UN And EU Confirm Venezuela Far From Being A Narco-Country

Last June, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) released its World Drug Report 2025, a key document that illustrates the findings of the UN’s global information system regarding the drug problem. This report is the most important of its kind in the world because it compiles information from governments and security agencies. It is used by governments to develop their policies and coordinate efforts in their fight against drug trafficking. The document was referenced by President Nicolás Maduro, who cited some of its mentions of Venezuela. According to the UNODC, Venezuela has consolidated its position over the past 15 years as a territory free of coca leaf cultivation, marijuana and cocaine processing, the president said, citing the report. This figure is particularly relevant given that global cocaine production has increased significantly to 3,708 tons per year, according to the agency.

A group of leading academics, legal experts and human rights advocates have called for the creation of a UN-mandated international military force to stop Israel's 22-month-long war on the besieged Gaza Strip. In a statement on Monday, Richard Falk, the president of the Gaza Tribunal Project and a former UN special rapporteur, called on the international community to implement the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) principle. "Law has failed, because it has not been enforced," Falk said at a press conference in Istanbul as he urged the international community to use R2P as a framework for intervention. He noted that the lack of enforcement had left Palestinians unprotected despite clear evidence of mass atrocities.

A new ruling from the World Court provides climate activists new tools for demanding accountability. On July 23, in a stunning 140 page advisory opinion, the International Court of Justice (ICJ, or World Court) held for the first time that there is a human right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment, and countries have a legal obligation to protect the climate from greenhouse gas emissions. The ICJ found that climate change poses “an existential problem of planetary proportions that imperils all forms of life and the very health of our planet.”

In a landmark finding, the United Nations’ top court on Wednesday issued an advisory opinion stating that a “clean, healthy and sustainable environment” is a human right. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling supports the obligation of UN member states to tackle the climate crisis and outlines the consequences they could face if they fail to do so. “The consequences of climate change are severe and far-reaching: they affect both natural ecosystems and human populations. These consequences underscore the urgent and existential threat posed by climate change,” said ICJ president Yuji Iwasawa, as The Guardian reported.

The day after Donald Trump welcomed indicted war criminal Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the United States for the third time in less than six months, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio imposed sanctions against UN Special Rapporteur on Occupied Palestine Francesca Albanese for her clear-eyed critiques of Israel’s genocide. In a July 9 press statement, Rubio charged that Albanese “has directly engaged with the International Criminal Court (ICC) in efforts to investigate, arrest, detain, or prosecute nationals of the United States or Israel, without the consent of those two countries.”

Her office is tasked with monitoring and reporting on human rights violations that Israel commits against Palestinians. Albanese, who regularly receives death threats and endures well-orchestrated smear campaigns directed by Israel and its allies, valiantly seeks to hold those who support and sustain the genocide accountable. She lambasts what she calls “the moral and political corruption of the world” that allows the genocide to continue.

It’s long been obvious to anyone following Rwanda’s 30-year war of aggression in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) that Rwandan President Kagame’s ultimate goal is to annex the mineral-rich Kivu Provinces bordering Rwanda. His project has come closer to fruition every year since his M23 militia re-emerged in a new push to claim territory and mines in November 2021. The June 2025 UN Group of Experts Report on DRC makes abundantly clear that he is now in de facto control of both provinces. His troops seized Goma, the capital of North Kivu Province, in January. They seized Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu Province in February.

United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights Elisa Morgera on Monday presented a new report to the General Assembly calling for the criminalization of spreading disinformation regarding the climate crisis, as well as a complete ban on fossil fuel lobbying and advertising by the industry. In The imperative of defossilizing our economies report, Morgera argues that the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom and other rich fossil fuel countries are legally bound by international law to phase out gas, oil and coal by the end of the decade, in addition to compensating communities for the harms caused.

UN Experts Urge United Kingdom Not To Misuse Terrorism Laws

UN experts* today urged the United Kingdom not to ban the “direct action” group Palestine Action as a terrorist organisation under the Terrorism Act 2000. “We are concerned at the unjustified labelling of a political protest movement as ‘terrorist’,” the experts said. “According to international standards, acts of protest that damage property, but are not intended to kill or injure people, should not be treated as terrorism.” The Government asserts that the group is “terrorist” because some members have allegedly caused criminal damage to property, including at military bases and arms companies, with the aim of progressing its political cause and influencing the Government. Proscription would trigger a range of criminal offences relating to support for the group.

Iran Ratifies Ending Cooperation With United Nations Nuclear Watchdog

Iran’s Guardian Council ratified a bill on 26 June to suspend all cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The move came a day after parliament overwhelmingly approved the measure in response to Israeli and US attacks on the country’s nuclear sites. France and Russia have both warned against the move, urging Iran to maintain cooperation with the UN agency and avoid escalating the nuclear standoff further. The law halts all IAEA inspections, oversight, and reporting, and will remain in effect until Iran receives guarantees for the safety of its nuclear facilities and personnel, along with recognition of its enrichment rights under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

Relatives of Venezuelan migrants detained in El Salvador for 100 days reported this Tuesday, June 24, to the Secretariat of the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, on the violations of individual rights faced by the detained migrants. “We were received and heard individually and collectively, we presented our cases, 252 broken families, our relatives were violated and taken to a CECOT prison in an arbitrary manner, there was no notification, it was under deception, without due process,” declared Mairelys Cacique, who belongs to the committee of relatives of Venezuelan migrants detained in the Central American country.

Israel is signaling an interest in concluding its war with Iran in the near future, according to Israeli and Arab officials who spoke with the Wall Street Journal. The effort comes after US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities and another wave of Iranian missiles targeting Israel. Israeli officials said they believe the current military phase is nearing its conclusion and expect to finish striking the remaining targets in Iran within days. The goal, officials added, is to pressure Iran back to the negotiating table and secure a commitment to permanently abandon its nuclear program. On Monday, Iran conducted the 21st wave of missile and drone attacks on Israel, inflicting heavy damage in multiple cities.

Veterans, Allies Fast For Gaza: ‘We Cannot Normalize Genocide’

On May 22, veterans and their allies launched a 40-day Fast for Gaza with two core demands: provide humanitarian supplies to Palestinians and stop sending weapons to the illegal state of Israel. A core group of fasters is holding a daily vigil in front of the US mission to the United Nations in New York City. They are joined by more than 400 solidarity fasters. Clearing the FOG speaks with two of the fasters and organizers, Kathy Kelly, board president of World Beyond War, and Mike Ferner, former national director of Veterans for Peace, about the fast, their experiences with supporting those who are targeted by wars, and the importance of continuing to oppose the genocide of Palestinians. Veterans And Allies Conduct 40-Day ‘Fast For Gaza’

New York, NY – Tomorrow, a coalition of military veterans, religious, and humanitarian organizations will begin a 40-day “Veterans & Allies Fast for Gaza,” with a news conference at 10:00 am ET, at the “Isaiah Wall” near the United Nations headquarters in New York City, moving to the U.S. Mission to the UN, where the fast will be conducted. The demands of the fast are 1) Full humanitarian aid to Gaza under UN authority and 2) No more U.S. weapons to Israel.  A representative number of people will fast from May 22 to June 30 in New York, with many others participating around the U.S. and beyond for as many days as they can. To date, 249 people have registered.
