7 Days till Shutdown: Homeless Students Need Same Internet Access

By Staff of Voqal - When families with students enrolled at Central Pennsylvania Digital Learning Foundation can’t afford Internet access, the cyber school provides affordable solutions through Mobile Citizen. According to Technology Coordinator Micheal Tambellini, the number of families requiring connectivity assistance is growing. “We have a small percentage of homeless students enrolled today, and unfortunately that number seems to be increasing,” he said. “To keep up with the curriculum, they need the same Internet access as all of our other cyber students.”

This Halloween Costume Is Not OK

By CODEPINK and ANSWER. United States - While violence escalates in the West Bank, and Palestinians are being killed and injured by Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), American companies like Amazon have put on the market this costume sold by Dress Up America and Wholesale Halloween Costumes. Tell Amazon that occupation and violence isn’t a costume: Drop the Israeli soldier costume now! Since October 1, renewed violence has left 11 Israelis dead, while Israeli forces have killed at least 63 Palestinians and injured thousands of others. Many of those killed and injured have been children. The Israeli soldiers, long a symbol of fear, violence and repression against Palestinians, should not be used for entertainment purposes!

Stop Obama From Putting Big Pharma In Charge Of FDA

By CREDO Action - Petition to the U.S. Senate: "Oppose the nomination of Dr. Robert Califf as head of the Food and Drug Administration. At a time of rising prescription drug prices and safety risks we need a champion for American families, not an insider so closely tied to the pharmaceutical industry." Americans pay the highest prices for prescription drugs of anywhere in the world – and the cost is going up, 12% on average in the last year and in some cases nearly 1,000%. We need an FDA chief with the guts to stand up to the pharmaceutical companies. But instead, President Obama has nominated Robert Califf, a doctor described as “the ultimate industry insider.” Sen. Bernie Sanders recently made waves by announcing he would oppose Califf’s nomination, and we need to demand the rest of the Senate follow his lead.

Tell Congress To Reject The TPP!

By Popular Resistance. On November 18, we and our allies will deliver thousands of petitions to Congress calling on them to reject the TransPacific Partnership (TPP) as part of the #FallRising mobilization in Washington, DC. At least, that's what we hope to do. TransAtlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) resisters in the European Union delivered more than 3 million petitions on October 7th. To reach our goal, we need you to click on the link below, sign and share the petition. Research and the history of trade agreements since NAFTA show that these types of trade agreements produce trade deficits, lost jobs, lower wages and environmental damage. The TPP’s scope is too broad. It usurps the legislative authority of Congress by writing rules concerning safety and labeling of foods, access to healthcare and medicine, regulation of banks, rights or workers, future energy sources and so much more. Essentially, its scope is everything. These are issues that should be considered by Congress not written in secret by trade negotiators.

Release The Kunduz Bombing Tapes

By David Swanson for Let's Try Democracy - There is video and audio. It exists. The Pentagon says it's critically important. Congress has asked for it and been refused. WikiLeaks is offering $50,000 to the next brave soul willing to be punished for a good deed in the manner of Chelsea Manning, Thomas Drake, Edward Snowden, and so many others. You can petition the White House to hand it over here. The entire world thinks the U.S. military intentionally attacked a hospital because it considered some of the patients enemies, didn't give a damn about the others, and has zero respect for the rule of law in the course of waging an illegal war. Even Congress members think this. All the Pentagon would have to do to exonerate itself would be to hand over the audio and video of the pilots talking with each other and with their co-conspirators on the ground during the commission of the crime -- that is, if there is something exculpatory on the tapes, such as, "Hey, John, you're sure they evacuated all the patients last week, right?"

Tell Obama: Even War Has Rules

By Dr. Joanne Liu for Doctors Without Borders (MSF). Geneva, Switzerland - On Saturday morning, MSF patients and staff killed in Kunduz joined the countless number of people who have been killed around the world in conflict zones and referred to as ‘collateral damage’ or as an ‘inevitable consequence of war’. International humanitarian law is not about ‘mistakes’. It is about intention, facts and why. The US attack on the MSF hospital in Kunduz was the biggest loss of life for our organisation in an airstrike. Tens of thousands of people in Kunduz can no longer receive medical care now when they need it most. Today we say: enough. Even war has rules. In Kunduz our patients burned in their beds. MSF doctors, nurses and other staff were killed as they worked. Our colleagues had to operate on each other.

Stop The TPP: Tell USTR ‘No To This Bad Deal!’

By Staff of Popular Resistance. Trade ministers from around the world are meeting in Atlanta, GA today through Thursday in a desperate attempt to finalize the text of the TransPacific Partnership (TPP). Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper is feeling pressured by the October 19 elections as the opposition parties step up their criticism of the TPP. People are rising up in protest to this deal that is bad for people and the planet! In Ottawa, Canada, farmers brought their tractors to the capital to demonstrate against the harmful impacts the TPP will have on local dairy farms. In Atlanta, Georgia, a coalition of groups are holding a series of actions this week.

