South Africa Urgently Appeals To ICJ On Gaza Famine

South Africa on Wednesday filed an urgent request with the International Court of Justice for the indication of additional provisional measures and the modification of the court’s order of 26 January 2024 and decision of 16 February 2024 in the case concerning Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip (South Africa v. Israel), according to the ICJ in a March 6 press statement. In Its Request, South Africa States That It Is “compelled to return to the Court in light of the new facts and changes in the situation in Gaza — particularly the situation of widespread starvation — brought about by the continuing egregious breaches of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide . . . by the State of Israel . . .

Colombian President Suspending Military Material From Israel

The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, announced on Thursday the suspension of the purchase of war material from Israel in response to the attack that occurred that same day during the distribution of food in the Gaza Strip, which left more than 100 Palestinians dead. Both countries have been arms partners for more than three decades. In the 90s, Colombia bought 24 Kfir fighter jets from Israel, which are already about to reach their useful life, so the Government is looking for a way to replace them, although it still needs spare parts and services from the air industry of Israel for the maintenance of the old aircraft.

‘Operation Al-Aqsa Flood’ Day 152: Little Prospect Of Breakthrough In Ceasefire Talks

Israeli authorities turned back 14 trucks carrying humanitarian aid to northern Gaza on Tuesday. This prompted the World Food Program (WFP) to resort to airdropping the aid with the help of the Jordanian Air Force, delivering aid to 20,000 people in northern Gaza. “WFP is determined to do whatever it takes to reach people in need. But to avert famine, we must have access by road,” the organization wrote on X. Aid convoys driving on Salah al-Din Street to northern Gaza have had to stop at an Israeli military checkpoint in Wadi Gaza, which splits the enclave into northern and southern territories.

At Every Turn, US Politicians Hounded For Their Support For Israel

Incumbent US President Joe Biden has had to modify his entire campaign strategy in order to avoid frequent disruptions of campaign events by pro-Palestinian protesters. Lawmakers, from famous progressive Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to ultra-conservative Andrew Ogles (who declared “kill them all” to a protester’s question about the murder of Palestinian children) have been equally hounded by the Palestine solidarity movement for not calling for an end to Israeli genocide in Gaza.

‘Operation Al-Aqsa Flood’ Day 151: Israel ‘Campaigns’ To End UNRWA

Israeli forces shot at Palestinians in north Gaza as they waited for aid trucks to arrive, killing and injuring several people. Such an incident has been repeated a few times since last week when Israel killed more than 100 Palestinians seeking food and water, in what is now known as the “flour massacre.” Al-Jazeera’s correspondent, Anas al-Sharif, was with the Palestinian crowd on Monday night, waiting in the dark and running in a destroyed, dusty road behind international aid trucks. However, when vehicles arrived at north Gaza’s Kuwaiti roundabout, Palestinians were scattered, running in different directions, fleeing Israeli bullets.

‘Operation Al-Aqsa Flood’ Day 150: Israel Is ‘Engineering Famine’ In Gaza

Thousands of families in the Gaza Strip are barely finding enough food to cook a meal for their children as Israel’s military aggression and aid blockade continue for the 150th day. At least a quarter of Gaza’s population is just a step away from famine, with already reported deaths of babies and children in homes and hospitals. Prices of the little fruits and vegetables available on the market have soared, and non-essential products such as coffee have skyrocketed, with one kilogram sold at $100 (360 shekels). The most expensive cup of coffee is now to be found, not in Paris or the Maldives, but in Gaza, according to a Palestinian on TikTok who invited two of his friends over coffee to thank them for standing beside him as his injured leg healed.

First Western Leader Referred To ICC As ‘Accessory To Genocide In Gaza’

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is one of several Western leaders who have provided political and material support of the Israeli government and military over the past five months as their bombardment of Gaza has killed more than 30,000 people, but on Monday he became the first to be referred to the International Criminal Court for being an "accessory to genocide." More than 100 lawyers supported the referral under Article 15 of the Rome Statute, arguing that Albanese, a member of the Labor Party, as well as members of his Cabinet and of Parliament, have provided Israel with "rhetorical support in their public statements, their press conferences, their speeches" as well as material assistance, as attorney Sheryn Omeri told ABC's "News Breakfast."

