Princeton, Woodrow Wilson And A Debate About Campus Activism

By Alan Gilbert for Democratic Individuality. Wilson was an unapologetic racist whose administration rolled back the gains that African-Americans achieved just after the Civil War, purged black workers from influential jobs and transformed the government into an instrument of white supremacy. The protesters’ top goal — convincing the university to rename the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs and the residential complex known as Wilson College — has drawn heavy fire from traditionalists. But the fact that racist policies enacted during Wilson’s presidency are still felt in the country today makes it imperative that the university’s board of trustees not be bound by the forces of the status quo. Wilson, who took office in 1913, inherited a federal government that had been shaped during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when thousands of African-American men and women passed Civil Service examinations or received political appointments that landed them in well-paying, middle-class government jobs in which they sometimes supervised white workers. This was anathema to Wilson, who believed that black Americans were unworthy of full citizenship and admired the Ku Klux Klan for the role it had in terrorizing African-Americans to restrict their political power.

The Story Of The Deadliest Police Force In The U.S.

By Jon Swaine and Oliver Laughland for the Guardian. In all, 13 people have been killed so far this year by law enforcement officers in Kern County, which has a population of just under 875,000. During the same period, nine people were killed by the NYPD across the five counties of New York City, where almost 10 times as many people live and about 23 times as many sworn law enforcement officers patrol. The deaths span from January to the early hours of last Sunday morning, when a man accused of firing at officers during a foot chase in downtown Bakersfield was shot and killed. One senior Bakersfield police officer has been involved in at least four deadly shootings in less than two years. Another officer separately shot dead three people within two months in 2010. Other law enforcement officers in Kern County have meanwhile been involved in deadly beatings of unarmed men, sex crimes against women and reckless car crashes resulting in criminal convictions. “They have some fine officers here, but unfortunately they have some bullies and thugs who often run the show,” Henry Mosier, who worked for the county as a public defender for a decade before his recent retirement, said in an interview.

Thomas Paine, Recycled Propaganda, White Power & COP21

Eleanor Goldfield for Occupy.com. On Act Out this week, let's use some common sense and talk about the rights of man. Next up, Recycled Propaganda, pure white low life scum, grab a seat at the middle east dinner table and from Paris to the globe, climate change can be slowed, if we make it so. But first, life is meaningless – like a blank page so get a brush, a crayon, a pen and paint your way.

Rural Alabama Cops Accused Of Mass False Arrests Of Blacks

By Steven Rosenfeld for AlterNet - Another explosive report of institutional racism by white police and prosecutors who willfully targeted black youths has emerged from one of the most remote regions of Alabama, the deep southeastern city of Dothan, where for years a handful of officers apparently planted drugs on hundreds of black youths and railroaded them into prison. The documentary trail of these arrests dating back to the late 1990s and a subsequent coverup by high-ranking county law enforcement officials was firstreported on HenryCountyReport.com. Reporter Jon B. Carroll describes how a handful of powerful officers and prosecutors targeted the youths for several years:

Activists Expose Online Racists In Billboard Near Their Homes

By Kali Holloway for AlterNet - Recently, the Cleveland Plain Dealer announced it had turned off comments on stories about Tamir Rice because “just about every piece we published about Tamir immediately became a cesspool of hateful, inflammatory or hostile comments.” The Montana Standard shared plans to end commenter anonymity, retroactively and going forward, due to “posters who consistently offer destructive and noxious comments.” A 2014 study found roughly seven racist tweets are sent every minute, which equals about 10,000 per day. And in recognition of just how much vitriolic racism exists on the video platform, satirical newspaper the Onion headlined an article “YouTube Reaches 1 Trillion Racist Comments.”

Newsletter: Past And Present Myths Are Indivisible

By Kevin Zeese and Margaret Flowers for Popular Resistance. This week two remarkable reports came out about US militarism. The first by James Lucas, documented that the US has killed 20 to 30 million people in 37 nations in wars since World War II. The second by Nicholas Davies showed the impacts of US militarism since 9/11 finding 120,000 air strikes in seven countries, occupation of Afghanistan for 14 years, Iraq for over 8 years, and destruction of Libya, Syria and Yemen, 1.6 million people killed, mostly civilians, and 59.5 million people driven from their homes.US military why did you kill my family This is quite a remarkable record. These reports coincided with the celebration of Thanksgiving. Popular Resistance published eight articles debunking the founding myths and highlighting reality of genocide against the Indigenous to take their land and slavery of Africans brought to the United States for free labor. There are deep problems in the US culture. They are built on myths that cover-up genocide, slavery, racism and poverty wages. All transformations begin with a revolution of the mind. We need to change the American consciousness.

