Beware Trump’s Ceasefire Without United Nations Action

As President Donald Trump surely intended, his “20-point Gaza plan” succeeded in upstaging calls by many other world leaders at the U.N. General Assembly for concrete, coordinated U.N.-led measures to force Israel to end its criminal genocide in Gaza and the illegal occupation of Palestine. Trump’s White House meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sept. 29 coincided with the last day of the annual meeting of the U.N. General Assembly in New York, where Trump had met with eight Arab and Muslim leaders at the U.N. and won their support for a proposed plan for Gaza. In a textbook bait-and-switch, Trump then allowed the Israelis to significantly alter his plan before he unveiled it to the world at his meeting with Netanyahu, but pretended it was the same plan that the leaders of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE and other countries had endorsed.

Yemen’s Houthis To ‘Monitor’ Israel Compliance With Gaza Ceasefire Deal

Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, the leader of Yemen’s Ansar Allah, said on Thursday that Yemen will be “monitoring” Israel’s compliance with the Gaza ceasefire deal, warning Yemeni support for the Palestinians in Gaza would continue if the deal isn’t implemented. “We must be at the highest levels of caution and readiness, and continue the massive popular momentum with the Palestinian people, until we determine whether the agreement will be achieved, or whether we will continue our path of support and assistance to the Palestinian people,” al-Houthi said, according to Yemen’s SABA news agency. “We will remain vigilant, prepared, and monitor the progress of the agreement. Will it lead to an end to the aggression on the Gaza Strip and the entry of aid, food, medicine, and humanitarian needs to the Palestinian people?"

Trump Rattles Markets With New 100 Percent Tariffs On Chinese Goods

US President Donald Trump announced new 100 percent tariffs on Chinese goods on 10 October and threatened to cancel his meeting with President Xi Jinping. Trump said the levies would take effect on 1 November, describing them as “retaliation” for what he called Beijing’s “extraordinarily aggressive” actions. “It is impossible to believe that China would have taken such an action, but they have, and the rest is History,” he wrote on social media. He added that the new measures would target “any and all critical software” exports, accusing China of holding the world “captive” through its dominance of rare earth minerals. “There is no way that China should be allowed to hold the World captive,” he said.

Judge Bars ICE Attacks On Journalists And Protesters While Hearing Lawsuit

United States District Judge Sara Ellis issued a temporary restraining order to prevent attacks by federal agents on journalists or non-violent protesters. She instructed agents to wear “visible identification” on their uniforms or helmets. Also, Ellis restricted the use of crowd control weapons on journalists, protesters, or clergy, including a prohibition against shooting individuals “to strike the head, neck, groin, spine, or female breast, or striking any person with a vehicle.” The order [PDF], which applies to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other agencies, will remain in force for two weeks while a court reviews a lawsuit alleging significant First Amendment violations.

Africa Will Be Free When The IMF Stops Colluding To Steal Its Wealth

In February 2025, Senegal’s Court of Auditors released a report that found ‘anomalies’ in the management of public finances between 2019 and 2024, during the presidency of Macky Sall (2012–2024). For instance, the court found that while Sall’s government had suggested that the budget deficit for 2023 was 4.9% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), it was in fact 12.3%. The court went to work on this reconstruction of public finances because of a very significant accusation made by Senegal’s new prime minister, Ousmane Sonko, at a press conference in Dakar in September 2024. What the auditors found, and what the International Monetary Fund (IMF) validated, was that the actual debt ratio in 2023 was 99.7% of GDP – not 74.7% – and that the deficit had been underestimated by 5.6% of GDP (in August 2025, the debt ratio was revised to 111% of GDP).

Israeli Occupation Continues Illegal Detention And Deportation Of Flotilla Volunteers

The Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) confirms that Israel continues to illegally imprison and abuse many international human rights defenders at Ktzi’ot Prison in the Naqab (Negev) desert. This follows the Israeli occupation’s illegal and violent attack and pirating of the FFC and Thousand Madleens to Gaza (TMTG) flotilla on October 8, 2025, 120 nautical miles (220 km) from Gaza in international waters, and the forcible transfer of nine vessels and 145 international volunteers from over 25 countries to Ashdod Port. Adalah attorneys continue to receive reports of aggressive and violent conduct by the Israeli forces during and following Israel’s unlawful interception of their vessels, as well as appalling detention conditions, including inadequate access to drinking water and in some instances, physical and verbal abuse. Hearings began without legal representation in a clear denial of access to legal counsel.

Joy And Trepidation In Gaza As Ceasefire Goes Into Effect

Celebrations have erupted in Gaza. People sing in the streets, families hug each other, and children dance — all smiling and joyfully expressing their happiness that a deal for a ceasefire, and hopefully an end to the genocide, has finally been announced. The agreement and the captives’ release were announced in the early morning hours in Palestine, and are only part of the first stage of U.S. President Trump’s plan. The agreement will see a ceasefire, the release of the remaining Israeli captives in Gaza, the release of a number of Palestinian prisoners, and the retreat of Israeli forces to an agreed-upon location. It is expected to be signed between Israel and Hamas on Thursday afternoon in Egypt and will immediately go into effect.

