As a collective, we are living in unprecedented times. The triple pandemic of COVID-19, white supremacy, and capitalist-driven climate crisis has intensified survival fears and made the structural oppression we are living under more palpable and unbearable. We are coming face to face with the fact of our interdependence, and the stakes are high. Either we as a species learn to live well with each other and the earth now, or die trying. As so many wise souls are reminding us, our liberation is bound together, and we need each other, now, more than ever.

The United States' elections will occur in a few weeks and many people are concerned about what will happen. Will they be able to vote? Will their votes be counted? Will the process be prolonged? Will President Trump refuse to leave the White House if he loses? Groups are beginning to organize to protest if President Trump stays in office, whether he is re-elected or not. What is happening now is really not very different from what happens every four years, although perhaps it's more exaggerated.

As shown by authors like Dan Clawson in his 2003 book The Next Upsurge, unions tend to grow in spurts, as part of working-class uprisings that pose a deep challenge to the powers that be. The upsurges in the private sector from 1934 to 1939, when the CIO organized industry-wide, with sitdowns when necessary, and the AFL tried to catch up, and in the public sector from 1962 to 1972, when a wave of illegal strikes established the right to bargain, were rooted in militant worker action. The system began to lose legitimacy and workers got a sense of their collective power. Similar dynamics played out during the 1897-1904 upsurge in the U.S.

Beirut - Over a thousand protesters on Saturday marched across Beirut to mark one year since Lebanon’s mass uprising against its ruling political parties swept across the country.  Demonstrators chanted slogans against the country's political officials while holding Lebanese flags and banners. After passing by the Central Bank and the Ministry of the Interior, they continued towards the remains of the Beirut port, destroyed in a devastating blast on 4 August. The blast, widely blamed on Lebanon's political class, through a mixture of corruption and incompetence, killed more than 190 people and wounded over 6,500. 

Chile To Mark First Anniversary Of Its Social Outbreak

Chile's Constituent Unity Pact (CUP) called on citizens to commemorate the first anniversary of the social outbreak with pot-banging, honking, cycling, caravans, and cultural activities. "Although the best way to remember this date will be to take part in the plebiscite, the people will also take to the streets peacefully," the CUP stated. On Sunday, a massive rally is expected in "The Dignity Square," which has been the epicenter of demonstrations in Santiago City. "In the last year, over a million Chileans have taken to the streets to demand their rights."

Beloved U.S. activist Kevin Zeese was celebrated in a virtual tribute on Saturday, in which participants heard stories and praise on Kevin’s work from journalist Chris Hedges, former presidential candidate Ralph Nader, Venezuelan Vice Foreign Minister Carlos Ron, international human rights activist Ajamu Baraka and many others. Kevin Zeese, a father, public interest attorney, organizer and activist for 40 years who worked on a broad range of issues, passed away suddenly on September 6, 2020. Due to the pandemic, the family opted to organize the online tribute to him, to bring together Kevin’s friends, family and mentors.

Defending Rights & Dissent was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Kevin Zeese over the weekend. Over his life, he was on the frontlines of many causes–whistleblower protections, election integrity, single payer healthcare, net neutrality, reforming our criminal justice system, environmental justice, and peace. He was the press secretary for Ralph Nader’s 2004 presidential campaign and in 2006 ran for Senate in Maryland with the backing of both the Green and Libertarian Parties.

Power to the people! We have the power to change if we stay united. We have incredible opportunity now. We see the movement’s growing, especially after the Democratic National Convention and Republican National Convention. The conventions showed us that those parties do not represent the people and that our power is not in elections. Our power is in building people power — and we see that happening. We need to build power, so that in 2021 people can rule from below. So that we can call general strikes.
