Elections, A New Leadership And BDS Are Pivotal For Palestine

Ever since President Donald Trump blundered blindly into the Middle East with his woefully inexperienced team of advisors, US foreign policy has swung wildly out of control. Predictably, it has destroyed the already fragile two-state solution as defined by the Oslo Accords. It’s no use pretending that such a solution is still viable. That, though, may not be all bad news for the Palestinians, whose current leadership in Ramallah is incapable of actually leading the people and taking control of the situation. The Palestinians have never worn the cloak of victimhood very well; it is simply not in their DNA to sit back and moan about their suffering which is real, very real. Any reasonable person can see that those who were driven from their homes in 1948 by Zionist terror gangs which became the “Israel Defence Forces”, as well as their descendants, have been treated unjustly.

Launch Of Apartheid Off Campus

Apartheid Off Campus was born officially just over a week ago and it could not have come at a better time, with the new and ever-mounting challenges the Palestinians have had to face. In this 7-day window, AOC acquired over 2000 followers across three social media platforms: Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. AOC has received far-reaching and overwhelming support from students and activists alike, enough to remind us that now is as perfect a time as any to launch an active, dynamic student-led movement for Palestine. After an online-only (courtesy of the lockdown!) student campaign launch, hundreds of students across the UK posted pictures of themselves with placards and posters calling for the decolonization of universities, by ending their complicity with Israeli apartheid and divesting from the companies embroiled in such oppression.

UK Supreme Court Boosts BDS

The UK’s Palestine Solidarity Campaign won what it said was a historic legal victory for the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement on Wednesday. BDS campaigners celebrated as the Supreme Court in London struck out an anti-divestment rule imposed by the government in 2016. As the ruling was made by the UK’s highest court, it cannot be appealed. The Conservative government in September 2016 imposed a new guideline which stopped local authorities using their pension schemes to divest from Israel or any other country – regardless of human rights concerns. The rule stated that councils must not use their pension policies “to pursue boycotts, divestment and sanctions against foreign nations and UK defense industries.” But the Palestine Solidarity Campaign challenged the government, and in 2017 the High Court ruled in its favor.

Washington State Court Of Appeals Upholds BDS

A Washington appeals court has upheld a ruling that dismissed a lawsuit against former board members of the Olympia Food Co-op for the co-op’s decision to boycott Israeli goods. The ruling came yesterday in a case that was originally filed in 2011 by five co-op members, purporting to act on behalf of the co-op and seeking to block the boycott and collect monetary damages against the board members. The case was dismissed five months later as a SLAPP, or Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation, but reinstated when Washington’s anti-SLAPP statute was struck down. The ruling affirmed today dismissed the case a second time.

A Vision For Palestinian Statehood That Is Not Trump’s

We need to move away from the idea of a two-state solution and embrace the vision of one secular, democratic state. It has been almost 15 years since the Boycott, Divestment Sanctions (BDS) movement was launched by the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI). The aim of the campaign is to force Israel and its supporters to recognise that the status quo in Palestinian lands and Israel is not tenable in the long term and that there can be no solution without respect for international law...

Abby Martin Banned From Speaking At US University For Refusing To Sign Pro-Israel Pledge

Since 2014, 28 states, among those Georgia, have adopted anti-boycott laws, including five executive orders issued by governors. Former teleSUR presenter and creator of The Empire Files Abby Martin was blocked from delivering a keynote speech at Georgia Southern University for refusing to "sign a contractual pledge to not boycott Israel" to comply with the anti-Boycott, Divest and Sanctions state law. "After I was scheduled to give a keynote speech at an upcoming Georgia Southern conference, organizers said I must comply with Georgia's anti-BDS law," Martin tweeted on Friday.

