US Political Warfare Explodes Over Trump And Ukraine

The Trump White House came under renewed fire this week from Democratic Party opponents and the bulk of the corporate media after it was revealed that Trump had discussed with his Ukrainian counterpart an investigation into former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter over the younger Biden’s business activities in Ukraine. The discussion, which took place during a July 25 phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, was a blatant effort by Trump to enlist the support of a foreign government in gathering dirt on a Democratic presidential candidate reportedly viewed in the White House as Trump’s most dangerous opponent.

Netanyahu Lost Israeli Vote, But Palestinians Were Bound To Lose Whoever Won

Vladimir Lenin is said to have opined that the only thing certain about British elections is who is going to lose. He meant the British working class, at a time when they were effectively unrepresented in the political system. Equally, whatever the outcome of the Israeli elections, the Palestinians will be the big losers. According to preliminary results, Netanyahu has lost his majority of course – having failing to reach the magic number of 61 seats in the Knesset. But his opponents – the Palestinians living under siege in Gaza, under occupation in the West Bank, or under annexation in East Jerusalem

A Hundred Minutes In Jail With Lula

The former president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, imprisoned in the city of Curitiba, in the south of the country, is only allowed two visits per week. One hour. On Thursday afternoons, from four to five. We have to wait our turn. And the list of those who want to see him is long… But today, September 12, it’s time for Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, and me. Lula is in prison, serving a sentence of 12 years and 1 month “for passive corruption and money laundering”, but he has not been definitively convicted (he can still appeal) and above all, his accusers have not been able to prove his guilt.

Brazil: Temer Admits Impeachment Of Dilma Rousseff Was A Coup

Brazil's former President Michel Temer acknowledged that the impeachment of former president Dilma Rousseff, Worker's Party leader, was indeed a coup d'etat. During a TV interview watched by millions on Monday, the man who ruled Brazil from Aug. 2016 to Dec. 2019 stated that he never supported the "coup" which led to the impeachment of Rousseff, a leftist economist who held the Presidency from 2011 until her removal. "I never supported or committed to the coup," Temer confessed and added that he tried to prevent the political trial against Dilma.

The Other Americans: Colombia’s Fragile Peace In Splinters

The renewal of armed struggle follows neglect of the peace process from the far right. “[President] Duque is taking advantage of the discourse of Donald Trump to put back in place repressive politics,” a human rights defender says. Early in the morning on August 29, a video appeared on Youtube in which Iván Márquez and Jesús Santrich, of the rebel group the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), each dressed in army fatigues and surrounded by armed men, announced that they were renewing their armed struggle against the Colombian government.

What Does Bolton’s Ouster Mean To Victims Of US Imperial Aggression?

Donald Trump, the highly unpredictable white supremacist blowhard, has unceremoniously fired John Bolton, the totally predictable white supremacist ideologue who became national security advisor 17 months ago. Every sane person on the planet should be glad to see Bolton go. As libertarian Republican Sen. Rand Paul put it: “The threat of war worldwide goes down exponentially with John Bolton out of the White House. I think his advocacy for regime change around the world is a naïve worldview, and I think that the world will be a much better place with new advisers to the president.”

Pepe Escobar Interviews Lula da Silva

In a wide-ranging, two-hour-plus, exclusive interview from a prison room in Curitiba in southern Brazil, former Brazilian president Luis Inacio Lula da Silva re-emerged for the first time, after more than 500 days in jail, and sent a clear message to the world. Amid the 24/7 media frenzy of scripted sound bites and “fake news”, it’s virtually impossible to find a present or former head of state anywhere, in a conversation with journalists, willing to speak deep from his soul, to comment on all current political developments and relish telling stories about the corridors of power. And all that while still in prison.

Democrats Oppose Child Detention On The Border– And Jewish Activists Call For The Same Stance On Palestine

Massachusetts Rep. Stephen Lynch recently held a town hall meeting where he criticized the conditions along the southern border and talked about his tour of ICE and border patrol facilities in El Paso. “I have to be honest though, I have never seen a situation where the families are separated,” Lynch told the crowd. “That is never the practice of the host country. I do not believe it is necessary in our situation, either…Detaining children, period, is wrong.”

