By Tekendra Parmar for Waging Nonviolence - On June 5, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed an executive order to create a blacklist of entities that support the boycott, divestment and sanctions, or BDS, movement for Palestinian rights and remove New York State funds from any “institution or company” determined to advocate for or participate in the BDS movement. In response, protesters picketed outside Cuomo’s New York City office on June 9. The crowd was a mix of old and young — teachers, musicians, lawyers and journalists.

New Yorkers Erect Giant Tripod In Front Of AIM Pipeline Site

By Nancy Vann for Resist AIM - New Yorkers engage in a daring, peaceful, civil disobedience to stop Spectra’s continuing pipeline construction Peekskill, NY—As part of an escalating peaceful resistance campaign, concerned New Yorkers engineered a dramatic and elaborate protest against pipeline construction early this morning. A team erected a 20- foot-tripod in the path of construction equipment, and then a woman who grew up in Croton climbed up and sat at the top, thereby effectively halting construction. Additionally, two people locked to the base of the tripod. A total of six people have been arrested and taken to the Peekskill Police Station.

A Fond Farewell To New York’s Peace Pentagon

By Frida Berrigan for Anti War - Nearly 20 years ago, as I left the War Resisters League, or WRL, offices in lower Manhattan for the first time, I noticed that my fingertips were covered in black soot and ink. My hands were full of tracts and leaflets, and I had been looking through nonviolence training materials for the last hour. I tried to rub the dirt off onto my jeans, but it wouldn’t budge and later even soap and water had to work really hard. A few weeks ago, I went back to 339 Lafayette Street to say goodbye to the appropriately nicknamed Peace Pentagon.

‘Everyday There’s Resistance’: Peaceful Protesters Arrested

By Nika Knight for Common Dreams - The Algonquin Incremental Market (AIM) pipeline is being constructed by Spectra, a company that was on Friday the subject of a damning DeSmog Blog exposé unveiling deep ties between the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) head Cheryl LaFleur and Spectra executives. "We are stopping the [...] pipeline construction today, to make everyone aware of our environmental and safety concerns about this project, and to show that our voices and opinions matter,” said Tina Volz-Bongar, a local Peekskill resident who took part in the peaceful demonstration, in a statement from the rally's organizers.

Cuomo Supports State Farmworkers After They Sue Him

By Scott Heins for Gothamist - The New York Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit against Governor Cuomo and the state alleging that loopholes in state labor laws deny farmworkers the right to organize, forcing them into "life-threatening, sweatshop-like conditions." In a statement issued hours after the suit, Cuomo quickly voiced his support for farmworkers and said his administration would not fight the NYCLU lawsuit. "Because of a flaw in the state labor relations act, farm workers are not afforded the right to organize without fear of retaliation—which is unacceptable," Cuomo said.

The Inn's original location was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2000 and a New York City Landmark in 2015.

Anti-Common Core Fury Rages As Latest Exams Given Across NY

By Jaime Franchi for Long Island Press - The parking field at Stony Brook University overflowed with minivans and sedans of parents and educators who’d gotten last-minute word of a “listening tour” critical to informing New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s new Common Core Task Force about necessary modifications to the controversial education program—and ultimately, helping shape policy across the state—flooded the campus. Filled to capacity, New York State troopers directed the still oncoming traffic to impromptu curbside spots...

NYC’s New Generation Of Militant Activists

By Vienna Rye for Medium - Over the past year and a half, New York City has seen the growth of an organized, militant grassroots movement, lead by young activists of color and completely ignored by the mainstream media. Gaining steam a few months after the Ferguson Uprising in 2014, tens of thousands of New Yorkers began taking to the streets to demand justice for Mike Brown and Eric Garner. Now, seventeen months later, a coordinated network has formed, shutting down the streets on a weekly basis in every single borough.

Immigrant Workers In NYC Unmask A New Movement

By Arianna Schindle and Basma Eid for Waging Nonviolence - Omar Trinidad, pulls off a mask, as he speaks to a room of restaurant, retail, day labor, street vendor and domestic workers from across New York City. “Being a day-laborer does not make me invisible, it makes me indispensable. Being a street vendor does not make anyone less worthy, it makes us unstoppable. To build a movement, let’s take off the mask of fear! Basta ya.” For Trinidad, a member-leader at New Immigrant Community Empowerment, or NICE, ending exploitation of day laborers is not enough.

Everybody Turn Out For A Day Of Peace And Solidarity

By David Swanson for War Is A Crime - What happens when there are endless wars accompanied by militarized policing, spreading racism, erosion of civil rights, and concentration of wealth, but the only news is election news, and none of the candidates wants to talk about shrinking the world's largest military? We start by signing up at http://peaceandsolidarity.org and inviting all of our friends to do so. If we can't come, we invite all of our friends anywhere near New York to sign up and be there.

Corporate Pollution Poisons Upstate NY Town’s Water

By Andy Cush for Gawker - The New York Times today has a good recap of the situation in Hoosick Falls, New York, a small city outside Albany that has been contending with its own Flint-style water crisis. Hoosick Falls’ water was recently found to have elevated levels of perfluorooctanoic acid, a likely carcinogen. The town of 3,500 was once home to several Teflon factories, and the New York Department Environmental Conservation alleged this month that a plant currently operated by Honeywell International is responsible for the perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) spike.

Justice For Peter Liang Protest Ignores Justice For Akai Gurley

By Keegan Stephan for Keegan NYC - Today, thousands gathered in support of Peter Liang, the NYPD officer who shot and killed Akai Gurley, and was recently convicted of manslaughter and other charges by a Brooklyn jury. When family and supporters of Akai Gurley arrived to counter protest, they were booed, cursed at, flipped off, and told to leave. Protesters at the rally and on-line said they want the judge to dismiss the manslaughter charge against Liang, and believe that he was only convicted because he is Chinese-American – that racism skewed justice and he would not have been convicted if he were white or black.

NYC Shut It Down: Weekly Shut Down & Clothes For The Poor

By Keegan Stephan for Keegan NYC - On Wednesday, November 4th, before temperatures in NYC dropped to 4 degrees, and the mayor warned people to stay inside unless absolutely necessary, NYC Shut It Down, the group who has been shutting down NYC for victims of police violence every week for over a year, distributed clothes to those who have no option to stay inside, even in arctic weather – the homeless.
