NATO’s Largesse: ‘Nuclear Sharing’

In 1949, Norway joined NATO, and NATO nations have since enjoyed its “nuclear sharing ” largesse, by which member nations without nuclear weapons of their own participate in nuclear force planning, train their armed forces to use nuclear weapons, and store nuclear weapons in their territories. United States Air Force (USAF) personnel guard the nuclear weapons “shared” with NATO nations. The codes for deploying and firing them also remain under US control. In October 2016, Norway voted against a UN nuclear disarmament resolution, saying that it “will not support proposals that would weaken NATO’s role as a defense alliance.”

Back To The Dark Ages

On October 20th, 2018, fifty-one years to the day of the famous 1967 March on the Pentagon, antiwar activists again rallied for peace outside the headquarters of a now declining empire. Among the speakers was Jill Stein, the 2016 Green Party presidential candidate, who told the crowd: “There’s not a lot of democracy going on out there because they’ve got the new McCarthyism going …. The era of censorship, of warmongering and of political suppression is back big time.” Stein’s speech was given as the Trump administration announced that the U.S. was pulling out of the Inter-Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) with Russia that placed a moratorium on mid- and short-range nuclear missiles.

Come To ‘Nukes On Trial’ Dec. 7 And Celebration Of Hope Dec. 6

Five protesters who crossed the property line May 28 in Kansas City, Mo., at the new nuclear weapons parts plant come to trial Friday, Dec. 7. The five were arrested and soon released on Memorial Day, during PeaceWorks’ annual remembrance of the more than 150 deaths from contaminants from the old plant for making parts for nuclear weapons. On Dec. 6, the night before the trial, PeaceWorks will hold a Celebration of Hope from 7:30 to 9 pm at St. Mark’s Hope and Peace Lutheran Church, 3800 Troost. And on the trial day, Dec. 7, at 12:30 pm, the line-crossers and supporters will gather in the courthouse foyer for reflections before the trial, which begins at 1:30 pm in Court C of Municipal Court, Locust and 11th Street.

Physicians Work To Bring Back The Anti-Nuclear Movement

It is a move that many, including former President of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev, believe has ignited a new nuclear arms race. This is because the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, signed by Gorbachev and former US President Ronald Reagan, banned all short and mid-range nuclear and non-nuclear missiles, and helped eliminate thousands of land-based missiles. The situation is exacerbated by the fact that Trump has already promised to build new nuclear weapons, in addition to having withdrawn from the Iran nuclear deal, heightening tensions further after having previously threatened the use of nuclear weapons against North Korea. Trump has also promised to build new nuclear weapons.

No Nuclear Arms Race In Europe!

US President Trump announced to withdraw from the Intermediate Range Nuclear Force Treaty (INF) with Russia. The Treaty put an end to the stationing of land-based intermediate range nuclear missiles in Europe. It is reassuring that both sides have announced that they are seeking negotiations now. The aim of these negotiations must be to uphold the general prohibition of intermediate range nuclear missiles (“zero-solution”) in Europe, now and in future. The INF Treaty protects Europe and especially Germany since more than 30 years from being the stage of a threatening nuclear arms race. Ronald Reagan and Michail Gorbatschownegotiated the Treaty at the end of the 1980s.

Come To Nevada April 13-19: Walk For Peace, Resist Nuclear Weapons, Stand For Indigenous People’s Rights And Fill The Jails!

On Indigenous People’s Day, formerly known as Columbus Day, October 8, 2018, Nye County, Nevada, prosecutors and Sheriff’s deputies ended a three decades old policy concerning arrests of protesters at the Nevada National Security Site, NNSS, formerly known as the Nevada Test Site, 60 miles from Las Vegas. From 1986 through 1994, two years after the United States put a hold on full-scale nuclear weapons testing, 536 anti-nuclear peace demonstrations were held at the site. Many thousands participated and according to government records, 15,740 arrests were made, but starting in 1987, the Sheriff’s Department, motivated in part by the expense of so many prosecutions on a rural county, stopped charging protestors who entered the site with criminal trespass.

After Three Decades, Trespass Prosecutions Resume At Nevada Nuclear Test Site

With the United States ready to burst from the starting gate in a new nuclear arms race, a recent change in policy aims to rein in any renewed protest at the U.S. nuclear weapons test site in Nevada. On October 8, Marc Page-Collogne was arrested with two others when they stepped across the line at the Mercury gate. He was jailed for a few hours and released pending trial for trespass on December 3. The last time this simple act of crossing the line at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS, formerly known as the Nevada Test Site) was prosecuted was in 1987, at the height of mass actions against nuclear weapons testing. From 1986 until the end of full-scale nuclear testing in 1992, more than 15,000 protest arrests were reported at the Nevada Test Site.

