Ruling To Return Kilmar Abrego Garcia Gives Clues About How to Fight Back

On Friday, April 4, a Federal District Judge ordered that Kilmar Abrego García, a Salvadoran man who was erroneously and illegally sent to El Salvador’s notorious CECOT prison, be returned home by midnight on Monday, April 7, 2025. During a hearing in the lawsuit filed to demand his return, the judge discussed with the Justice Department attorney many ways in which Abrego García’s arrest and deportation were unlawful. She also reached the resounding conclusion that the US government still has effective custody over him and can restore him “to status quo”—meaning living with his family and working legally in Maryland.

Canada’s Support For LNG Is Support For Trump’s Fossil-Fuelled Fascism

American so-called “natural gas” (the mixture of hydrocarbons made up mostly of methane) production began to explode under President Barack Obama and has continued to increase under every president since. Liquified natural gas exports, which involve an energy intensive liquefaction process that enables the gas to be shipped, kicked off around 2016 and have also climbed steadily upwards every year. The main problem that the gas industry faces is not regulation, but markets: the rate of renewable adoption in Asia is exceeding all expectations and LNG markets are expected to be dramatically oversupplied in the coming years.

Trump Oversees ‘Record Breaking’ Militarization Of West Asia

The US military has carried out its largest offensive deployment to West Asia since the start of Israel's war on Gaza and Lebanon in October 2023, coinciding with threats by President Donald Trump to start a major bombing campaign against Iran, Haaretz reported on 2 April. According to an analysis of open-source aviation data by the Israeli newspaper, the US military has sent additional squadrons of fighter jets, stealth bombers, and quantities of weaponry in recent weeks. The new build-up amounts to a roughly 50 percent increase over the previous monthly peak in US military flights to the region.

HHS Employees Learn Of Layoffs When Their ID Badges Stop Working

The Department of Health and Human Services is laying off thousands of employees, in some cases eliminating entire offices and programs. HHS began sending reduction-in-force (RIF) notices around 5 a.m. EDT Tuesday morning, according to more than half a dozen employees who spoke to Federal News Network. Several HHS employees shared photos of staff waiting in long lines to get into their buildings. Employees targeted by the RIF learned their Personal Identity Verification (PIV) cards were deactivated. “The way people are finding out whether they are RIF’d this morning is to go through this very long process to get to the building and to go through security, and then badge-in at the main atrium.

Trump Takes Aim At Globalization On ‘Liberation Day’

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump announced that the United States will impose a 10 percent tariff on all imports and additional, much higher rates for specific nations, in what he called “Liberation Day” for U.S. trade policy.  The universal baseline tariff will begin on April 5 and the added penalties will take effect by April 9. The countries being specifically targeted for being “unfair trade partners” are China (which is being hit with a 34 percent tariff), Japan (24 percent), and the nations included in the European Union (20 percent). There is increasing fear among sectors of the American ruling class and some think tanks that Trump’s tariffs are fueling geopolitical shifts and further jeopardizing U.S. hegemony.

United States Escalates Tension With Panama

“We are paying a monthly fee to Republican party lobbyists. In December, they were saying on CNN that they had already invaded Panama and could do it again. The Panamanian state is funding its own invasion.” Panamanian student organizer Ahmed X with student group Juventudes Revolucionarias, said in an interview after protests escalated on February 1st.  Ahmed, like many Panamanians, are increasingly concerned about Panama’s president José Raúl Mulino’s ability to defend the country’s sovereignty against U.S. interests. Since the beginning of Trump's presidency U.S. colonial ambitions in Panama have escalated dramatically, the republican party lobby in question is the BGR Group , a lobbying and communications firm that president Mulino hired to assist Panama with navigating current U.S. relations.

They’re All Going to Hell For The Genocide Of Gaza

Every single one of them ….who participated in the US and Israeli genocide of Gaza …..are going to hell! I’m not much of a believer in hell but I sure as hell hope there is one now... because a lot of people need to go there. What the Israeli politicians and military have done to Gaza with the complicity of United States Presidents, the US Congress and US military is deserving of going to hell!! I hope every one of the souls of the children killed by US bombs dropped by the Israeli military will visit every one of the perpetrators of the genocide of the Palestinians in Gaza.

