Iran Warned US Of Missile Attack, Troops Had Three Hours To Evacuate

The United States had three hours warning of the missile strikes after Iran tipped them off via a European embassy and ensured their plans of an attack were easily detectable, U.S. officials claim. The Iranians prepared for the missile strikes on two Iraqi airbases housing American troops by intentionally making sure U.S. intelligence could detect the plans via satellites and eavesdropping, the officials told TIME magazine. Intelligence managed to pick up the threat of strikes about three hours before they actually took place, according to the U.S. officials. One official said the hours-long warning enabled a U.S. military officer to visit one of the bases in Iraq and warn them of when and where the missiles were expected to strike. The revelations are in stark contrast to remarks made by the top U.S. military officer on Wednesday just hours after President Donald Trump on Wednesday suggested Iran was 'standing down'.

Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi told Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to start working out a road map for a US troop withdrawal from Iraq. The US State Department flatly dismissed the request. US forces are risking a drawn-out, bloody and unsuccessful stay in the Middle East and "they must leave the region," further, according to the state-affiliated Fars news agency. "If they do not leave the region, they will face another Vietnam."

Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the nation's top general, described a letter sent by mistake from US Marine Corps Brig. Gen. William H. Seely III to Iraqi Lt. Gen. Abdul Amir Yarallah on Monday, that announced the withdrawal of US forces from Iraq. Milley said Monday the letter was "genuine," but had been sent by "mistake," noting it was an unsigned draft meant to underscore increased levels of troop movements.

The Trump Administration crossed a dangerous line when it assassinated Iranian General Qassem Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the deputy chief of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Unit, in Iraq on Friday. This action violates international law, the principles of engagement and the sovereignty of Iraq. There was no justification for the murders, although the Trump administration and its media mouthpieces are misleading the public into believing there were. How Trump announced a troop pullout from Syria at the same time there is actually a 14,000 troop build up through the Middle East. These were the themes that dominated both the speeches, banners and posters.

Iraq's parliament voted in an extraordinary session Sunday to expel all American troops from the country and file a United Nations complaint against the U.S. for violating Iraq's sovereignty with its assassination of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani in Baghdad. Ahead of the vote, chants of "No, no, America" rang out inside the hall. "Iraq called on the U.N. Security Council to condemn the bombing and assassinations," Iraq's foreign ministry said in a statement following the vote.

On Saturday, January 4, protests against a US war on Iran took place in more than 80 cities in 38 states across the country. Organized by the ANSWER Coalition, CODEPINK and Popular Resistance, the number of protests rose quickly after President Trump's murder of Qassem Soleimani, the leader of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' elite Quds Force along with Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis, a leader of Iraq's Popular Mobilization Units on Thursday. The two were killed by US forces in Iraq by a drone close to a civilian airport in Baghdad. The United States has been conducting a "maximum pressure" campaign against Iran but these assassinations are a new level of recklessness and lawlessness by the United States. They have raised concerns by world leaders.

Nearly 18 years since the start of the war in Afghanistan and 16 years since the U.S. invasion of Iraq, majorities of U.S. military veterans say those wars were not worth fighting, according to a new Pew Research Center survey of veterans. A parallel survey of American adults finds that the public shares those sentiments. Among veterans, 64% say the war in Iraq was not worth fighting considering the costs versus the benefits to the United States, while 33% say it was. The general public’s views are nearly identical: 62% of Americans overall say the Iraq War wasn’t worth it and 32% say it was.

The scene in the Green Zone in Baghdad easily evokes memories of Tehran forty years ago. A U.S. embassy in the Persian Gulf region is under siege by an angry mob. The protestors, predominantly young, break through the outer walls of the compound as U.S. diplomats take refuge in a safe room. President Trump implicitly extends the parallel by reacting in the narrowly anti-Iran terms that have defined his policies in this part of the world. “Iran is orchestrating an attack on the U.S. Embassy in Iraq,” Trump tweeted from Mar-a-Lago. “To those many millions of people in Iraq who want freedom and who don’t want to be dominated and controlled by Iran, this is your time!” But a closer look at what has been happening in Iraq suggests that genuine anger had much more to do with events than any orchestration did. The protestors who smashed their way into the embassy compound did so in defiance of appeals from leaders armed with loudspeakers.

It’s a new year, and the U.S. has found a new enemy—an Iraqi militia called Kata’ib Hezbollah. How tragically predictable was that? So who or what is Kata’ib Hezbollah? Why are U.S. forces attacking it? And where will this lead? Kata’ib Hezbollah is one of the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) that were recruited to fight the Islamic State after the Iraqi armed forces collapsed and Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest city, fell to IS in June 2014. The first six PMUs were formed by five Shiite militias that all received support from Iran, plus Muqtada al-Sadr’s Iraqi nationalist Peace Company, the reincarnation of his anti-occupation Mahdi Army militia, which he had previously disarmed in 2008 under an agreement with the Iraqi government. Kata’ib Hezbollah was one of those five original Shiite militias, and it existed long before the fight against IS. It was a small Shiite group founded before the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003, and was part of the Iraqi Resistance throughout the U.S. occupation.
