As thousands of people took to the streets of Los Angeles to defend their communities against state-sanctioned abductions of immigrants this June, the Senate Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism (SSCC) put three organizations—Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL), Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA), and the independent political organization Unión del Barrio (UdB)—on notice. Led by Missouri Senator Josh Hawley, the SSCC normally oversees anti-terrorism enforcement and policy, and directs the work of the Drug Enforcement Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the Justice Department Criminal Division.

The agriculture sector is on edge like never before. With ICE officers chasing undocumented immigrants through fields and barging into meatpacking plants, workers are spooked. Even before the farm raids, workforce shortages and economic uncertainty rankled the industry. Now, as harvest season arrives for many crops, concerns are growing that there may not be enough workers out there to feed the country. To Dolores Huerta, it’s an unprecedented problem caused squarely by the Trump administration. “It’s an atrocity, what they’ve been doing to the immigrant community,” Huerta said in an interview with POLITICO Magazine.

Charges Dropped Against Anti-ICE Protester Alejandro Orellana

Los Angeles, CA – On July 29, the federal government announced the conspiracy charges against Chicano activist Alejandro Orellana were dropped – a victory for Centro CSO and all freedom fighters in the immigrant rights movement fighting against ICE terror! On June 12, the FBI, National Guard, and the East LA Sheriff station raided Orellana’s home. They arrested Orellana, destroyed his family home, and locked him up at the Metropolitan Detention Center that has been the site of many anti-deportation protests. The Justice Department charged him with conspiracy to commit civil disorder and aiding and abetting civil disorder, which could have resulted in up to five years in prison for Orellana.

Farmworkers Organize Three-Day Strike In California

At 10:20 a.m. on July 10, some 500 community supporters responded to a Rapid Response Hotline alert by UndocuFund announcing that armored vehicles were heading toward migrant farmworkers at two southern California Glass House farms in Camarillo and Carpinteria, California. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and members of the National Guard descended on the farms. They used weapons and threats of deportation to terrorize the farmworkers — who work seven days a week raising tomatoes, cucumbers and legal cannabis — and their families. Supporters were met with tear gas as they threw rocks and faced off against the troops.

This week, California farmworkers protesting the recent death of 57-year-old Jaime Alanís García after he broke his neck fleeing militarized ICE agents in Ventura County on July 10, chose to observe the “Huelga para la dignidad,” or “Strike for Dignity.” Most, however, did not. And the reason they did not has everything to do with Trump administration policies designed to perpetuate an unrepresented class of workers in this country consigned to a state of virtual slavery. The Trump-directed raids on poor California farmworkers makes zero economic sense when you consider the current president’s supporters in agribusiness simply cannot do without the cheap, exploitable labor that makes their profits possible.

If you live in a national forest in California, odds are pretty high that at some point or another you’ve been ordered to evacuate. In Indian Valley, for the first twelve days, many of our residents did indeed evacuate, but a significant number stayed behind. Some residents had livestock to look after and often no solid indication of where they could take their animals that wouldn’t also need to be evacuated soon. With so many towns evacuating at once, some didn’t want to stay in evacuation shelters where the lights would be on all day and night and the likelihood of catching COVID was high.

Philosophy Professor Reportedly Assaulted And Abducted By ICE

Jonathan Caravello, a lecturer in philosophy at California State University Channel Islands, was reportedly “piled on by multiple agents all at once” as “he tried to help a man in a wheelchair” who was having difficulty moving after Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents threw canisters of tear gas at them and their fellow protestors, with, according to witnesses, “one canister landing under the wheelchair.” ICE, with the help of National Guard members, was conducting a raid at Glass House Farms this past Thursday. According to the Los Angeles Times, the Central Coast Alliance United for a Sustainable Economy (CAUSE) learned of the raids, spread the word, and protestors and others arrived on the scene.

As ICE Raids Intensify, Trained Volunteers Patrol LA Streets

The day after families across the country gathered to celebrate Father’s Day, Francisco Romero huddled at dawn with 10 volunteers in a South Los Angeles parking lot. The group was preparing to patrol the neighborhood for signs of Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity. There was a heaviness in the atmosphere, despite the comradery and smiles. During the group huddle, some reflected on the difficulty celebrating Father’s Day while families across the city were being separated by ICE. Another volunteer mentioned viral videos from the prior weekend showing apparent ICE presence in the nearby city of Bell, including “snatch and grabs,” in which unmarked vehicles surrounded pedestrians suspected of being undocumented and ICE officers pulled them inside.

