Members of the public, NHS campaign groups and trade unions are acting to stop NHS England from introducing a cost-cutting Accountable Care Organisation contract that will make it harder to get the healthcare we are entitled to. In their hundreds, they are donating to help crowdfund a legal challenge to this contract in the Court of Appeal later this autumn. This legal challenge - brought by national campaign group 999 Call for the NHS and internationally recognised public law firm Leigh Day - is the only way of stopping the contract. Philadelphia, PA – The city that has gained a reputation for the egregious civil asset forfeiture practices committed by its police department, will now be forced to dismantle the program altogether, as a result of a lawsuit filed by a family who had their home seized by police after their son was accused of a minor drug crime. Residents who have been harmed by the Philadelphia Police department’s civil asset forfeiture practices could also receive part of $3 million in compensation. Markela and Chris Sourovelis initially filed a lawsuit in 2014 after their son was caught trying to sell $40 in heroin on the street. The parents complied with the judge and took their son to a court-ordered rehabilitation treatment. But when they returned home, they found that police had locked them out of their house.

In 2016, when prisoners engaged in similar hunger strikes, sit-ins, and work stoppages, their actions barely registered with the national media. As someone who regularly writes about the history of prisoner protests and prison conditions today, this lack of interest was striking. This time around, though, prisoner demands to improve the conditions of confinement have captured the attention of reporters everywhere. Call in to demand an end to repression against organizing prisoners. North Carolina DPS is keeping three prisoners in segregation in response to the strike activity at Hyde correctional facility that occurred on August 20. The three prisoners are also facing trumped up "active rioter" infractions. We demand that repression against these prisoners stop. Call in and tell DPS director Kennith Lassiter to move these men out of segregation and remove the infraction charges against them.

On 26 September, three people – including a teacher and a soil scientist – became the first anti-fracking protesters sent to jail. Two were sentenced to 16 months, one to 15 months, and a fourth person received a suspended sentence of 12 months. The four were convicted of causing a public nuisance following a trial in August. As part of the protests at the Preston New Roadfracking site, they climbed on top of lorries delivering equipment to the site and stayed there for four days. The prosecution argued that the protest cost the fracking firm Cuadrilla £50,000 and the police £12,000. But the protesters’ barrister Kirsty Brimelow pointed out it was a peaceful protest. Brimelow further stated that freedom of speech was not just “simply standing and shouting”.

First, Trump enacted the Muslim ban, which was aimed at preventing green-card holders and visa holders — that is, people who were coming to the United States legally —from entering the country. The Supreme Court has upheld a slightly watered-down version of the Muslim ban. It’s a version that seeks to prevent refugees from Muslim countries from entering the United States. These are refugees from countries in the Middle East that have been the victims of U.S. wars for oil and profit, countries that have been subjected to endless bombings and the devastation of their basic infrastructures. Trump has also limited asylum for refugees from Central America; countries that have been ravaged by U.S. economic and military intervention that has displaced millions of people.

If Attorney General Jeff Sessions is waging war to dismantle sanctuary cities, imagine how he feels about "freedom cities." Austin, Texas, became the latest major city to declare itself a "freedom city" in June, when the city council passed resolutions instructing the city's police officers to arrest fewer people for minor crimes like possessing a small amount of marijuana and driving without a valid license, as well as taking steps to protect undocumented immigrants. "Freedom city policies are basically an expansion of the old sanctuary city policies," said Austin Council member Greg Casar, who helped write the resolutions. "They pick up where sanctuary policies were cut off."

Canada's Coeur Mexicana mining company had reached a deal with the people of Guazapares, but then proceeded to violate the terms of that agreement. A group of 130 security officers from Chihuahua in Mexico broke up a sit-in protesting a Canadian mine, shooting into the air and arresting two of their leaders late last month. Canada's Coeur Mexicana mining company had reached a deal with the people of Guazapares, a small town in the Tarahumara highlands in northern Mexico, to use their territory and extract silver. But since the company failed to comply with the agreement, the community has been campaigning against it for three years. The August 20 sit-in lasted for 10 days until security forces, under the command of right-wing Governor Javier Corral, showed up – without identification or arrest warrants.

In an interview with Consortium News Editor-in-Chief Joe Lauria, Pentagon Papers whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg says the Espionage Act, under which he was indicted, cannot apply to Julian Assange because he is a journalist. Speaking during an online vigil for Assange organized by Unity4J.com, Ellsberg told Lauria that the motive for U.S. leaders to protect their secrets and go after Assange has nothing to do with their mantra of “national security.” “The purpose is not to protect national security, but to protect the asses of the people who wrote the directives” of classified material, most of which should never have been classified, Ellsberg said. Ellsberg, 87, said that as a publisher and journalist, the Espionage Act cannot be applied to Assange, as it should not have been applied to Ellsberg for non-spying activities when he released the Pentagon Papers revealing that the U.S.

Witnesses described more than 50 heavily armed officers: local police, sheriff’s deputies, some from other agencies. Many shielded their identity with black ski masks. The score from this elaborate, multi-agency gang taskforce effort? A single “roach” from an ashtray, containing a quantity of marijuana too small to trigger an arrest. The homeowner was given a written citation. Minutes away, at a downtown courthouse, the police department was entering its first day on trial.
