Colombia: A Moment Of Great Promise

By Colombia Support Network. We celebrate the agreement between the FARC guerrillas and the Colombian government to end 52 years of armed conflict through a verifiable agreement for a bilateral ceasefire. We fervently hope that the serious issues facing Colombia can now be addressed through dialogue and negotiation, without any party seeking to enforce its concepts through a call to arms. The transitional justice system, while complicated and sure to be very costly, holds great promise for a lasting peace with social justice, as long as a strong commitment by the government and civilian society supports the application of the procedures decided upon. The presence of the international community in support of the agreement to end the armed conflict and to submit the final agreement for approval by the Colombian people gives assurance that a very substantial effort will be made to carry through the points of the agreement.

What’s At Stake

By Kathy Kelly for Counterpunch. Yalta - In the historic port city of Yalta, located on the Crimean Peninsula, we visited the site where Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin, in February of 1945, concluded negotiations ending World War II. These leaders and their top advisors were also present at the creation of the United Nations and other instruments of international negotiation and non-military cooperation. Tragically, the creation of the “Cold War” was underway soon after. Reviving tensions between the United States and Russia make it seem as though the Cold War might not have ended. We also met with groups of young adults, teachers, and veterans of foreign wars. At each meeting, participants readily agreed that new peace agreements are needed.

Why Go To Russia?

By Kathy Kelly for AntiWar.com. Since 1983, Sharon Tennison has worked to develop ordinary citizens’ capacities to avert international crises, focusing on relations between the U.S. and Russia. Now, amid a rising crisis in relations between the US and Russia, she has organized a delegation which assembled in Moscow yesterday for a two week visit. I joined the group yesterday, and happened to finish reading Sharon Tennison’s book, The Power of Impossible Ideas, when I landed in Moscow. An entry in her book, dated November 9, 1989, describes the excitement over the Berlin Wall coming down and notes that “Prior to the Wall’s removal, President George H.W. Bush assured Secretary General Gorbachev that if he would support bringing down the Wall separating East and West Berlin, NATO would not move ‘a finger’s width’ closer to Russia than East Germany’s border.

Why I Am Going To Russia

By David Hartsough. The US and Russian governments are pursuing dangerous policies of nuclear brinkmanship. Many people believe we are closer to nuclear war than at any time since the Cuba missile crisis in 1962. Thirty-one thousand troops from the US and NATO countries are engaged in military maneuvers on the Russian border in Poland - together with tanks, military planes and missiles. The US has just activated an anti-ballistic missile site in Romania which the Russians see as part of an American first strike policy. Now the US can fire missiles with nuclear weapons at Russia, and then the anti-ballistic missiles could shoot down Russian missiles shot toward the west in response, the assumption being only the Russians would suffer from nuclear war.. A former NATO general has said he believes there will be nuclear war in Europe within a year.

Newsletter: Creating “Positive Peace”

By Margaret Flowers and Kevin Zeese. This weekend the Bilderberg Group is holding its secretive annual retreat in Dresden, Germany. The invitation-only gathering of elites from North America and Northern Europe includes heads of finance and industry, heads of state and intelligence officials. Who knows what schemes they'll cook up? They don't keep minutes or allow the press in and attendees can't quote what was said. It can't be good for the people or the planet. The Global Peace Index was just released for 2016 and it shows that the decade-long trend of increasing violence is continuing. Of note, the inequality between countries is growing; the most violent countries deteriorated by a greater degree than in the past. Countries that are the most peaceful also have the greatest resilience.

Global Peace Index Records Historically Less Peaceful And More Unequal World

By Staff of Vision of Humanity - The 2016 Global Peace Index (GPI) shows the world became less peaceful in the last year, reinforcing the underlying trend of declining peace over the last decade. Results also show a growing global inequality in peace, with the most peaceful countries continuing to improve while the least peaceful are falling into greater violence and conflict. The 2016 GPI report provides a comprehensive update on the state of peace.

Free Prisoners Of Conscience In South Korea

By Popular Resistance. Washington, DC - A delegation of three women are currently visiting the United States as representatives of a coalition of social justice and labor organizations called the Corean Alliance for Independent Reunification and Democracy (CAIRD) on a peace expedition. They are educating activists in the US about the serious situation in the Republic of Korea for social justice activists. The government of President Park Geun-hye is using the National Security Law in an extreme way to ban protests and arrest activists. For example, simply speaking positively about North Korea is a crime punishable with seven years in prison. Activists who participated in peaceful demonstrations last year are currently in jail or are facing imprisonment. They are considered to be prisoners of conscience by CAIRD members. One activist in particular, Kim Hye-young, needs support from people in the US.

Peace Activists Jailed, Stories From Prison

By David Omondi, Dennis Apel and Jeff Dietrich. The letters below were sent by Felton Davis and were written by three peace activists who were recently sentenced to jail in Los Angeles for their nonviolent action at Vandenberg Air Force Base. Felton writes: Activists from California have been sentenced to federal prison following a nonviolent witness for peace at Vandenberg Air Force Base earlier this year. They began their sentences at the Los Angeles Metropolitan Detention Center , but may be transferred to other prisons. Here in the East, four of us who were arrested at the Pentagon on March 25th have had our charges dropped. Libby Johnson, Sr. Carol Gilbert, Sr. Ardeth Platte , and myself were scheduled for trial on May 20th for "failure to obey a lawful order," but were informed by the US Attorney's office that they would not be proceeding with the case. It's impossible to compare these short sentences handed out to people who are coming from a position of social privilege, with the fate of those who are entrapped, stigmatized, convicted through "guilt by association," loaded with trumped-up charges, and taken away to be held in isolation for long periods.