Major Victory: Shell Abandons Arctic Drilling

By Terry Macalister for the Guardian - The movement has done an incredible job over the last three years protesting Shell's arctic drilling culminating with the #SHellNo campaign this summer. The stock of Shell was dropping, its' public image was taking a major hit and the company was going to see an escalation of protest against it. This was always a risky and foolish invesment. An important lesson for the movement, one we have seen repeated in our experience on a wide range of issues: you never know how close you are to victory. It looked the protests had failed to stop Shell. They got their equipment into the Artic and began drilling. There were no indications of Shell giving up even last week. This should hearten all of those fighting what seem like impossible campaigs. You may be closer than you think. Keep fighting, never give up. Of course, this is not over. There is still a rapacious desire for oil and we need to continue to push for an end to all licenses for drilling in the arctic. We are urging people to take action to finish the job. Send an email to President Obama today urging him to ban arctic drilling.

Call To Action: Stop Bank Loans To Oil & Gas!

By We Are Cove Point - There are constant press reports on the financial crisis of the oil and gas industries. Prices of oil are hovering far below the break-even point, and prices are not expected to rise for several years. At present, the oil and gas industries are spending more money than they are taking in. Oppenheimer reports that “all oil companies are funding their dividend through additional borrowing or asset sales, and even the majors could be forced to freeze or cut their dividend, which could sink their shares.” The banks are getting very nervous that they will not be paid back the billions of dollars they have loaned these industries. The problem is so severe that they are talking about oil and gas as “stranded assets.”

No Health Insurance Mega Mergers – Healthcare Is A Right!

By Health Care NOW! - The country's five largest for-profit health insurers are trying to merge into three mega corporations, creating an oligopoly that will drive up premiums for patients and employers, cut payments to doctors, and pocket the difference as profits. The health insurance industry is a national embarrassment that is costing patients their income and sometimes their lives. High deductibles and limited networks are becoming the norm, making healthcare inaccessible even for the insured. Tell Attorney General Loretta Lynch to block the health insurance mergers, since healthcare is a right and shouldn't be controlled by "too big to fail" insurance profiteers. All of the powers that make single-payer healthcare so effective - the ability to negotiate low prices for drugs and medical devices, and set fair rates for providers - are deadly in the hands of for-profit insurers, who pocket savings instead of passing them along to patients, and squeeze providers until the quality of care plummets.

Activists Want The U.S. Institute Of Peace To Favor Peace

By David Swanson in TeleSur - The World may be shocked to learn United States government has an Institute of Peace; Orwell would not have been. Gallup polling finds that much of the world believes the U.S. government to be the greatest threat to peace on earth. It comes as a surprise to many that the U.S. government maintains and funds something called the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP) which operates out of a shiny new building near the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., a building with a curved roof clearly meant to resemble a dove and yet somehow more closely resembling a giant brassiere. George Orwell, had he lived to see USIP, might have been less surprised than most. In fact, USIP was created by a law signed by President Ronald Reagan in the year 1984, the year for which Orwell had named his dystopian novel back in 1948, when the U.S. Department of War had just been renamed the Department of Defense, and its mission of offensive war-making had been clearly announced to observers fluent in doublespeak.

Support Rev. Pinkney, Send Letters To Court Of Appeals NOW!

By Black Autonomy Network Community Organization - On August 4th, a 3-judge panel of the Michigan Court of Appeals in District III (Grand Rapids) issued a 2-1 decision denying Rev. Edward Pinkney bond pending appeal. This outrageous decision by two of the judges keeps Rev. Pinkney locked behind bars for even longer than the 8 months he's already served. The entire appeals process could take many months more. The ACLU of Michigan wrote in a brief supporting bond pending appeal that the trial court conviction against Rev. Pinkney is “almost certain” to be reversed on appeal. That means he's “paying a debt to society” he doesn't owe. We know that the Berrien County trial court is a corrupt and racist institution.

Mass Incarceration Vs Rural Appalachia

By Panagioti Tsolkas in the EarthFirst! Journal. Letcher County, KY - The United States Bureau of Prisons is trying to build a new, massive maximum-security prison in the Appalachian mountains of eastern Kentucky — and there’s a growing movement to stop it. The prison industry in the US has grown in leaps and bounds in the past 20 years— a new prison was built at an average rate of one every two weeks in the ’90s, almost entirely in rural communities. As of 2002, there were already more prisoners in this country than farmers. The industry seems like an unstoppable machine, plowing forward at breakneck speed on the path that made the world’s largest prison population.

Join The Fight To Save Dyett High School

By Staff of Popular Resistance. Chicago, IL - The attack on Dyett is representative of what is happening to public education and school across the country. These resisters are on the front line of saving the human right to education. We hope you will take a moment to support them. 2 Parents, grandparents, community members and supporters from around the city started a hunger strike on August, 17th. Their demand is simple. Rahm Emanuel and his appointed school board needs to follow the community's wishes and use the now shuttered Dyett High School Building at 555E 51st St. for the innovative, academically excellent and culturally connected Dyett Global Leadership and Green Technology High School.

Don’t Hold Us Back From Fair Development!

By Free Your Voice in Vimeo - Check out this powerful new video featuring students, business owners, faith leaders calling for community driven positive alternatives to the incinerator. After the video, sign our petition unitedworkers.org/stop_the_incinerator calling on Maryland Department of the Environment to enforce the law and support our push for Fair Development. Like many communities, we find ourselves in a basic struggle for survival in which our health is sacrificed and the very air we breathe is made toxic by failed development. In such times we must come together to use our creativity and collective resources to find solutions to the crisis we face. Today, we are proud to share this powerful video calling for community control of the 80 acre site currently being held hostage by Energy Answers' plan to build the nations' largest trash burning incinerator less than a mile from schools in Curtis Bay.
