Western Narratives On War And Unrest In Syria

In March 2025, Syria witnessed horrific sectarian massacres by government-backed forces targeting Alawites in the country’s northwest coastal regions. Since the violent takeover of the Syrian government by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) in November/December 2024, nearly 8,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed. HTS, far from being an independent actor, functions as a proxy force advancing the geopolitical interests of the United States, Israel, and their allies, whose primary goal is to destabilize the region and maintain control over its resources. Damascus governor Maher Marwan indicates that HTS wants peace with Israel, while Israel’s destruction of Syria’s armed forces and anti-air defenses after HTS’s takeover of Damascus has elicited seemingly no criticism, let alone an armed response from Syria’s new rulers.

Ex-UN Special Rapporteur: Francesca Albanese Deserves Nobel Prize

The day after Donald Trump welcomed indicted war criminal Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the United States for the third time in less than six months, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio imposed sanctions against UN Special Rapporteur on Occupied Palestine Francesca Albanese for her clear-eyed critiques of Israel’s genocide. In a July 9 press statement, Rubio charged that Albanese “has directly engaged with the International Criminal Court (ICC) in efforts to investigate, arrest, detain, or prosecute nationals of the United States or Israel, without the consent of those two countries.”

Concentration Camps Are Back; Why Does That Not Bother Anyone?

Israel has soft-launched its concentration camp in Rafah, and Donald Trump has hard-launched Alligator Alcatraz, while other countries look the other way. Israel has made it clear that anyone who does not make their way to the new concentration camp, on what used to be Rafah city, will become a legitimate target for elimination. Just to be clear, though. At no point so far has Israel needed a legitimate justification for eliminating anyone. They have done what they want, to whom they want, from the start. Israel could not have made their intentions clearer – ethnic cleansing. And still, Western Government are supporting it – providing weapons and support and pretending they don’t see the long list of war crimes because little Netanyahu might throw a temper tantrum.

Ukraine’s Corporate Carve-Up Collapses?

On July 5th, Bloomberg reported that a BlackRock-administered multibillion-dollar fund for Kiev’s reconstruction, due to be unveiled at a dedicated Ukraine Recovery Conference in Rome July 10th/11th, had been placed on hold at the start of 2025 “due to a lack of interest” among institutional, private, and state financiers. The summit is over, lack of investor enthusiasm persists, and “the project’s future is now uncertain.” It’s just the latest confirmation the West’s long-running mission to carve up Ukraine for profit verges on total disintegration. BlackRock’s Ukraine Development Fund has been in the works since May 2023. It was originally envisaged as one of the most ambitious public-private finance collaborations in history, which would rival Washington’s Marshall Plan that rebuilt – and heavily indebted – Western Europe in World War II’s wake.

Foreign Military Bases And Resistance To Them Are Spreading

A new report by World BEYOND War finds that military bases used by foreign militaries are growing in number, as are public protests and advocacy against those bases. Of 1,247 foreign military bases in the world, 877 of them, by latest count, are U.S. bases outside of the United States. Eighteen other nations, combined, have 370 bases outside their borders. While U.S. bases are in 95 foreign countries all over the globe and virtually encircling the borders of Russia and China, the nation with the second-most foreign bases, Türkiye, has them all near Türkiye, with the exception of one base in Somalia, and the majority of them in Syria and Iraq where Türkiye has been waging wars.

America’s 25-Year Tax Cutting And Fiscal Train Wreck

On July 4, the US Congress passed Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act—or BBB for short. The mainstream media and economists have mostly been reporting the details of the tax cuts contained in the bill—that is, which taxes got cut, how much accrued to businesses and the wealthy as opposed to the rest of us, what the impact is on GDP, and maybe even on government deficits and debt. All interesting facts. But not the most important. They purposely ignore the cuts in historical perspective and the bigger picture they represent.

On CNN, Los Angeles’ ICE Protesters Were Seen And Not Heard

A FAIR study found that CNN’s primetime coverage of the Los Angeles anti-ICE protests in early June rarely included the voices of the protesters themselves. Instead, the network’s sources were overwhelmingly current and former government and law enforcement officials. The resulting coverage rarely took issue with Trump’s desire to silence the people who were defending their undocumented neighbors—but mainly debated his decision to deploy the California National Guard to do so.