Hedy Epstein, Activist For Justice, Dies At 91

By Dianne Lee for Mondoweiss. Holocaust survivor Hedy Epstein, 91, died at her home in St. Louis, Missouri, USA, on May 26, 2016. An internationally renowned, respected and admired advocate for human and civil rights, Hedy was encircled by friends who lovingly cared for her at home. Born August 15, 1924, in the Baden-Württemberg region of Germany, her lifelong commitment to human rights was formed by the horrific experiences she and her family endured under the repressive Nazi regime. Unable to secure travel documents for themselves, Hedy’s parents, Hugo and Ella (Eichel) Wachenheimer, arranged for 14-year-old Hedy to leave Germany on a Kindertransport. Hedy credited her parents with giving her life a second time when they sent her to England to live with kind-hearted strangers.

Planting A Seed For Peace

By Esty Dinur for Isthmus - It’s a beautiful, sunny Saturday morning at the Farmers’ Market, and David Soumis is patiently listening to a man make a point. “I’m a warmonger,” asserts the man. “No, call me a militarist. I believe in strong defense and a strong military, but I also believe in the Constitution.” Soumis, who’s wearing a Veterans for Peace vest, advocates a much different worldview. But he doesn’t try to change the man’s mind.

Declaration on ‘Future Syrian Constitution’

From Peace in Syria. A second conference on the future constitution of Syria was held in Vienna, Austria from April 27 to 29, 2016. Since approx. three years the promoters of the international peace initiative www.peaceinsyria.org/ have mobilized a great number of peace activists and outstanding personalities of political and cultural life in Europe, Asia and Latin America – all of them deeply convinced that a military solution of the Syrian conflict is not possible and the bloodshed has to be stopped. Gathering around the need for a POLITICAL DIALOG the promoters of this initiative went on different occasions to Damascus, Beirut, Istanbul, Qamishli and Aleppo in order to contact the main political actors from each side

Price For Witnessing Against War

By Ray McGovern for Consortium News. During the first Ronald Reagan administration, it was my job to conduct early morning one-on-one briefings of the Secretary of Defense (Caspar Weinberger), Secretary of State (George Shultz), and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (Gen. Jack Vessey) and also, depending on their schedules, Vice President George H. W. Bush, as well as a movable feast of Assistants to the President for National Security Affairs. Another senior CIA officer and I took turns, each of us briefing every other day six days a week. As professional intelligence analysts, we conducted ourselves in a completely non-partisan way, and our services were appreciated. We relied largely on The President’s Daily Brief that we had helped prepare the day before, and we updated and supplemented the material in it, as needed.

Peace Activist, Poet and Writer, Daniel Berrigan Dead At 94

From a variety of sources on the death of Daniel Berrigan: We are bereft. We are so sad. We are aching and wrung out. Our bodies are tired as Dan’s was—after a hip fracture, repeated infections, prolonged frailty. And we are so grateful: for the excellent and conscientious care Dan received at Murray Weigel, for his long life and considerable gifts, for his grace in each of our lives, for his courage and witness and prodigious vocabulary. Dan taught us that every person is a miracle, every person has a story, every person is worthy of respect.

Global Zero Protests The Nuclear Security Summit

By Liz Merrow for Global Zero. Washington, DC - Global Zero activists from all over the United States gathered in Washington, DC to protest at the Nuclear Security Summit. What happened next was nothing short of the Best. Day. Ever. Convened by President Obama, this summit of world leaders aims to secure nuclear materials all over the globe -- which is a great idea in principle, until you find out that nuclear weapons aren’t even on the agenda. And as long as there are 15,000 nuclear weapons in existence, nuclear security is impossible. Participants from Global Zero’s 2016 Action Lab organizer training joined us in downtown DC to call on Summit participants to address the threat posed by nukes and to see our lifesize inflatable nuclear missile. Over a hundred activists turned out to send a clear message: 15,000 does not equal security.

Newsletter – A Peek At Empire

By Margaret Flowers and Kevin Zeese for Popular Resistance. It's impacts are all around us, but it is rarely mentioned. What is it? Empire, and it's time to bring it out of the shadows. We take a peek at the history of US Empire and how it continues to grow and be all-consuming today. The Empire Economy plunders our national treasury and robs us of jobs, education, healthcare and a future while serving transnational corporations. The US military is the biggest single user of fossil fuels which pollutes the planet and worsens the climate crisis. Our 'American Way of War' targets the basic necessities of life like power stations, hospitals and water plants for destruction and turns peaceful people against each other causing chaos and creating a vacuum for extremism and aggression against the US. The Pentagon cannot be audited but demands more every year. The war culture pervades our society.