Thanksgiving: Myths, Founding Sins, Within A Fraught Conversation

By Chauncey Devega for Salon. Like most national holidays, Thanksgiving is a myth. It does the powerful political work of encouraging American Exceptionalism: a belief that the United States was preordained by “God” for a special place among all others; and that it is a “shining city on the hill.” In reality, the arrival of the Mayflower (and other European explorers and colonists in the “New World”) would help to set into motion two of the greatest crimes in human history: the genocide of First Nations peoples and the enslavement and mass murder of black Americans. Stolen land and stolen labor are the twin bedrocks of American empire. Their influence was (and remains) so profoundly deep that it would take a civil war (what was really a second American Revolution) and then 100 years of additional struggle to strike down white supremacy as the formal public policy of the United States. First Nations peoples can never be made whole for the land (and lives) that was stolen from them. On Thanksgiving, the American people should, instead of being thankful for what they have–and by doing so playing along with a tired mythology of American genocide and slavery–should inaugurate a day of political activism and resistance. Instead of gorging on unhealthy food and watching football, it would be a truly meaningful Thanksgiving holiday if people stopped being thankful, got really angry, confronted power, and then fought and struggled to remedy the injustices in American society.

#BlackLivesMatter Thanksgiving Dinner Outside MN Precinct

By Staff for Ruptly. Black Lives Matter activists gathered outside a Police station in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Thursday, to enjoy a Thanksgiving Day meal as protesters continue to demand justice for 24-year-old Jamar Clark, who was killed by a police officer on 15 November. The protesters, who have been blocking the streets outside the Fourth Precinct Police Department on Plymouth Avenue for the 12th day in a row, spent the holiday at the protest encampment with neighbours and supporters donating food in solidarity with the movement. Hundreds of people passed by the camp to receive their Thanksgiving day meal offered by volunteers despite the cold temperatures and snow. Ongoing protests, organised by the 'Black Lives Matter' movement, have been held daily outside the Minneapolis Police Department's Fourth Precinct building since the killing of Jamar Clark. Witnesses say the 24-year-old black man was shot by police execution-style while handcuffed, an account which the Minneapolis Police Department disputes.

Black Protester Attacked At Trump Rally

By Adam Johnson for Alternet. Birmingham, AL - CNN political reporter Jeremy Diamond posted a video on his Twitter account this afternoon of a black protestor being "shoved, tackled, punched & kicked" at a Donald Trump rally in Birmingham, Alabama. When the Black Lives Matter protestor disrupted the rally, he was met with jeers and ultimately violence, as Trump yelled, "Get him the hell out of here," a command his supporters appear to have taken to heart. According to Diamond, the protestor's chant was also met with "All Lives Matter" counter-chants from some of the rally-goers before they began their assault.

Newsletter: Youth Recognize Their Power & Build It

By Kevin Zeese and Margaret Flowers for Popular Resistance. Youth are rising up. They have been showing leadership on multiple fronts of struggle. They see a broken system dysfunctional government that is corrupted by money. It is unable to respond to the crisis of climate change; the reality of systemic racism; students graduating with massive debt in a poor job market and so many other issues. Politicians aren’t the only voices with power. We have power, too. And we have more power when we act together. Young people don’t live single-issue lives. We live at the intersection of the most pressing problems today. Our movements are connected and our purpose is huge. Martin Luther King described the civil rights movement as a time when the “people moved their leaders, not the leaders who moved the people.” If enough of us push together toward a new vision, the world will begin to move. That is a message we should all take to heart. We should continue to exercise our power, continue to fight injustices and as we do so, our power will grow.

At Least Three Officers Commit Suicide And Blame Someone Else

By Danielle Wiener-Bronner for Fusion. Political organizer Keegan Stephan pointed out on Twitter that at least three police officers whose shootings prompted manhunts or were blamed on Black Lives Matter activists actually shot themselves. The tweet sparked a discussion on the social media platform. Some said that three is a relatively low number when compared to the amount of active police officers in the U.S., and that their actions shouldn’t be seen as representative of most cops. But taken together, the incidents are an upsetting look at how sentiment against the Black Lives Matter movement—which prompted the creation of counter movements like “Police Lives Matter”—can be fomented by false events. Here’s a breakdown of each incident.

Anonymous Releases Names Of KKK Members

By Amanda Girard for US Uncut - Ever since members of the Ku Klux Klan threatened Ferguson protesters last year, hacktivist collective Anonymous has been promising to hack KKK websites and release the information they find to the public. As of a few minutes ago, that information has been officially released. “We need to make room for important, blunt, honest, public, productive conversation. Violent bigotry IS a problem in the United States. This is not a colorblind society,” Anonymous’ #OpKKK organizers wrote in an official statement. “Part of the reason we have taken the hoods off of these individuals is not because of their identities, but because of what their hoods symbolize to us in our broader society.”

Hillary Clinton Speech Interrupted By Black Student Activists

By Julia Craven for Huffington Post - Hillary Clinton was drowned out by student activists while introducing her criminal justice reform platform in Atlanta on Friday. Two of the student activists who interrupted Hillary Clinton's rally Friday at Clark Atlanta University said the title of the event -- "African Americans for Hillary" -- explains why they decided to drown out the presidential candidate's remarks. "That raises a question, because I'm wondering, why it isn't Hillary for African Americans?" Avery Jackson, one of the students, told The Huffington Post. "Because that's the issue. She continues to exploit the spaces that black people value." "She doesn't really express the centering and prioritizing of black issues, which are at the root American issues," he continued. "I think we see that with the campaign -- that she sees the issues of black people outside of the American agenda." Clinton was at the university to unveil her criminal justice reform plan. She has been heavily criticized during the campaign for her past support for tough-on-crime initiatives that facilitated mass incarceration.