Columbia University Medical Staff Protests Cuts In Health Care

Members of the Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) in New York City held a solidarity gathering on March 27 to protest proposed cuts of grants to universities and colleges in the area of health care by the Trump administration. The main demands were: “Protect our patients! Protect our research! Protect our teaching! Protect our students!” The motivation for this protest reads in part: “Several CUIMC researchers will share their stories about their terminated grants, and we hope to build a community who want to raise our voices against the assaults on higher education and especially on health research from the federal government.”

With Section 230 Repeal, Democrats, Media Offer New Censorship Tools

In a move that threatens to constrain online communication, congressional Democrats are partnering with their Republican counterparts to repeal a niche but crucial internet law. According to tech trade publication the Information (3/21/25), Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin (Ill.) has allied with Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham (S.C.) to reintroduce a bill that would repeal Section 230, a provision of the 1996 Communications Decency Act. Section 230 dictates that when unlawful speech occurs online, the only party responsible is the speaker, not the hosting website or app or any party that shared the content in question.

More Than 1,900 Scientists Warn That US Science Is ‘Being Annihilated’

More than 1,900 scientists who are members of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) have signed a letter warning the American public of the “danger” of Trump administration attacks on science. The administration’s attack on scientific institutions in the United States has included cancellations of federal grants to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions; the firing of NASA, NOAA and other government employees; investigations and threats to private universities; resignations; and censorship, reported The Guardian.

Mahmoud Khalil’s Attorney: ‘This Is The McCarthy Era All Over Again’

A federal judge in New Jersey will soon issue a ruling on where the deportation case of Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian student who led the student encampment at Columbia University last year, can be litigated. On March 8, Khalil was abducted in New York by agents from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) who told him his lawful permanent residency status had been “revoked.” He is now languishing in a notorious Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) jail in Louisiana, more than 1,000 miles from his U.S. citizen wife who is over eight months pregnant, while U.S. District Judge Michael E. Farbiarz decides where his case will be heard. Khalil has been charged with no crime.

The New Face Of Christian Zionism

On October 12, 2024, tens of thousands of people thronged outside the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C., for what organizers called the “A Million Women” rally. The event was staged by a clutch of leaders of the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR), a dynamic and fast-growing Christian Right movement that has influenced hundreds of millions of people around the world, including tens of millions in the United States. Timed to coincide with the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, the themes of the gathering included winning Christian “dominion” over political institutions, mobilizing voters and — in keeping with the movement’s focus on the idea of spiritual warfare — exorcizing demons from the Capitol.

Student Debtors Under Attack, Organize For Free Education For All

In recent days, the Trump administration issued an executive order to dismantle the Department of Education. Legally, this cannot be done without Congress, but in practice, this means most of the staff was simply fired. We talked a little bit about what that means for student debtors in this Twitter thread. In short, this makes the student debt crisis much worse. Shortly after that, Trump ordered the entire federal student debt portfolio — all $1.7 trillion — to be moved from the Department of Education to the Small Business Administration (SBA). The Small Business Administration is another agency within the federal government.

Trump Administration Using ‘State Secrets Privilege’ As It Was Intended

President Donald Trump’s administration invoked the “state secrets privilege” to prevent a United States court from reviewing the abduction of immigrants, mostly Venezuelans, who were flown to El Salvador and Honduras. A number of explainers related to the Venezuelan migrants case have been written about the state secrets privilege. One in particular from CNN suggested that Trump had broken with “past practice.” Most of them gloss over or omit similarities between this case and the 1953 case known as U.S. v. Reynolds, which established the state secrets privilege.

Recording Reveals Social Security Head’s Thoughts On DOGE And Trump

Since the arrival of a team from Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, Social Security is in a far more precarious place than has been widely understood, according to Leland Dudek, the acting commissioner of the Social Security Administration. “I don’t want the system to collapse,” Dudek said in a closed-door meeting last week, according to a recording obtained by ProPublica. He also said that it “would be catastrophic for the people in our country” if DOGE were to make changes at his agency that were as sweeping as those at USAID, the Treasury Department and elsewhere.
