this year’s title was given to a girl -- Faith Shepherd. Shepherd, 17, who said she came out as a lesbian when she was 13, decided to run for homecoming king to make a statement about gender roles in society. She said she was inspired by her friend Regina, who lives in North Carolina. She said they met through Facebook. Shepherd said Smith is transgender and has been bullied for years. "I did this for my friend Regina,” Shepherd said. “Transgenders don't get equal roles in society. Transgenders aren't always treated very nicely in society. This is me standing up for transgenders and my friend.” Riding in a car alongside her best friend, homecoming queen Valerie Baez, 17, Shepherd couldn't have been happier wearing her homecoming king sash over a suit jacket at the Central Islip homecoming parade.

A Tale Of Two Responses To LGBTI Violence

"The US is rightfully disturbed by deteriorating conditions for LGBTI people in Russia. In addition to legally sanctioned homophobia, widespread LGBTI hate crimes include harassment, torture and murder - and entrenched attitudes are responsible for a lamentable increase in suicides. Yet very few people have heard about the ubiquitous violence against LGBTI people in Honduras since the 2009 coup, despite a per capita LGBTI homicide rate that vastly outpaces Russia's. In the four years since democratically elected president Mel Zelaya was ousted, the number of murdered LGBTI people (90) is more than four times the number in the prior decade (20)"

Why I Admire Chelsea (Formerly Known As Bradley) Manning

I admire Manning for willingly taking on the role of scapegoat to attempt to hold the government accountable in the court of U.S. public opinion, even though she was blocked from doing so in the court in which she stood trial this past summer. While the national security state’s hegemony remains intact, Manning put a sizable dent in its armor. Lastly, I admire her for a different reason — for holding true not only to her principles (namely the commitment to peace and justice through ending the unjust occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq) but to her identity, which is just as inconvenient to the military as the crimes she exposed. She is an inspiration to everyone unfairly closeted due to gender or sexual identity and is now one of the leading foot soldiers in the struggle for transgender recognition and equality.

How Cultural Ignorance Is Killing Trans Americans

And on Aug. 27, while hundreds of mourners prepared to gather for a vigil in Nettles’ honor, “Fox and Friends” opened a segment on Manning with Aerosmith’s “Dude Looks Like a Lady.” These are not unrelated events. Our culture’s ignorance about transgender rights isn’t just a matter of semantics, media bluster or political fault lines; popular narratives that dehumanize the lives and experiences of trans people take a heavy human toll — and come with a body count. “They were called faggots, they were called he-shes, she-males, things of that nature,” Nettles’ mother, Dolores, told WABC of the assault, in which a 20-year-old man violently attacked Nettles after learning she was transgender. Nettles’ story is made more tragic by how common such violence is in the United States.

Chelsea Manning is Willing to Pay For Her Own Hormone Therapy

"It was Chelsea's intent to do this all along," David Coombs told the Associated Press last night, explaining why his client made her announcement so soon after she was sentenced. "It was only after Fort Leavenworth had said that they would not provide any sort of medical treatment that we decided not to wait." In his interview with the AP, Coombs also detailed the specifics of Manning's plan: She's willing to pay for estrogen treatments that would promote female characteristics including breast development, she does not want sex-reassignment surgery at this point, and she expects to be kept with men in prison. Coombs has made it clear that he'll pursue any and all legal options on behalf of his client if the prison prevents Manning from receiving the hormone therapy.
