UN Security Council Reimposes Comprehensive International Sanctions On Iran

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) voted to reimpose severe and comprehensive international economic sanctions on Iran intended to exert maximum pressure on the country’s economy, on Friday, September 19, following pressure from the UK, France, and Germany (E3). With sanctions looming over the West Asian nation, European leaders suggested there may be a chance for a last-minute negotiated settlement. E3 wrote a letter to the UNSC in August demanding snapback sanctions against Iran by the end of this month in the absence of a negotiated deal on its nuclear program. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, however, claimed that the Europeans were reluctant to consider the latest plan Iran had presented to them and accused them of trying to find excuses to avoid a diplomatic solution to the issue.

Living While Brown In America

Walking through a Home Depot parking lot while being brown raises enough reasonable suspicion in an immigration agent’s mind to cause my detention for a citizenship check, as Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts and the Five Supremes recently ruled. The 6-3 decision gave agents wide latitude to conduct indiscriminate immigration stops of Latinos suspected of living in the U.S. illegally, even if we are citizens. Concurring with the court’s ruling, Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh wrote that ethnicity alone can’t be grounds for reasonable suspicion, but it can be a “relevant factor” when considered with a combination of other factors. But take it from someone who grew up in South Texas and has had interactions with Border Patrol agents throughout his life — a person’s ethnicity is often the only requisite for a citizenship check.

LA Jury Acquits Protester Despite Top Border Patrol Official’s Testimony

A protester was acquitted Wednesday of charges that he assaulted a federal agent during widespread protests against immigration crackdowns in Los Angeles, just hours after one of the faces of President Trump’s enforcement policies took the stand to testify against him. U.S. Border Patrol Sector Chief Gregory Bovino — the brash agent who led a phalanx of military personnel into MacArthur Park this summer — was called as a witness Wednesday in a federal misdemeanor assault case against Brayan Ramos-Brito, who was accused of striking a federal agent. Bovino, who flew in to testify from Chicago, the latest city targeted for an immigration enforcement surge, said he witnessed the alleged assault committed by Ramos-Brito in Paramount on June 7.

How The US Sells Wars The Intelligence Doesn’t Support

The United States is building up its military assets, sparking fears of another regime change attempt against Venezuela—and this one could be far more deadly than the others. Citing an influx of Venezuelan drugs into the U.S., the Trump administration is rapidly building up its military forces, encircling the South American nation, one which has been in Washington’s crosshairs for over a quarter of a century. MintPress News explores Trump’s extraordinary claims and assesses the history of U.S. efforts to overthrow the Venezuelan government. The Trump administration is once again setting its sights on Venezuela. In recent weeks, President Trump deployed additional naval and air assets to the Caribbean, including seven warships, a submarine, and an amphibious assault ship, designed for maritime invasions.

If You Don’t Want To Confront Oppression, Your Role As An Intellectual Is Pointless

At the grave of Berta Isabel Cáceres Flores (1971–2016) in La Esperanza, Honduras, where she was born and died, I watched a yellow butterfly flutter around a bougainvillea bush. It flew as if unconcerned, going from grave to grave in the quiet cemetery. Beside Berta’s grave is that of her brother, Carlos Alberto López Flores (1958–2004), a communist who studied at Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow and was a vital influence on the thinking of his younger sister. The other side of Berta’s grave remains empty. It awaits the body of Carlos and Berta’s mother María Austra Bertha Flores López – known as Mamá Berta – who buried two of her children.

White Power

Donald Trump and officials in his administration have dispensed with even the appearance of established niceties in their quest to realize a vision of making white people and his concept of power ascendant throughout this country and the world. White power and brute force are their priorities – and any other considerations and even common sense take a back seat. If farmers who voted for Trump can’t find workers because of his immigration crackdown, so be it. His animus towards undocumented people is so great that he shoved some of his supporters under the bus and into bankruptcy. Lest anyone forget, it was the very conservative Ronald Reagan who enacted an amnesty for undocumented people in order to ensure a plentiful labor force for agriculture and other industries that are dependent upon immigrant labor.

Israel’s Qatar Attack Rattles The Gulf

The Israeli attack on Qatar on Sept. 9 has undermined the very foundations of the security arrangement between the United States and the Gulf monarchies. Since the 1980’s Iran-Iraq war, Washington conditioned its military commitment to the region on Gulf rulers granting the U.S. greater access to their territories — even if that meant compromising sovereignty. In return, the Gulf countries expected U.S. protection against external threats. Rulers poured billions into constructing American military bases, often at their own expense, and tolerated the political risks of inviting foreign troops into their lands. Initially, Gulf regimes were reluctant to display such ties openly, fearing popular opposition, especially during the heyday of Arab nationalism.

