Mountaineer Gas Pipeline: Rockwool Foes Zero In On ‘Blood Supply’ Of Unwelcome Factory

Hundreds of people packed the room at the Shepherd University Student Center Wednesday night to deliver impassioned statements to the West Virginia Public Service Commission on a permit for a gas pipeline extension in the Eastern Panhandle. The proposed extension of the Mountaineer Gas Pipeline would cut through Jefferson County to supply a new industrial park near Charles Town. At the moment, the only customer is the Rockwool mineral wool factory, which has just begun construction under a cloud of controversy. Opponents of Rockwool are incensed that local and state governments subverted the county’s comprehensive plan, manipulated zoning codes and negotiated generous tax breaks and subsidies in secrecy.

Workers At 40 Airports Will Stage Demonstrations In October

On Tuesday, October 2, employee demonstrations organized by the Airport Workers United campaign will take place at over 40 airports in 13 countries. The demonstrations are intended to mobilize wheelchair attendants, baggage handlers and other laborers who perform low-skilled jobs at airports to demand higher pay and better working conditions. Protests will be held in Baltimore, Seattle, Los Angeles, Newark, Boston and airports across Europe. Combined, 36 percent of all air travel passes through the affected airports. The group behind the Airport Workers United campaign is the Service Employees International Union(SEIU). The SEIU has over two million members worldwide and is a heavy-hitter when it comes to funding Democrats, shelling out $1.4 million to congressional candidates in the 2016 election cycle and $780,346 in the 2018 cycle according to data released by the FEC on Sept. 24.

WASHINGTON — A number of Environmental Protection Agency employees spent their lunch hour Wednesday outside agency headquarters calling for the immediate ouster of their boss, agency chief Scott Pruitt. One longtime staffer who requested anonymity to comment candidly told HuffPost they find Pruitt to be perfectly personable, but fear what will come of his efforts to discard decades of hard work aimed at keeping the American public healthy and safe. “How much damage are we going to do in four years?” he asked. “And how many years is it going to take to get back [to where things were]?” The “Boot Pruitt Rally” was hosted by a union that represents thousands of EPA workers and part of a nationwide campaign launched by progressive environmental groups who say Pruitt is unfit to lead the scientific agency and is “working for industry at the expense of our health and the environment.”

London, England - Protests have erupted in London, with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman beginning his visit to the UK with a meeting with Theresa May, British prime minister. Hundreds of demonstrators stood on Downing Street, holding signs with "Hands off Yemen" and "No more profits from bin Salman's wars" outside May's office. According to Downing Street, the meeting between the 32-year-old Mohammad bin Salman, better known as MBS, and May will tackle international challenges, such as terrorism, extremism, the conflict and humanitarian crisis in Yemen and other regional issues such as Iraq and Syria.

I am grateful to the elders in my family line that have taught me the power of telling our stories. As a daughter of artist activists I was raised knowing that the resistance in your art and storytelling matters, and that there is great responsibility in telling stories that contest violence and injustice. I know this is right, but I also know that as activists, artists, organizers, culture makers, we can’t share our narratives and collective visions for our future without open, accessible platforms. This past December the FCC voted to disband net neutrality. What does this mean? It means we would no longer have an open internet. Net Neutrality are rules that would make the internet easily accessible for everyone to use as an open platform to communicate. Net Neutrality rules protections prevent internet service providers from creating a hierarchy of access based on how much you pay for their services.

It is astonishingly rare for any kind of direct action to be truly spontaneous. Most of the major marches or pickets you see on the news were weeks or months in the planning and organizing, and this is no exception. Best case scenario at the time of writing is that you have three weeks to plan if you are walking out on March 14. That’s short notice, but very far from impossible. The longer time horizon of April 20 is going to allow you to potentially do more publicly facing actions, like teach-ins, or arrange for speakers. Either way, the steps you need to follow are the same, how much time you have to do them is the only difference. First, your strongest shield is numbers. The bigger the walkout, the harder it will be for administrators and teachers to retaliate against you for taking action.

Starting Dec. 28, 2017, Iran has witnessed anti-government protests in several cities and towns. The character and the demands of the demonstrations have varied greatly and seem to have already evolved over the course of a few days. From the beginning, Iranian government officials have stated that people have a right to demonstrate, but that acts of sabotage and violence would be dealt with forcefully. The first few protests focused mainly on economic issues. Demonstrations were peaceful and marched down streets chanting slogans. These initial protests seemed to occur without major incidents. From there, some of the marches become more militant and aggressive, with garbage cans and police cars set ablaze. By the night of Dec. 31, 2017, protests took on the form of armed attacks on government buildings and police stations. By Jan. 3, hundreds had been arrested and 21 people have been killed.

Slap This! New Yorkers Rally In Support Of Ahed Tamimi

During rush hour Friday, more than 100 people gathered under the hallowed arches of Grand Central Terminal’s Main Concourse to protest the detention and likely conviction of 16-year-old Palestinian Ahed Tamimi. The teenage girl was detained by Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) on Dec. 19 during a pre-dawn raid on her family’s home in the occupied West Bank village of Nabi Saleh. Her crime: slapping an IDF soldier who was armed with an M-16 assault rifle. The incident was captured on video and has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times online. Only moments prior to the soldiers’ arrival, Tamimi had learned that her cousin, 15-years-old Mohammed Tamimi, was in life-threatening condition after another soldier shot the boy at close-range with a rubber bullet. Half of Mohammed Tamimi’s skull is caved in and he will likely be disabled for the rest of his life.