The Bi-Partisan War Against The Palestinian Solidarity Movement

On Tuesday, the New York Times reported that President Trump is on the verge of signing an executive order that purportedly cracks down on antisemitism at college campuses. The move would apparently allow the government to withhold funding from schools that failed to effectively crack down on discrimination. Trump’s move is undoubtedly being implemented to strengthen the fight against the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. According to the New York Times report, the government will begin interpreting Judaism as a nationality.

A BDS Campaign Tackles The Sports Industry In Portland — And Wins

Boycotting for Palestinian rights works. A reporter broke the news in late September that the Portland Trail Blazers basketball team ended their partnership with Leupold & Stevens, which makes rifle scopes for Israel’s brutal occupying army, following a year-long protest campaign led by our Portland, Oregon, chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and many allies. For nearly 10 years, Leupold & Stevens sponsored a “Hometown Hero” segment during Blazers games...

US Announces Illegal Israeli Settlements Are No Longer Illegal

The United States' announcement that Israel's settlements in the occupied West Bank are not "inconsistent with international law" has been met with widespread derision and rejection, with one Palestinian leader calling it "a threat to global stability, security, and peace". On Monday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the Trump administration believes "that what we've done today has recognised the reality on the ground", rolling back decades of policy in Washington. "The establishment of Israeli civilian settlements is not, per se, inconsistent with international law," Pompeo told reporters.

Occupied Palestine: From BDS To ODS

We spent the last week in Occupied Palestinian Territory, commonly referred to as Israel, where we traveled around the country to visit communities in Jerusalem, Jaffa, Bethlehem, the West Bank, the Nagab, and more. We call Israel Occupied Palestine because it is not just the West Bank and Gaza that are occupied, but all of historic Palestine,  the entire Palestinian nation. Palestinian people do not have equal rights and their communities are constantly encroached upon by settlers pushing them into small, crowded areas. The mistreatment of Palestinians happens right before the eyes of the Israeli settlers. If they do not see it, it is either because they do not want to see it or because they are encouraged not to see it. Just as Jim Crow racism was evident to all in the southern states of the US, apartheid in Palestine is obvious.

Universities Are Bowing To Israeli Pressure And Treating Protests Of Israel As A Hate-Crime

The Israel lobby in the United States and its counterparts in Europe have been paying particular attention to curtailing the activities of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement (BDS). This is because BDS, which is non-violent and based on established human rights principles, is extremely appealing to college students, who will be tomorrow’s leaders. Israel, which promotes its own largely fictional narrative about itself, is reluctant to allow any competing stories about its foundation and current activities...

Political Upheaval Over Tlaib And Omar Shows The Power Of BDS

We are in the middle of a political upheaval on Israel/Palestine in the United States, and Americans who are concerned with Palestinian human rights live for these moments. They are the moments of potential change: When more tarnish is added to Israel’s image, and Americans get a clearer picture of what the Jewish state actually means for non-Jews under its sovereignty. Since I’ve been covering the issue there have been several such moments. The Israeli assault on Gaza in 2008-09. The Israeli assault on Gaza in 2014. Netanyahu’s showdowns with Obama over settlements, the Iran deal (2011, 2015).

The Global Crackdown On BDS Is Not About Solidarity With Jews

Israeli politics have moved into uncharted territory over the past several months, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu found himself unable to form a coalition large enough to claim victory in last spring’s elections. However, even as the Israeli state enters into political turmoil at home, it is becoming increasingly immune to criticism from the international community abroad. In May, Germany’s government passed an anti-BDS resolution condemning the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement, a nonviolent campaign to protest Israel’s military occupation of Palestine...

US Judge Strikes Down Texas Anti-BDS Law

A US federal judge has struck down a controversial Texas anti-boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) law, saying it violates freedom of speech under the country’s first amendment of the constitution. The judge, Robert Pitman, delivered an injunction to strike down Texas’ law late on Thursday, saying in his opinion that it forces “public debate through coercion rather than persuasion”. The law ran into legal trouble when Bahia Amawi, a speech pathologist, was not allowed to sign a contract extension with Pflugerville independent school district...
