Hundreds March Against Hate After KKK Appear

Hundreds of people marched from a cemetery in Hillsborough where enslaved people are buried into downtown to show a united front against racism after Ku Klux Klan members showed up in town last week. Marchers carried anti-racism signs, signs supporting immigrants, rainbow flags, or American flags. The rally featured Native American, black, and white speakers. When a “racism alert” text service for Hillsborough was announced, many in the crowd paused to punch the number into their phones. “We are united together,” Barrett Brown of the Alamance County NAACP told the crowd. “They can’t duck, they can’t dodge. They can’t do anything to keep us divided.” The Hate-Free Schools Coalition and Hillsborough Progressives Taking Action organized the march and rally.

Some of America’s most notorious racist riots happened 100 years ago this summer. Confronting a national epidemic of white mob violence, 1919 was a time when black people in the United States defended themselves, fought back, and demanded full citizenship through thousands of acts of courage, small and large, individual and collective. But pull a standard U.S. history textbook off the shelf and you’re unlikely to find more than a paragraph on the 1919 riots. What you do find downplays both racism and black resistance while distorting facts in a dangerous “both sides” framing. These textbooks render students stupid about white supremacy and bereft of examples from those who defied it. At this moment of revived racist backlash, all of us need to learn the lessons of 1919.

In testimony before Congress, FBI officials have hidden behind the First Amendment to defend their abysmal record on fighting white supremacist violence. That’s hogwash. FBI rules on domestic operations are tremendously lax (too lax in fact), and the agency and their Joint Terrorism Task Forces have repeatedly and continuously infiltrated and surveilled peace, environmental, racial justice, economic justice, animal rights and solidarity groups throughout the bureau’s 100 year history. In 2010, the DOJ Inspector General called out the FBI for launching domestic terror investigations against Greenpeace, PETA, and anti-war groups. More recently, the FBI sent paid informants to infiltrate the Standing Rock protest camp and Occupy Cleveland, and other left-leaning protests.

The Unite The Right Rally today, one year after the one in Charlottesville, can only be described as a complete flop. The racists were unable to fill a single train car and were dwarfed by police surrounding them and over ten thousand anti-racists, who gathered in various parts of Washington, DC. The Alt-Right racist movement has been exposed for what it is -- an unpopular, shrinking fringe movement that the national consensus finds despicable. In fact, counterprotesters outnumbered white nationalists by the hundreds at the DC rally — to the point that some counterprotesters left early because it was kind of boring.

Leesburg, VA (Aug. 12, 2018) - Loudoun residents and members of 350 Loudoun covered the Confederate statue on the courthouse lawn in Leesburg with a tarp this morning. The peaceful action was meant to protest the monument and call for its removal. It comes on the one year anniversary of white supremacist violence in Charlottesville that centered around a statue honoring Confederate general Robert E Lee. “The statue must be removed because it represents a shameful era in our history. Failing to remove it perpetuates the past,” said Natalie Pien, one of the protesters and a member of 350 Loudoun.

The white supremacist, Richard Spencer spoke at Michigan State University on Monday after defeating a vocal campaign against his appearance. The school denied Spencer a permit last year after a community outcry, but Spencer's group filed suit, leading to a court order for the two sides to enter mediation. The result was a deal in which Spencer spoke today while the school was on spring break. Protests were held outside the event. SPEAKER: They're fascists and they are not welcome here on Michigan State's campus. We don't believe they should have been allowed to speak. I just want to say, too, this is just a part of what's going on in the country.

Around the world, there will be protests against it calling for Britain to apologize for the damage it inflicted. Students from the West Bank and Gaza will send letters to the British government describing the negative impacts that the Balfour Declaration, and the Nakba in 1948, continue to have on their lives today. As Dan Freeman-Maloy describes, the Balfour Declaration is also relevant today because of the propaganda co-existing with it that justified white supremacy, racism and empire. British imperialists believed that democracy only applied to "civilized and conquering peoples," and that "Africans, Asians, Indigenous peoples the world over – all were ... 'subject races,' unfit for self-government."
