This morning, the final two Handala volunteers held in Givon Prison–Christian Smalls from the United States and Hatem Aouini from Tunisia–were freed via Jordan’s King Hussein/Allenby Bridge after five days of unlawful imprisonment in occupied Palestine. Both had been on hunger strike to protest mistreatment. Aouini was received by the Tunisian embassy at the border. Despite repeated requests for assistance, neither the U.S. Consulate nor U.S. Embassy officials met Christian at the border, even after being notified in advance of his arrival details.

Under siege by France’s monetary strangulation and a war against their state by armed groups, Nigeriens marked the second anniversary of the July 26 revolution against French neocolonialism.
The wave of mass protests against French military deployment in its former colonies had already washed away the regimes it had propped up in Mali and Burkina Faso when Niger’s then-president, Mohamad Bazoum, was also toppled in a coup on this date in 2023.
With the support of pan-Africanists, the left, and the mass movement protesting against French domination, the coup leader, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, established the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP) as a military government.

When Alabama lawmakers passed a sweeping anti-immigration bill in 2011, backlash was swift. Immigrant advocates warned that Latinos were fleeing the state, fearing arrests for their status or for "harboring" undocumented people. And some business leaders condemned the law after police arrested German and Japanese car executives for not having their licenses on them, a practice intended to funnel undocumented people from police stops into deportation proceedings.
Civil rights groups sued, and courts overturned much of the law as unconstitutional. Activists thought the effort was behind them.

This month, Congress passed the GENIUS Act, an acronym for the “Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for U.S. Stablecoins of 2025.” Designed to regulate stablecoins, a category of cryptocurrency designed to maintain a stable value, the Act is highly controversial.
Critics variously argue that it anoints stablecoins as the equivalent of “programmable” central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), that it lacks strong consumer protections, and that government centralization destroys the independence of the cryptocurrency market.

Earth Overshoot Day is the point in the year when human demand for materials obtained from nature exceeds what the Earth can naturally regenerate in one year. For 2025, Earth Overshoot Day fell on July 24, the earliest it has been since the event was first calculated in 2006.
The Earth Overshoot Day was first launched in 2006 by Andrew Simms, an author, political economist and campaigner, in collaboration with Global Footprint Network, as reported by Sustainability Magazine. Since then, Earth Overshoot Day is calculated and announced annually. Since 2006, the date has come earlier and earlier, signaling just how rapidly human consumption habits are growing and stripping the planet of its resources.

The far-right Patriots for Europe (PfE), currently the third-largest group in the European Parliament, achieved a major victory in July. The group will lead negotiations on the EU’s 2040 climate target – a powerful role that will allow it to draft the Parliament’s position on the EU’s climate policies.
This appointment signals a turning point. After years on the political fringes, the far-right now holds tangible influence over the EU’s climate agenda, and plans to use this newfound power to “call for a genuine overhaul of EU climate policy,” the group declared on X.

A former contractor for the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) says he saw Israeli soldiers commit war crimes at the aid distribution sites being run by the Israeli-backed American agency.
In a series of interviews, former GHF employee and Green Beret Anthony Aguilar alleged that he saw Israeli soldiers use “indiscriminate” force against civilians at various Gaza aid sites.
“My most frank assessment — I would say that they are criminal,” said Aguilar. “In my entire career, I have never witnessed the level of brutality and use of indiscriminate and unnecessary force against a civilian population, an unarmed, starving population.”

Since 2021, the Black Alliance for Peace Haiti/Americas Team has tracked the deepening crisis of imperialism in Haiti, in particular how imperialist forces and neocolonial puppets have worked to suppress and eliminate the organizing of popular movements and the will of the Haitian people. Over the last four years, this crisis has impacted nations around the globe, in particular Kenya.
This summer marks the one-year anniversary of Kenya’s youth-led uprising against the IMF-backed Finance Bill of 2024. Instead of reckoning with the demands of a generation that has endured skyrocketing inflation, police violence, and mass unemployment, President William Ruto has once again unleashed the full force of state repression.

Big Corporations Are Using Trump Trade Chaos To Jack Up Prices
The effects of U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs are winding their way through the American economy, and a new piece of analysis claims that corporate America is using them as “cover” to further jack up prices.
Progressive advocacy group Groundwork Collaborative issued a new report on Tuesday that uses corporate executives’ own words to show how many firms are taking advantage of the tariff situation by using it as an all-purpose justification for price increases. The report found many of these executives’ admissions through quarterly earnings calls in which they discussed plans to increase costs even if their inputs were not being significantly affected by the tariffs.
A Textbook Case Of How Tax Policy Fuels Obscene Wealth Accumulation
The recent wedding of Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez in Venice set off quite the furor over tax avoidance. An enormous banner in the Piazza San Marco put the matter plainly: “If you can rent Venice for your wedding, you can pay more tax.”
That banner prompted a commentary from Phoebe Liu at Forbes on how much tax Bezos does indeed pay. For the year 2024, according to a Forbes estimate, Bezos paid about $2.7 billion in tax on the gain from his sale of $13.6 billion worth of Amazon stock. That stock — the heart of the Bezos fortune since he started Amazon in 1994 — originally cost him no more than $13,600.

A new ruling from the World Court provides climate activists new tools for demanding accountability.
On July 23, in a stunning 140 page advisory opinion, the International Court of Justice (ICJ, or World Court) held for the first time that there is a human right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment, and countries have a legal obligation to protect the climate from greenhouse gas emissions. The ICJ found that climate change poses “an existential problem of planetary proportions that imperils all forms of life and the very health of our planet.”

Türkiye is facing “apocalyptic” wildfires according to one official in the northwest Bursa region. Temperatures in central Anatolia hit an unusual 108.32º F [42.4º C.]. But the record-breaking temperature was recorded in the southeastern town of Silopi — of 122.9º F. [50.5º C.] — in the largely Kurdish Şırnak province. Although the very highest temperatures were elsewhere, it was so hot and dry in northwestern Turkey south of Istanbul that massive fires broke out at Bursa and elsewhere in that region, causing thousands of people to flee their homes.
Palestinians Are Not Starving In Gaza; They are Being Starved!

Recently I was listening to an NPR program talking about Palestine and the genocide in Gaza and the point was made that Palestinians in Gaza are starving. People need to be very clear on this point, Palestinians in Gaza are not starving! I repeat, that’s just not true. Palestinians in Gaza are being starved to death. This is not a distinction without a difference.
It would be appropriate to say that Palestinians are starving if they were the victims of a natural catastrophe or an act of God, such as a drought. One could say that Palestinians are starving if crops could not be grown and grass were burned so the animals could not graze, such as in Sudan.

New York City - The Brooklyn Navy Yard is a manufacturing complex that is heavily involved in military research and technological development. Originally a shipbuilding facility for the U.S. Navy, BNY now aids and abets the genocide of people living on Turtle Island and West Asia.
Hidden among art studios and food vendors, the Navy Yard leases space to two companies that directly supply military equipment and tactical gear to the Israel Occupation Forces: Easy Aerial and Crye Precision. Founded by Ivan Stamavski and former IOF soldier Ido Gur in 2015, Easy Aerial is an Israeli-U.S. drone manufacturer that supplies autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles to the IOF for use across West Asia.