The Abolition Of Nuclear Abolitionism?

Stephen Cohen elaborates on the following points regarding Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, signed by the US and (Soviet) Russia in 1987. For whatever reasons, both leaders at the time, President Ronald Reagan and Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev, had developed a deep personal fear of nuclear weapons. After agreeing in principle, though informally, in February 1986 that all nuclear weapons should be eliminated, the following year they abolished an entire category of those instruments of mass destruction: nuclear-warhead–bearing missiles with a range of some 500–5,500 kilometers.

US To Send Next-Generation Nuclear Weapons To Turkey: Russian Report

Russian state media claimed on July 2 that the United States is preparing to send the next generation of B61 guided nuclear gravity bombs to NATO bases in European countries, including Turkey. The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) and the U.S. Air Force completed two non-nuclear system qualification flight tests of the B61-12 gravity bomb on June 9 at Tonopah Test Range in Nevada, according to a June 29 statement by DOE/NNSA. The test, which was reportedly the first of its kind, was aimed at extending the B61 bomb’s service life by adapting it to next generation aircraft, including B-2A Spirit Bomber.

Disarm Trident Peacewalk Reaches Halfway Point Of 110 Mile Journey

A group of approximately 20 peacemakers from around the country have reached the midpoint of an 11-day, 110-mile walk from Savannah to the Kings Bay Naval Submarine Base in southern Georgia. Walkers plan to arrive in Kings Bay on September 14. Named “Disarm Trident: Savannah to Kings Bay Peace Walk,” the walk is a call to abolish nuclear weapons globally. It is inspired by and in support of the dramatic political action at the Kings Bay base on April 4 that led to the arrest of seven Catholic activists. Walkers carry placards and banners as they process single file, heading toward Brunswick and beyond along Highway 17.

Savannah To Kings Bay Peace Walk September 4 – 14 2018

We walk in solidarity with the Kings Bay Plowshares Seven, calling for the abolition of the Trident submarines and all nuclear weapons. Savannah is the home of Gulfstream, a business jet manufacturer wholly owned by General Dynamics, contractor for the making of the Tridents and one of the largest military contractors in the world. We walk in nonviolence and prayer with the hope of bending the moral arc of the world towards justice and peace.

“All Take, No Give” Won’t Work With North Korea

The United States cannot get some of what it wants without giving North Korea some of what it wants. Yet that is precisely what Washington has been trying to do—and predictably getting nowhere, as President Trump acknowledged by postponing Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s latest mission to Pyongyang. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis tried to increase pressure on the North by announcing, “We have no plans at this time to suspend any more exercises.” While he clarified that no decision had yet been made, he also noted, “We are going to see how the negotiations go...

Speaking In Front Of Israel’s Nukes, Netanyahu Says IDF Will Hit Iranian Forces In Syria With “All Its Might”

TEL AVIV, ISRAEL – During a ceremony at an Israeli nuclear-weapons development center, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivered a speech in which he stated that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) would act with “all its might” against Iranian military assets in Syria, and that Israel would oppose Iran’s presence in Syria with the same “determination” it used to push the United States to withdraw from the Iranian nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Nuclear Abolition: The Road From Armageddon To Transformation

Nuclear weapons pose a grave threat to the future of civilization. As long as we allow these weapons to exist, we flirt with the catastrophe that they will be used, whether intentionally or accidentally. Meanwhile, nuclear weapons skew social priorities, create imbalances of power, and heighten geopolitical tension. Diplomacy has brought some noteworthy steps in curbing risks and proliferation, but progress has been uneven and tenuous. The ultimate aim of abolishing these weapons from the face of the earth—the “zero option”—faces formidable challenges of ignorance, apathy, and fatigue. Yet, the total abolition of nuclear weapons is essential for a Great Transition to a future rooted in respect for life, global solidarity, and ecological resilience.

Treaties And Irrelevance: Understanding Iran’s Suit Against U.S. For Reimposing Nuclear Sanctions

As the United States gradually reimposes sanctions following its withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal (formally  the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA), the other parties to the agreement are beginning to advance their own legal measures in response. The European Union is set to activate its “Blocking Regulation” to protect EU companies doing business with Iran from U.S. sanctions. Iran just initiated proceedings against the United States in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to enjoin the reinstatement of U.S. nuclear sanctions. The case tees up an interesting question: whether, under international law, a treaty can be abrogated because too much has changed in the relationship between the parties. In other words, can a treaty become inapplicable because it is simply irrelevant?
