Good-Bye Harper, Now It Is Time To Push Trudeau

By Brent Patterson for the Council of Canadians - More than a year ago the Council of Canadians set twin objectives for this federal election: to get out the vote and to defeat the Harper government. Both were accomplished last night. More than 17.5 million people, about 68 per cent of all eligible voters, cast a ballot in this election. That's a dramatic increase of almost 3 million voters from the 14.8 million people, or 61.4 per cent of eligible voters, who voted in May 2011. And last night not only was Stephen Harper defeated as prime minister, he resigned as leader of the Conservative Party. We celebrate both of these accomplishments. We should rightly celebrate the defeat of Stephen Harper, a significantly increased voter turnout, and an election apparently relatively free of the voter suppression evident in the last federal election, but we will have to campaign even harder now to ensure that the 70 per cent of Canadians who said "it was the time for change" in Ottawa this election, get the change they deserve.

Lima: 5,000 Protest Against World Bank, IMF, And TPP

By Michael S. Wilson for NACLA - At the annual governors’ meeting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank in Lima between October 5th and 12th, an estimated 800 representatives from 188 countries negotiated the shape of the world’s soon-to-be renovated finance infrastructure. While the international media focused on the official event, 1,200 people attended the Plataforma Alternativa conference—a parallel three-day meeting organized under the theme “Belying the ‘Peruvian Miracle.’” The World Bank and IMF’s governor’s meeting was safeguarded by three perimeters of police.

Why Trans-Pacific Partnership Equals A U.S. Aircraft Carrier

By Stephen Gowans of Information Clearing House - October 17, 2015 "Information Clearing House" - "what's left" - The U.S. political elite is never entirely secretive about its aims. It spells them out, maybe not always clearly and maybe sometimes elliptically, but it is fairly open in declaring its objectives and how it intends to achieve them. When she was U.S. secretary of state, Hilary Clinton adumbrated the Trans-Pacific Partnership in a 2011 article in Foreign Affairs, the magazine of the Council on Foreign Relations, an elite-consensus forming organization which Laurence H. Shoup in a recent book dubbed “Wall Street’s Think Tank”, and, in an earlier book, an “imperial brain trust.”

Newsletter – A People United Will Never Be Defeated

By Margaret Flowers and Kevin Zeese for Popular Resistance. This week, hundreds of thousands rallied in Washington, DC for the Million Man March, more information became available regarding US war crimes, we celebrated the second annual People's Climate March and World Food Day and we are preparing a mass mobilization to protest the TransPacific Partnership. Popular Resistance is collaborating with a growing number of organizations and people to protest the TransPacific Partnership and other international treaties that will prevent us from achieving success in our struggles for racial, economic and environmental justice. We are planning a mass mobilization in Washington, DC this November to show the large and diverse opposition to agreements that force us to sacrifice the health and safety of our communities for corporate profits. There will be two days of action preparation followed by three full days of creative events. You are invited to participate in any way that you can.

Hundreds March On API Against TPP, Climate Catastrophe

By Luke for DC Indie Media - On the 14th of October, hundreds of people turned out for a march on the American Petroleum Institute (API) against the climate chaos they are lobbying for. The march also was in opposition to the TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnershop) a trade deal the oil industry had a strong role in shaping. With popular groups now doing everything possible to block ratification of the TPP, turnout for this protest mushroomed, with everyone from the SEIU to opponents of the PEPCPO/Exelon merger showing up. The protest began with a march from Franklin Square to the L st offices of API. This march was on the sidewalk to gain the most direct approach to the space in front of API.

Obama On TPP: ‘We Are Writing The Rules,’ Who’s We?

By Jim Hightower for Creators - The negotiations and the sales push behind Washington's latest (and biggest) "free trade" agreement amounts to Kabuki theater. What theater? Kabuki. It's a 17th-century form of Japanese drama, featuring elaborate sets and costuming, rhythmic dialogue and stylized acting and dancing. That does, indeed, nicely sum up the White House's production of the Trans-Pacific Partnership: Its negotiations have been set in luxury resorts around the world, covered by elaborate secrecy; insiders wear the costumes of global corporate power; trade officials parrot rhythmic dialogue about high standards and incredible benefits for all. And the president himself is the main actor, dramatically proclaiming that TPP is "the most progressive" trade deal ever, and now he's doing a stylized political dance in hopes of winning congressional approval. What a phenomenal show!

Doctors Without Borders: TPP Worst For Medicine Access

By Tharanga Yakupitiyage for IPS - UNITED NATIONS, Oct 7 2015 (IPS) - “The TPP [Trans-Pacific Partnership] will…go down in history as the worst trade agreement for access to medicines in developing countries,” said Doctors without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in a statement following the signing of the TPP trade deal. The controversial agreement is the largest trade deal in a generation, bringing together 12 countries around the world including the United States to govern 40 percent of the world’s economy. Negotiations on the TPP deal, initiated in 2008, finally came to a conclusion on Oct. 5 in the southern US city of Atlanta. It includes a range of economic policies including lowered tariffs as well as standards for labor law, environmental regulation, and international investments.

People’s Climate Movement Demands Bold Action

By Kevin Zeese for Popular Resistance - On October 14th the People's Climate Movement showed the breadth and diversity of the movement for climate justice, sending a message to the US government as it prepares to go to Paris for the UN Climate negotiations in November. In announcing the nationwide protests held this Wednesday, the People's Climate March wrote: The People’s Climate March on Sept. 21, 2014 signaled to both U.S. and global leaders that large numbers of people in the United States cared about the climate crisis. Not only was the march the largest action on climate in history, but we successfully changed the notion that climate change was just an environmental issue. The march made it clear that this is also a social and economic justice struggle. Building off of the energy and success of the march, the People’s Climate Movement was formed to continue to build on that energy and excitement and expand across the country. This fall, front-line communities impacted by the environmental crisis and climate change, are joining with workers, people of faith, students, immigrants, racial, climate and economic justice activists and other community members, to call for bold action on climate at the local, national and global levels. As you can see from the tweets below, they achieved their goals.

