ACLU Of Oklahoma Calls For Criminal Charges Against TPD Officers

By Bryan Newell for ACLU - We call today on law enforcement officers and law enforcement agencies around the state and around the nation to condemn the murderous actions of the Tulsa Police Department. In a world where our government continues to prove how little regard it has for the lives and the dignity of black Americans, to remain silent is to be complicit. It is well past time for the good men and women who serve their communities faithfully to speak out, and condemn this murder of a defenseless black man.”

Oklahoma Officer Fatally Shoots Unarmed Black Man In Alarming Video

By Chris D’Angelo for The Huffington Post - The Tulsa, Oklahoma, police department on Monday released several videos showing last week’s fatal shooting of an unarmed black man by a white female officer. Terence Crutcher, 40, was shot and killed Friday after officers responding to an unrelated call spotted his vehicle stalled in the middle of the roadway, Tulsa World reports. The police department earlier said Crutcher refused orders to put up his hands, but the footage appears to show him walking toward his vehicle with his hands above his head.

Monetary Settlement And More Reached In Sandra Bland Death

By Leon Neyfakh for Slate - In July 2015, the death of Sandra Bland became a central flashpoint in the national debate over race and law enforcement. Bland was pulled over by a Texas state trooper because she didn’t signal a lane change. She was screamed at and threatened with a Taser because she refused to put out her cigarette. Because she couldn’t make bail, she was confined to a Waller County, Texas, jail cell for three days—an experience that evidently caused her so much distress that she hung herself in her cell.

Black Lives Matter Fighting Alongside Dakota Access Pipeline Protesters

By Ashoka Jegroo for Fusion - There’s been growing solidarity between the #BlackLivesMatter and #NoDAPL movements in recent weeks, and activists in New York are looking to strengthen that bond even more. On Aug. 27, Black Lives Matter activists from Minneapolis and Torontotraveled to the Standing Rock Indian Reservation, which straddles North and South Dakota, to support indigenous tribes protesting the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL).

Nine Black Lives Matter Protesters Arrested After City Airport Travel Chaos

By Jamie Grierson, Damien Gayle and Matthew Weaver for The Guardian - Nine activists who said they were from Black Lives Matter UK were arrested on Tuesday after storming the runway at London City airport and chaining themselves together in a six-hour protest that caused severe travel disruption. Dozens of flights were cancelled or rescheduled at the airport, in Newham, east London, as police struggled to remove the group, who erected a wooden tripod on the runway and secured themselves to the structure as well as each other.

In France, Black Lives Matter Has Become A Rallying Cry

By Nabeela Zahir for Aljazeera - Paris, France - Young protesters gathered for a demonstration at Gare Du Nord in the heart of Paris. Amid a heavy police presence, they defiantly chanted "Black Lives Matter" and called for justice following the death of Adama Traore while in police custody. "The French police are killing our brothers, Adama didn't even do anything wrong. He was killed at the hands of the ones who were supposed to protect him," said one demonstrator.

Newsletter: Labor Day Time To Build Worker Power

By Kevin Zeese and Margaret Flowers for Popular Resistance. Private-sector workers who are members of a union have fallen from 1 in 3 workers in the 1950s to about 1 in 20 today. Politics is about power and the loss of organized worker power has meant a loss in political power for all workers and a loss of wealth, income and benefits. In recent years, there have been strong signs that labor is getting more organized and militant in fighting for worker rights. They have linked worker issues to other issues, e.g. racial injustice, climate change and creating stronger communities; and are showing signs of resurrection. Recent years have seen aggressive attacks against workers: pension funds are raided, health benefits are cut or ended, the right to collective bargaining is destroyed and social services are cut. This is dramatic and needs to be reversed.

Filmed Death Of Eric Garner; Now He’s Being Jailed

By Christopher Mathias for The Huffington Post - LAS VEGAS ― Ramsey Orta says he’ll wake up crying sometimes, and he won’t know why. A few days will pass, and suddenly he’ll remember the dream. The one where he’s on that block in Staten Island, on that cool July day, filming a police officer putting his friend Eric Garner into a chokehold. Only this time, Orta feels an arm wrap around his own neck, squeezing tighter and tighter. Until he can’t breathe. “And then it just goes all black,” Orta said.