When Machado Wins The Nobel Peace Prize, ‘Peace’ Has Lost Its Meaning

When I saw the headline Maria Corina Machado wins the Peace Prize, I almost laughed at the absurdity. But I didn’t, because there’s nothing funny about rewarding someone whose politics have brought so much suffering. Anyone who knows what she stands for knows there’s nothing remotely peaceful about her politics. If this is what counts as “peace” in 2025, then the prize itself has lost every ounce of credibility. I’m Venezuelan-American, and I know exactly what Machado represents. She’s the smiling face of Washington’s regime-change machine, the polished spokesperson for sanctions, privatization, and foreign intervention dressed up as democracy. Machado’s politics are steeped in violence.

The Wall Street Journal Has Many Ways To Deny Genocide

As more and more scholars, and one rights group after another, confirm that Israel is carrying out a genocide in Gaza, it’s becoming ever more obvious that those who deny the genocide are the intellectual and moral equivalents of people who deny other genocides, such as the ones inflicted on the Indigenous peoples of the Americas, or the Holocaust, or the Armenian Genocide. Yet the Wall Street Journal persists in running genocide denial. Looking at how the paper does so enables us to not only refute their falsehoods, but also to gain insight into the tactics Gaza genocide denialists, and genocide deniers in general, employ.

Will The United States Attack Venezuela?

Spoiler alert – it already has. This is not a glib answer but a comment on the nature of the conflict. The US mission to wrench Venezuela’s Bolivarian Revolution out from its roots has a quarter-century pedigree. Stick around to the end of the article for an assessment of the likelihood of an overt military attack inside Venezuela. But first a little historical context. In 2002, a US-backed military coup temporarily ousted Hugo Chávez. A mere 47 hours later, the people of Venezuela spontaneously arose and returned their rightfully elected president. Washington has persistently interfered in the internal affairs of Venezuela, pouring millions of dollars to rig elections. Yet, the perpetually divided and unpopular US-fostered opposition is more isolated and discredited than ever.

Following Mass Protests, Trump Deploys National Guard To Chicago

After months of threats from the Trump administration, on October 8, hundreds of National Guard troops arrived in Chicago from Texas and Illinois. The US Northern Command announced on October 8 that around 200 soldiers from the Texas National Guard and around 300 from the Illinois National Guard had arrived in the greater Chicago area. Troops are set to “protect” ICE and other federal agents, as well as federal property, according to the Northern Command. The deployment of troops comes after waves of mass protest against US President Donald Trump’s ramped up immigration enforcement operation – labeled as “Operation Midway Blitz.”

‘Left’ Except For Haiti

At the recent United Nations General Assembly meeting, Gustavo Petro gave an impassioned speech on behalf of the Palestinian people. It was quite rightly held up as an example of leadership by a head of state, who spoke out forthrightly against a genocide and amplified calls for an international task force under a Uniting for Peace resolution which would prevent permanent Security Council members like the United States from using their status to veto any actions. Petro rose in international esteem after the Trump administration revoked his visa and when he returned to Colombia he expelled Israeli embassy staff after two Colombians were amongst those captured and detained on the Smud freedom flotilla to Gaza.

Report: US Spent Over $30B Backing Israel, Regional Wars In Two Years

The U.S. has spent over $30 billion supporting the Israeli military and conducting war across the Middle East over the first two years of Israel’s genocide in Gaza — a genocide only made possible by the U.S.’s financial support, a new report concludes. Brown University’s Costs of War project released a series of reports on the second anniversary of the October 7, 2023 attack, finding that the U.S. has sent at least $21.7 billion in military aid to Israel between October 2023 and September 2025. This record-breaking amount of aid is just the “tip of the iceberg,” with replenishments like Israel’s access to U.S. weapons stockpiles in the Middle East likely not included in publicly reported totals.

Hamas, Israel Agree To First Phase Of Gaza Ceasefire Under Trump Plan

The newly announced ceasefire agreement, which was reached by mediators overnight, is set to take effect in Gaza on 9 October. Phase one of US President Donald Trump’s 20-point plan will begin in the coming hours and days. According to Israel’s Channel 14, the signing of the agreement will be followed by Israeli cabinet and government meetings to ratify the deal. The Israeli army will then carry out its first withdrawal from Gaza’s population centers, in line with the agreement’s withdrawal map. Twenty living Israeli captives will be released following 72 hours. In exchange, Tel Aviv is required to release 250 prisoners serving life sentences and 1,700 Palestinians detained from Gaza since 7 October 2023.

Tiktok, Oracle, And Israel: The New Geopolitics Of Algorithms

Launched in 2017 by the private Chinese company ByteDance, TikTok quickly became one of the most important social networks on the planet. By early 2025, it had 1.6 billion active users, more than half of them outside China, of whom an estimated 170 million are North American; 1 in 5 people in the US get their news from this network, 4 in 10 among the 18-29 age group. Today, it is the fastest-growing platform among the younger segments of the global population. The US government has waged a long battle to force ByteDance to sell the US branch of TikTok to a group of “domestic” capitalists, citing national security concerns and threatening to ban the platform in the US if the deal did not go through.