UC Berkeley Hands Over Private Staff And Student Information For Trump’s ‘Antisemitism’ Probe

The University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) has provided the federal government with the private information of more than 150 students, staff, and faculty. The move comes in response to the Trump administration’s investigation into alleged campus antisemitism, which is widely viewed as a means to crack down on campus Palestine activism. The Daily Californian reports that the school’s Office of Legal Affairs sent emails to those impacted on September 4. “As part of its investigation, OCR required production of comprehensive documents, including files and reports related to alleged antisemitic incidents,” the email read.

Trump Targets CODEPINK After Public Confrontation

Activists from the anti-war group CODEPINK confronted US President Donald Trump and his cabinet at a restaurant in Washington, DC on September 9. The disruption made national headlines and (evidently) sent the Trump administration into a frenzy. At the restaurant on September 9, peace activists got surprisingly close to Trump and cabinet members including Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, shouting “Free DC, free Palestine, Trump is the Hitler of our time!” Trump appeared to react with visible frustration as he gestured for his security to remove the protesters, saying “Get them out of here.”

Independent Probe For United Nations Says Israel Commits Genocide

In a new report published against the backdrop of intensifying Israeli military operations in Gaza City, the U.N. Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel, urged Israel and all countries to fulfil their obligations under international law “to end the genocide” and punish those responsible. “The Commission finds that Israel is responsible for the commission of genocide in Gaza,” insisted Navi Pillay, Chair of the Commission. “It is clear that there is an intent to destroy the Palestinians in Gaza through acts that meet the criteria set forth in the Genocide Convention.”

Infiltration: A Cardinal Function Of The Zionist Movement

The Zionist movement creates and sustains the “Israel lobby” to extend its ideological and political reach, shaping both foreign and domestic policy in the countries where it operates. It provides material support for ethnic cleansing and genocide, funneling millions each year through charities that aid in land theft and war crimes. It grooms children and youth into ideological loyalists through a vast network of schools, synagogues, youth groups and settler recruitment programs, including Birthright tours, the Masa journey and the Lone Soldier Program. Beyond all this, the movement systematically dispatches its adherents into broader society as lifelong agents of Zionist ideology. This is not a metaphor. It is infiltration.

China Warns Of Retaliation As US Pushes 100% Tariffs

Last week, US President Donald Trump demanded that his European allies impose a 100% tariff against China and India for importing oil from Russia. He apparently promised the European envoy that he would match Europe and impose similar tariffs against both countries. Trump has accused China and India of funding the war in Ukraine by importing oil from Russia. This was confirmed by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Monday in an interview with Reuters. He claimed that his country will not impose more tariffs on China and India over Russian oil imports until the Europeans do it. In response, China reiterated that no amount of external pressure or coercion will make it compromise its “sovereignty, security and development interests” and warned that if its “legitimate rights and interests are harmed” in any way it will “resolutely take countermeasures to safeguard” them.

Trump Announces Second Summary Execution Of Venezuelans

US President Donald Trump announced on his social media platform, Truth Social, Monday, a second “kinetic strike” against a stalled small boat allegedly carrying illegal drugs from Venezuela. In the announcement, the US ruler acknowledged the summary execution of three unidentified male Venezuelan civilians. The statement coincided with the release of an extremely blurry video by the US secretary of war. The video shows a stalled boat displaying no signs of violence before being obliterated by an explosion. The video lacked the visual sharpness and information about the date or location necessary for a fair analysis of the incident, similar to the video from a first execution reported on September 2.

True, Or Fake News? ‘90% Of Nicaraguans Feel Spied Upon’

The “spied upon” headline from El Pais is unequivocal. The story, in the newspaper’s English-language edition, says that Nicaraguans live in “a climate of permanent surveillance” in which they distrust even their neighbors. Further, apparently harmless community meetings are really “a mechanism of social control” where they “feel watched.” El Pais sources a survey carried out “independently” by an organization called Hagamos Democracia (“Let’s Make Democracy”), based in Costa Rica. Its president, Jesús Tefel, says that people can’t “express opinions openly for fear of being betrayed.” El Pais’s conclusion is that Nicaraguans live under “constant surveillance and repression.”

What Trump’s Executive Order On 401(K)s Means For Workers

A new Trump executive order has opened the door for 401(K) holders to invest in private equity, cryptocurrency, and other alternative assets. Why did Trump make this decision? Is this a beneficial “public policy” for common people preparing for retirement? Gerald Epstein, a leading expert on finance and financial crises, warns that Trump’s executive order on retirement accounts not only comes with high risks, but the so-called alternative assets deliver, at best, average returns. Epstein is professor of economics and co-director of the Political Economy Research Institute at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. His latest book is Busting the Bankers’ Club: Finance for the Rest of Us.