Black Youth, Single Mothers Are Not Responsible For Systemic Failings

By Charmaine Lang for Rewire - On the day 23-year-old Sylville Smith was killed by a Milwaukee police officer, the city’s mayor, Tom Barrett, pleaded publicly with parents to tell their children to come home and leave protests erupting in the city. In a August 13 press conference, Barrett said: “If you love your son, if you love your daughter, text them, call them, pull them by the ears, and get them home. Get them home right now before more damage is done. Because we don’t want to see more loss of life, we don’t want to see any more injuries.”

By Julia Craven for The Huffington Post - WASHINGTON ― “Don’t offer support” for the “concrete policy positions” of Black Lives Matter protesters, the chief organization charged with electing Democrats to the House of Representatives warned its candidates in an internal memo leaked online on Wednesday. The document was posted online by Guccifer 2.0, a hacker who has claimed to be responsible for the Democratic National Committee email leak.

Mass Outrage Forces Re-Suspension Of Cop Who Killed Philando Castile

By Matt Agorist for The Free Thought Proect - In a blow to the family and friends of Philando Castile, the officer who is responsible for his death, Jeronimo Yanez was allowed to return to work last week. However, his return was met with such a firestorm of complaints, anger, and protests, Yanez was put back on paid administrative leave. After only one week on the job, Yanez is now back at home on paid vacation. On Wednesday afternoon, the city released the following statement explaining the reasoning behind their decision...

Black Family Gets Robbed. Husband Calls Police. Police Shoot Husband.

By Shaun King for New York Daily News - Few cases typify everything that is wrong with gun rights, police brutality and racial profiling like this one. Early Tuesday in Indianapolis, an African-American woman was being carjacked in front of her home in her working class neighborhood. She ran back in the house, told her husband, who is also black, and they called the police to report the robbery. That seemed to be the right and safe thing to do. As the police pulled up, the husband, who was later identified as 48-year-old Carl Williams, opened the garage to their home and was immediately shot in the gut by police.

The Radicalism Of Black Lives Matter

By Martha Biondi for In These Times. Three years have passed since the July 2013 acquittal of George Zimmerman in the killing of Trayvon Martin prompted Oakland, Calif., organizer Alicia Garza to write an anguished Facebook post ending with the words “Black lives matter”—words that would channel an outpouring of outrage on social media. A year later, the police killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., ignited a local rebellion of Black citizenry, and a social movement took shape. That the Ferguson Police Department left Brown’s fatally wounded body on the street for hours encapsulates the disregard for Black suffering that continues to drive protest nationwide. Already, the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement and the violence it exposes feel like a fixture of our media and social landscape, the images jarring and unrelenting

Newsletter: #NoHoneymoon, A Presidency Of Protest

By Kevin Zeese and Margaret Flowers for Popular Resistance. The task of the movement for economic, racial and environmental justice is much bigger than the presidential election. Our job is to build people power to ensure that no matter who is the next president, the people’s voices are heard and our demands are part of the political agenda. We urge organizers and advocates across the nation to begin to plan a campaign beginning in early 2017 and carrying on through the inauguration to ensure that right from the beginning the people’s voices are a dominant narrative. The #NoHoneymoon campaign will take various forms in communities across the country. Talk to your networks of activists and plan what would work best in your community. The creativity and energy that comes from diverse leadership has surprised the nation before and can do so again.

‘A Vision For Black Lives’ Is A Vision For Everyone

By George Lakey for Waging Nonviolence - On August 1, the Movement for Black Lives, with support from dozens of related organizations, issued its vision of a transformed United States that could realize racial justice. The vision is a major step forward in coherence and clarity for a still-young grassroots insurgency, and deserves the attention of allies everywhere. As you would expect from the movement’s origins, the document leads with the need to stop the institutionalized practices and justifications for violence against black people. The writers place black queer women, trans, unemployed and incarcerated youth at the center since those groups are a margin within the marginalized black community.
