Chile is fighting back and the people refuse to be silent any longer. Beginning October 18, a people’s movement has risen, started by high school students who made a call to protest against the increase of transportation fares. But no one predicted that this call to mobilize would spark an uprising of the Chilean people. What is behind the massive demonstrations nationwide is a profoundly unequal economic system, created by decades of neoliberal policies that have continuously increased the cost of living while wages have stayed stagnant.

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Food availability is uncertain for 60 percent of the people. Conditions are bleak, and bleaker still from shortages, rampant political corruption, and not much to show after two years of regular street protests. In the year prior to September, security forces killed 77 people. That month protests accentuated and by October 7 they had killed at least 17 more. One observer looking at recrudescence of turmoil recently describes “lockdown.”

The community of Cochapamba located in Pichincha, two hours from Quito and at an altitude of 3,800 meters (over 12,000 feet), is in assembly. Quechua is spoken with a few words in Spanish, and it is done with strength, reflection, pain and will. "We can't remain indifferent to the social movement out there," Escondida Union No. 1 president Patricio Tapia, whose organization voted to stop work at the Escondida copper mine for 10 hours Monday night or Tuesday morning, told Bloomberg Monday.

United Nations-backed dialogue table installed between Lenin Moreno's governement and leaders of Indigenous organizations reached a historic deal Sunday to revoke pro-IMF Decree 883, end strikes across the country, and to set up a comission that will write the new document that will replace it. The U.N. Representative in Ecuador Arnaud Peral informed that the new decree will be drawn up by organizations of the Indigenous movement, participants from the dialogue and the government with mediation from the international body and the Catholic church.

In his short five-minute televised speech, the Ecuadorean President Lenin Moreno informed the seat of government has been moved to Guayaquil. The president then went ahead to accuse, with no evidence, that the protests against his government are financed by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and former Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa. With the Military Brass standing behind him and both, his vice president and minister of defense to each side, the head of state then reiterated that he won't back down from the decision to eliminate fuel subsidies as he dubbed it "historic."

“Se acabó la zanganería” — “The zanganería is over.” With these words, uttered on October 4, Ecuador’s President Lenin Moreno proclaimed the end of a 40-year policy of fuel and petrol subsidies, which had traditionally benefited his country’s working-class population. Zángano, the Spanish word for a male honey bee, otherwise known as a drone, is a slang term traditionally used by rich, elite parts of society to refer to workers and the poor, whom they denigrate as “mindless” or “uneducated.” The use of the term by Moreno, a close ally of Washington, reflected the president’s resentful attitude toward ordinary Ecuadorians.

It is not quite the same as the uprising that occurred during Venezuela’s Caracazo in 1989 but it is very similar. In that opportunity, then President Carlos Andres Perez, beholden to the demands of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), also decided to increase public transportation fares and a people’s rebellion provided the ground work for what would become Hugo Chavez’s Bolivarian Venezuela. The events unfolding in Ecuador are the result of the implementation of the IMF’s coercive manual, undertaken by a person who pretended to be somebody and suddenly became somebody else.

The aid money came through Venezuela’s PetroCaribe program, which had allowed Haiti to buy petroleum products at discount and on credit. However, the program has now been suspended for more than a year because of the interests of US imperialism, which backs the Haitian regime and has supported coup attempts to install a right-wing regime in Venezuela. The suspension has meant that Haiti’s long-suffering people have been faced with an extra burden: an ever-worsening fuel shortage that has resulted in closed service stations, rising prices and long lines to buy petrol.

Last year alone, some 189 Palestinians – including children, journalists, and the disabled – were killed at the border, most by Israeli live ammunition; 23,000 have been injured.