North Carolina Court Strikes Down State Legislative Map As Unconstitutional Gerrymander

(Reuters) - A North Carolina court on Tuesday struck down the Republican-drawn state legislative map as an illegal partisan gerrymander and gave lawmakers two weeks to enact new district lines for next year’s elections. A three-judge panel in Wake County Superior Court said the state Senate and state House district lines discriminated against Democratic voters in violation of the state constitution’s free elections, equal protection and free speech clauses. The decision is a victory for election reform advocates considering legal challenges to partisan gerrymandering in state courts despite a U.S. Supreme Court ruling earlier this year blocking such cases in federal courts.

Tlingit Carvers Create ‘Shaming Totem’ Of Trump And Alaska Governor Dunleavy

The pole supports the effort to recall Dunleavy, who would rather balance the state budget by cutting benefits to the poor than reduce a tax credit to big oil companies. Did the Tlingit “shaming” totem pole featuring images of President Trump and Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy cause the governor to restore most of the nearly half a billion dollars he cut from the state budget? Well, it didn’t hurt. The 11-and-a-half foot red cedar pole arrived in the state capital of Juneau from where it was carved in Sitka just in time for the kickoff of the Recall Dunleavy signature drive on August 1.

From Protest To Power

August 1964, fifty-five years ago, the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party presented itself to the national Democratic Party Convention seeking to be seated as the official party from that state. The predominantly black delegation wanted to deny seating to the all-white “regulars” who had earlier in the year denied Mississippi African-Americans the right to participate in precinct, county, congressional district and statewide meetings that nominated these delegates. MFDP presented itself to the Credentials Committee at which a decision would be made to seat one-or-another, or a mixed, body of delegates. MFDP and its allies proposed rejecting the “regulars”. It is likely that a Credentials Committee offer for a 50/50 delegate split would have been accepted by MFDP, in part because its members knew this policy would lead to a walk-out by the regulars.

Black Alliance For Peace Calls On Public To Demand That All Elected Officials Address Issues Of War, Militarism And U.S. Intervention

The Black Alliance for Peace (BAP) believes that along with the issue of climate change, the interlocking issues of war, militarism and normalized, illegal U.S. interventionism represent the main existential threats to global humanity. However, both mainstream elite political parties and the corporate media continue to minimize the impacts of morally indefensible and lawless interventions by the U.S. state, as well as the militarization of police forces nationwide and the obscene theft of public resources in the form of the Pentagon’s annual budget.

Lula Tells The World He’s “Back In The Game” From Jail.

In a wide-ranging, two-hour, world exclusive interview out of a prison room at the Federal Police building in Curitiba, southern Brazil, former president Luis Inacio Lula da Silva not only made the case to global public opinion for his innocence in the whole Car Wash corruption saga, confirmed by the bombshell leaks revealed by The Intercept, but also repositioned himself to resume his status as a global leader. Arguably sooner rather than later – depending on a fateful, upcoming decision by the Brazilian Supreme Court, for which Justice is not exactly blind.

Brexit Protest: Police Guard Downing St Gates As Hundreds Chant ‘No One Voted For Boris’

Boris Johnson’s plan to suspend Parliament in order to force through a no deal Brexit by October 31 has been confirmed by the Queen’s Privy Council. The move has been met with backlash, with members of the public taking to the streets in London and Manchester to protest. One video shows hundreds of protestors chanting “no one voted for Boris”, while holding up EU and UK flag. Police officers can also be seen lining the gates outside Downing Street.

The Curse Of Moral Purity

The continued inability of America’s liberal democratic establishment to address the ills besetting the country—climate change, unregulated global capitalism, mounting social inequality, a bloated military, endless foreign wars, out-of-control deficits and gun violence—means the inevitable snuffing out of our anemic democracy. Overwhelmed by the multiple crises, the liberal elites have jettisoned genuine political life and retreated into self-defeating moral crusades in a vain and futile attempt to deflect attention away from the looming social, political, economic and environmental catastrophes.