Scenes From A Wonderful Parade Against The TPP

By Victor Grossman for Counter Punch - Berlin. It was a day to remember, a date for the record books! It marked a surprising development in German politics! And who said Germans don’t like protest marches or demonstrations? The organizers counted 250,000, a quarter of a million. Of course the police scaled that down – to 150,000. But who’s counting – it was definitely the biggest since 2003 against the Iraq War. It was a protest against the “Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership”, TTIP, and its equally spurned Canadian sister, CETA. Like their US-Pacific clone TPP, both are to be shoved through the JA-vote mill, with little discussion of their contents, or even knowledge of them, after years of top-secret sessions with big biz experts and lobbyists.

Tell Congress To Reject The TPP!

By Popular Resistance. On November 18, we and our allies will deliver thousands of petitions to Congress calling on them to reject the TransPacific Partnership (TPP) as part of the #FallRising mobilization in Washington, DC. At least, that's what we hope to do. TransAtlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) resisters in the European Union delivered more than 3 million petitions on October 7th. To reach our goal, we need you to click on the link below, sign and share the petition. Research and the history of trade agreements since NAFTA show that these types of trade agreements produce trade deficits, lost jobs, lower wages and environmental damage. The TPP’s scope is too broad. It usurps the legislative authority of Congress by writing rules concerning safety and labeling of foods, access to healthcare and medicine, regulation of banks, rights or workers, future energy sources and so much more. Essentially, its scope is everything. These are issues that should be considered by Congress not written in secret by trade negotiators.

The TPP Will Give Us Corporate Nationhood

By Dennis Trainor for Occupy, After years of secret talks, the United States and 11 other nations announced Monday that they'd reached agreement on the Trans-Pacific Partnership, or TPP. It’s been called NAFTA on steroids, and is viewed as a Trojan horse to usher in a global corporate coup. Because if you think the concept of corporate personhood is bad news, the TPP only strengthens the legal framework for corporate nationhood. Acronym TV host Dennis Trainor, Jr. talks with Kevin Zeese about the battle to defeat the TPP, Hillary Clinton’s reversal on the deal, and the long trail of lies told by U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman. Also interviewed for this segment is Rep. Alan Grayson.

Miami Commissioners Pass Resolution Agaisnt Secrecy in Trade Deals

By Staff of Flush The TPP - Miami, Fla. — City of Miami Commissioners unanimously passed a resolution this morning calling for greater transparency in trade policymaking that affects south Florida’s economy, environment and public health. Their action comes just ten days before trade negotiators from the United States and European Union meet in Miami for their 11th round of talks on the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), a companion to the just-completed Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), whose text still remains secret. “These massive trade agreements have a very real effect on jobs, wages, the environment and public health in our communities,” said Deborah Dion, Florida State Director, Citizens Trade Campaign.

The Sound Of Science, Divest For Our Future, Trade 4 People & Scream At Me

By Eleanor Goldfield for Occupy.com - This week, it's about time we hear about climate change – but really hear it. Does freedom mean the right to refuse to serve people because of race or other aspects of someone you don't like? Is that what freedom means? Music can turn abstract numbers of climate change into something we can feel and hear. Here's how a group of musicians turns the last 130 years of climate data into climate music. Victoria Fernandez from 350.org dishes on the political and public effects of divestment – uninvesting money invested in carbon fuels – surprising, but money matters. Bravo to those who shut down the San Francisco financial district over climate change investments. Then starting October 10, we've got a week long, international push for people and planet and against the corporatocracy. Action required immediately: Time to stop those trade deals. Sweden deserves a shout out for plans to go carbon free and move to renewable energy. And finally, scream for me -- join the Rooftop Revolutionaries montage of screams. But first, we reserve your rights.

Millions Voice Opposition To ‘Corporate Power Grab’ Trade Deals

By Andrea Germanos for Common Dreams, Organizers of a citizens' initiative on Wednesday delivered a petition with over three million signatures to the European Commission headquarters in Brussels in their continuing bid to stop trade deals they say pose a threat to democracy and boon to corporate interests. They say the number of signatures—over 3.2 million at the time of publication—is proof of the vast public opposition to the trade deals in question: the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between the EU and Canada, and the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) between the EU and United States. "By signing this petition, an unprecedented three million people from countries across Europe have made it clear that they reject these dangerous Trojan horse treaties which benefit big corporations at the expense of people," stated Magda Stoczkiewicz, director of Friends of the Earth Europe.

Hillary Clinton Comes Out Against TPP

By Amanda Terkel and Zach Carter for The Huffington Post, WASHINGTON -- Hillary Clinton came out against the Trans-Pacific Partnership Wednesday, breaking with President Barack Obama on the 12-nation trade deal that is set to become a key part of his legacy. "As of today, I am not in favor of what I have learned about it," Clinton told Judy Woodruff of "PBS Newshour." "I have said from the very beginning that we had to have a trade agreement that would create good American jobs, raise wages and advance our national security. And I still believe that's the high bar we have to meet," she said. "I have been trying to learn as much as I can about the agreement. But I'm worried. I'm worried about currency manipulation not being part of the agreement. We've lost American jobs to the manipulations that countries, particularly in Asia, have engaged in.