FBI Ambushes Immigrant Rights Activist Verita Topete In Los Angeles

Los Angeles, CA – On Thursday, June 26, Verita Topete, an immigrant rights activist with Centro CSO, was ambushed by the FBI while walking her dog at a park. Federal agents aggressively approached her to serve a warrant and force her to give them her phone. Topete has been very actively and publicly fighting back against the ICE raids that have terrorized Los Angeles and surrounding cities since the raids began spreading on June 6. Topete helped lead protests and marches against deportations and demanding legalization for all. She has led barrio walks to inform people of their rights and has helped individuals defend themselves from being kidnapped by ICE and collaborating agencies.

Cynthia Gonzalez, vice mayor of Cudahy, California, wants to know where LA’s street gangs are: “You guys are always tagging everything up, claiming [the] hood, and now that your hood’s being invaded by the biggest gang there is, there ain’t a peep out of you …. We’re out there fighting our turf, protecting our turf, protecting our people and, like, where you at?” By “the biggest gang there is,” of course, she means US Immigrations and Customs Enforcement and its co-conspirators in the occupation of Greater Los Angeles. A few miles away in Huntington Park, mayor Arturo Flores has instructed his city’s chapter of the Blue Line Gang to “begin verifying the identities and authority” of masked marauders attempting to abduct alleged immigrants on his city’s streets.

Protesters And Federal Agents Face Off After Possible Immigration Raid

In Maywood, AIR7 was flying over the area when federal agents deployed some kind of tear gas or smoke bombs on a small crowd of protesters. The crowd quickly dissipated in the chaos, with a lot of people yelling. Things became aggressive after the gas or smoke was deployed. One protester was seen kicking it back toward the federal agents. Video shows multiple SUVs, seemingly belonging to federal agents, stopped on Slauson Avenue near Alamo Avenue, about a block away from where the gas or smoke was deployed. Just moments before that, a protest on Atlantic Avenue in the City of Bell got heated. AIR7 video shows a group of about 100 people who showed up after an immigration operation in the area.

We’ve seen that federal overreach in Los Angeles precipitated massive collective action, but equally important is how Mayor Bass and municipal governments across the country absorb this energy to build more democratically resilient cities. At home and abroad we’ve seen this before — when protests are framed as security threats, when military force is used to override local authority, and when federal funding is used to intimidate. And, we have also seen a wellspring of tools to help cities win against contemporary authoritarian tactics. During my time as a democracy expert overseas, I saw a range of strategies used by civil society and governments to resist authoritarian backsliding. From them, we should take inspiration.

Federal Agents Thought They Could Stay At LA-Area Hotels

It started as an “ICE sighting” on the morning of June 8. Someone had sent in a photo of federal immigration vehicles parked at the AC Hotel in Pasadena that circulated in rapid response group chats and on social media. The community members, including day labor and faith-based organizers who first rushed to the hotel, found most of the workers had left out of fear. And those who remained were “pretty upset” that federal agents were asking people about their immigration status “in an aggressive way,” said Jose Madera, the director of the Pasadena Community Job Center, a day laborer center.

If you believe President Trump, you’d think Los Angeles is in ruins. In a speech to the military at Fort Bragg, he referred to recent protests against immigration raids as “a foreign invasion” wielding Molotov cocktails and “concrete bombs” to reduce the City of Angels to “a trash heap with entire neighborhoods under the control of transnational gangs.” Trump used this narrative to justify deploying 2,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines to Los Angeles to “liberate Los Angeles.” Early footage of the protests, especially from Fox News, seemed to support Trump’s summary of the situation. Images of burning cars, graffiti-covered federal buildings, protesters throwing bottles at authorities, and looters breaking into a convenience store went viral online.

The Left Must Defend PSL And All Of Those Facing State Repression

To the surprise of perhaps no one, the tragedy of McCarthyism is being played out yet again as farce by the unimaginative buffoons running the U.S. congress. On Wednesday, June 11, The U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Crime and Counter-Terrorism, chaired by Republican Josh Hawley, sent what appears to be a slightly modified form letter to the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL) and several other organizations. In the letters, Hawley accuses these groups of fomenting civil unrest and demands that they immediately “cease and desist any further involvement” in the ongoing protests in Los Angeles. The letters also provided a bullet-point list demanding that the groups preserve records going back to November of 2024, including internal communications, emails, and text messages, suggesting that the groups may be formally investigated by the Senate in the near future.