Chris Hedges: Trump, Epstein And The Deep State

The refusal by the Trump administration to release the files and videos amassed during investigations into the activities of the pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, should put to rest the absurd idea, embraced by Trump supporters and gullible liberals, that Trump will dismantle the Deep State. Trump is part of, and has long been part of, the repugnant cabal of politicians – Democrat and Republican – billionaires and celebrities who look at us, and often underage girls and boys, as commodities to exploit for profit or pleasure. The list of those who were in Epstein’s orbit is a who’s who of the rich and famous. They include not only Trump, but Bill Clinton, who allegedly took a trip to Thailand with Epstein, Prince Andrew, Bill Gates, hedge fund billionaire Glenn Dubin, former New Mexico governor Bill Richardson, former Secretary of the Treasury and former president of Harvard University Larry Summers, cognitive psychologist and author Stephen Pinker, Alan Dershowitz, billionaire and Victoria’s Secret CEO Leslie Wexner, the former Barclays banker Jes Staley, former Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak, the magician David Copperfield, actor Kevin Spacey, former CIA director Bill Burns, real estate mogul Mort Zuckerman, former Maine senator George Mitchell and disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, who reveled in Epstein’s perpetual Bacchanalia.

Gaza Ceasefire Talks Collapse Over Israel’s Occupation Demands

Indirect negotiations between Hamas and Israeli officials hit a deadlock in Doha, as Palestinian and Israeli sources say the talks are faltering over the scope of the proposed Israeli military withdrawal from Gaza. The discussions are based on a US-backed framework for a 60-day ceasefire and the phased release of Israeli captives, but key issues remain unresolved. Hamas reportedly rejected Israeli-proposed maps that would leave 40 to 45 percent of the territory under occupation, including all of southern Rafah as well as parts of northern and eastern Gaza.

Amid Deadly Floods, Lawmakers Left Gap In Warning System

Despite the rising threat of climate disasters like last week’s deadly flash flood in Texas, the vast majority of America’s waterways are still not being monitored by water level gauges that help identify impending disasters. Lawmakers have long declined to fully fund the federal government’s program supporting a nationwide flood warning system, according to government documents reviewed by The Lever.  While demanding billions of dollars of new tax cuts in the months before the Texas disaster, President Donald Trump’s administration proposed to nearly halve the budget of the federal agency overseeing a federal flood warning network — and proposed a 22 percent cut to the specific budget line funding that system.

How Wall Street’s Grip On School Finance Deepens Inequality

Public school districts are bracing for cuts after the Trump administration’s decision to withhold $6.8 billion of education funding. But the financial squeeze is not new. For years, private finance has quietly shaped public education budgets. Schools have become deeply reliant on Wall Street debt to finance everything from basic infrastructure and classroom upgrades to day-to-day operations. The deeper schools fall into debt, the more they are bound by a set of financial rules that prioritize investors over students and teachers. School districts turn to debt financing when they face costs that their immediate budgets cannot cover.

Philosophy Professor Reportedly Assaulted And Abducted By ICE

Jonathan Caravello, a lecturer in philosophy at California State University Channel Islands, was reportedly “piled on by multiple agents all at once” as “he tried to help a man in a wheelchair” who was having difficulty moving after Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents threw canisters of tear gas at them and their fellow protestors, with, according to witnesses, “one canister landing under the wheelchair.” ICE, with the help of National Guard members, was conducting a raid at Glass House Farms this past Thursday. According to the Los Angeles Times, the Central Coast Alliance United for a Sustainable Economy (CAUSE) learned of the raids, spread the word, and protestors and others arrived on the scene.

State Power, Corporate Power Or ‘Little Powers’?

As I write, New Zealand is also facing the biggest sucker of electrical energy ever created – digital data storage and delivery. This was bad enough when it was being sent directly to electricity-powered digital ‘appliances’ (phones, personal and commercial computers, screens of all kinds),9) but in 2023 a new and extremely energy-intensive function was introduced – machine learning, commonly known as AI. It is extremely difficult to get accurate data on the contribution of different industries to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, as each one has an obvious interest in disguising how big their contribution is.

Israel Unveils A Concentration Camp In Southern Gaza

It is said that no news is good news. But when the cone of silence is dropped over meetings between U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, it is prudent to be apprehensive about what we don’t know. Before Netanyahu’s arrival in Washington, Trump had indicated that he expected their conversations to be focused almost exclusively on ending the Gaza “war.” The sickening euphemism aside, the fact that neither Trump nor Netanyahu are eager to disclose the contents of their meetings opens a wide range of possibilities.  The optimistic view is that Netanyahu is attempting to find a way to accommodate the President’s stated desire to end the genocide in Gaza without causing a rupture in his governing coalition.

The Europeans And The United States Against Russia

Dmitri Trenin on the intermediate results of the "special diplomatic operation" The war will not end in 2025. It will not end after the end of hostilities in Ukraine. We need to realize that the current conflict is not about Ukraine as such. This is a proxy (so far) war of the West against Russia. And this confrontation itself is part of an ongoing world war, in which the West is fighting to maintain world hegemony. This will be a long war, and the United States, with or without Trump, will remain our adversary. At stake for us in this struggle is not the status of Ukraine, but the existence of Russia.