The Remarkable Decline In The Global North’s Leadership

A group of young people in Paris are enjoying a drink in a café on an unseasonably warm evening. The conversation drifts into politics, but—as one young woman says—“Let’s not talk about France.” The others nod their assent. They focus on the US presidential election, a slight bit of Gallic arrogance at play as they mock the near certainty that the main candidates will be President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. Biden is 81 years old and Trump is 77. A Special Counsel in the United States has called Biden an “elderly man with a poor memory,” hardly the words required to inspire confidence in the president.

Biden’s Mixed Messages On Gaza Aren’t Fooling Veterans

President Biden added to the confusion over U.S. policy when, during his press conference announcing the airdrop, he twice said the aid was going to “Ukraine.” His confusing Gaza with Ukraine is understandable given that he is pushing for a huge funding bill that would send $61 billion to keep the Ukraine war going, while sending an additional $14 billion in military aid to Israel.  This would be in addition to the normal huge US military aid to Israel, and supplemental shipments of tanks and 2000-pound bombs that have obliterated entire civilian neighborhoods in Gaza.

European Parliament Finally Calls For A Ceasefire In Gaza

On March 2, progressive sections across the world observed a global day of action to demand that Israel immediately cease its genocidal war on Gaza and stop its planned invasion of Rafah. Millions of people have already hit the streets across the world calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. Several countries from the Global South have already urged international bodies to intervene in the conflict and initiate prosecution of the Zionist state of Israel and the Benjamin Nethanyahu-led government for the genocide of the Palestinians and other war crimes.

Massive March 2 Global Day of Protest: End U.S.-Israeli Genocide

Massive numbers of people turned out for actions across the United States and around the world yesterday to shut it down for Palestine! The Hands Off Rafah global day of protest came at a moment of extreme danger, as Israel’s deadline to launch the most brutal phase of its onslaught yet looms on March 10. The strong turnout was a clear signal to Biden that the people of this country and all of humanity reject his administration’s genocidal policies. Impressive turnout across the United States was testament to the sustained nature of the mass movement in solidarity with Palestine that has emerged since October.

Humanitarian Aid Drops Into Gaza Only ‘Theater’

The US joined other countries in dropping aid to Gaza by air on 2 March, an effort that aid groups describe as "theater" that contributes to chaos on the ground and does little to prevent the famine Israel is imposing upon 2.3 million Palestinians. US Central Command announced Saturday that Air Force C-130s, working with Jordan's air force, dropped containers packed with more than 38,000 meals onto the besieged enclave. The containers were dropped by parachute over the besieged enclave's Mediterranean coastline to allow "civilian access to the critical aid," Central Command said.

Defunding UNRWA Makes United States Complicit In Genocide

Earlier this year, the International Court of Justice ruled that Israel’s actions in Gaza plausibly constitute genocide. The world’s most influential judicial body ordered Israel to stop killing civilians and to admit more humanitarian aid. Unfortunately, Israel was having none of it. Israel’s killings have continued, with over 30,000 Palestinians in Gaza now dead and tens of thousands more at risk of dying from hunger and disease. Precious little aid is getting in. And worse, the U.S. has joined Israel’s efforts to incapacitate Gaza’s most important relief agency.

New Yorkers Demand Their City Council Call For A Ceasefire

From February 28 to 29, New Yorkers held a 24-hour vigil outside of City Hall to demand that the New York City Council pass a resolution to call for a ceasefire in Israel’s genocide in the Gaza Strip. The vigil was organized by the NYC 4 Ceasefire coalition, composed of several pro-Palestine organizations in the city including Adalah Justice Project, the NYC Democratic Socialists of America, VOCAL-NY, Desis Rising Up and Moving (DRUM), and NYC Dissenters. At least 70 US cities have passed resolutions calling for a ceasefire, according to Jewish Voice for Peace.

The Nobodies Are Worth More Than The Bullet That Kills Them

On 20 February, United States Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) Linda Thomas-Greenfield had the terrible job of vetoing Algeria’s resolution for a ceasefire in Gaza. Amar Bendjama, the Algerian Ambassador to the UN, said that the resolution he tabled had been shaped by conversations amongst the 15 members of the UN Security Council. He was nonetheless asked to delay the resolution, but his country refused. ‘Silence is not a viable option’, he replied. ‘Now it is the time for action and the time for truth’. When the International Court of Justice (ICJ) order on 26 January suggested that Israel’s actions in Gaza amount to a ‘plausible’ genocide, Algeria vowed to take immediate action through the UN Security Council.