I’m tired. I’m uncomfortable. My ass is numb and my nose is running. I could go home. Unlike the hundreds of thousands of Americans who live outside on subzero nights like this; the literal outcasts of a system that systematically places profit over people, I am privileged enough to have a home to go to – a warm bed, and perhaps even a cat that’ll deign to snuggle with me for a couple of hours. But for tonight, I stay. And it’s not because I think the sight of my awkwardly constructed tent or handmade sign will sway FCC Chairman Ajit Pai to consider the will of more than 80% of Americans and more than 75% of Republicans who want Net Neutrality.

Tacoma Residents And Indigenous Communities Unite To Oppose LNG Plant

By Brandon Jordan for Waging Nonviolence - Around 250 people, mostly women, carried banners and sang with drummers while marching through the streets of Tacoma, Washington, on Tuesday. Led by Cheryl Angel, an indigenous activist present at Standing Rock last year, the demonstrators headed toward a city council meeting to protest a liquefied natural gas plant project. There was just one problem — officials had locked the doors to City Hall. Demonstrators weren’t discouraged, however, as they finished their march at a nearby plaza. “They call it protesting,” Angel said, while speaking in the plaza. “Why are they calling it protesting? Are we really protesting, or are we standing up for what’s right? Because this shouldn’t have to be a protest, it should be an acknowledgment [of our rights].” Washington’s oldest energy utility, Puget Sound Energy, or PSE, is behind the over $300 million facility, which is expected to be completed and operational in the port area of the Tacoma Tideflats by late 2019. The Tacoma LNG Facility, as it’s called, will be able to process and hold approximately eight million gallons of liquefied natural gas — obtained via hydraulic fracking from nearby Rocky Mountain states and parts of Canada — and is mainly intended for use by local residents, as well as ships passing by the Port of Tacoma.

‘No New Power Plant’ Dominates Ancients And Horribles Parade

By Steve Ahlquist for RI Future - For the second year in a row a float with the theme of opposing Invenergy‘s proposed $1 billion fracked gas and diesel oil burning power plant has taken first prize in the Glocester, Rhode Island Ancients and Horribles Parade. The float and marchers won first place in two categories, Large Float and Best Current Event. It should be noted that there were at least two groups opposing the plant marching in the parade, and that not everyone marching in the parade opposing the plant were backing all the messaging on display in the pictures below. The Burrillville Land Trust marched earlier in the parade and had its own messaging separate from the float and marchers who won awards. Paul Roselli, president of the Burrillville Land Trust, spoke briefly (in the video below) about the need to finish the power plant off before next year’s parade. After the Burrillville Land Trust and separated by some bands and other marchers came the award winning float. This year, actors pantomimed Senator Sheldon Whitehouse and Johnston Mayor Joseph Polisena enabling Invenergy’s director of development John Niland as he consumed the Scituate Reservoir.

NC Demonstrators Rally For ‘Independence’ From Fossil Fuels

They called for independence from fossil fuels on Independence Day—promoting renewable energy, like wind and solar. "For a long time people have talked about the need for a clean energy revolution in our country. The good news is, in a lot of ways, it's already underway,” Buncombe County Commissioner Brownie Newman, who spoke at the event, said. Newman helped fire up more than a hundred people at Lake Julian Park. "At our last county commission meeting, with the encouragement of some of the people that are here today, I along with county commissioners Jasmine Beach-Ferrara and Ellen Frost, and Al Whitesides proposed to establish a 100 percent clean and renewable goal for Buncombe County," Newman said. Pro-environmental group Community Roots hosted the event and eventually led the crowd to the water. Tyler Garrison, a board member with Community Roots, then led the paddle towards the Duke Energy plant. "We hope number one we'll accomplish, which we already have accomplished, a greater sense of solidarity in the community [which we're] all pushing for [and] what we all want to see,” Garrison said, “[to] stop the oppression of the fossil fuel empire that's currently got their hands around our necks."

Fight Toxic Prison 2017 Convergence Ends With #CloseCarswell Demo

By Staff of The Campaign to Fight Toxic Prisons - After 3 days of networking, movement building and organizing at the Fight Toxic Prisons (FTP) Convergence in Denton, TX, approximately 50 organizers and revolutionaries from across the country gathered outside the Carswell federal prison. The protest marched to the remote back gates of the facility, which is located on a massive military base that has a long history of environmental contamination and contains a repressive, secretive Administrative Unit. Today’s demonstration kicked-off of an international effort to demand the immediate closure of Carswell’s Administrative Unit, a unit similar to draconian Communication Management Units. The Carswell Admin Unit has been used to isolate female and trans political prisoners as well as prisoners with serious mental health needs. Armed with a mobile sound system and bullhorn, the demonstration was able to create a loud disruption for guards and establish contact with prisoners across the razor wire fences with amplified chants of “You are not forgotten, you are not alone, we will fight to bring you home!”
