COVID-19 Is A Classic Example Of The Dangers Of Putting Profits Over Health

It is unusual for Popular Resistance to cover an issue two weeks in a row but the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is developing rapidly, and there is a lot of misinformation about it. In the US, we are being misinformed by false information from the corporate media. K. J. Noh writes that "Instead of voicing support or encouraging solidarity—'We are Wuhan'—and commending the extraordinary efforts and sacrifices the Chinese have taken to fight a disease that, in the words of epidemiologist Zhong Nanshan, 'all of mankind is facing,' western corporate media have chosen to go all out to criticize and demonize China, sparing no effort to rekindle ugly, racist, orientalist, and dehumanizing tropes, using any perceived or imagined misstep, pretext, and shortcoming to tar China and the Chinese." We are also getting false information from the Trump administration.

Capitalism Is Responsible For The Deaths Of Millions Of People

The United States' corporate media is a well-oiled machine, engineered to effectively distribute misinformation to masses of politically domesticated Americans. Like apex predators, they feast upon the minds of those who are gullible enough to believe anything their pundits spew from their duplicitous mouths. Many of the corporate media talking heads are highly skilled in the art of deception. They regularly champion convenient narratives given to them from various departments within the United States' government. This is routine regardless of the cable network. If the greatest trick the devil ever played was to convince humankind that he didn't exist, then the corporate media's greatest trick may have been convincing Americans that there was a huge difference between the likes of Fox News, MSNBC, CNN, ABC News, and the like.

#Mexico: “We Don’t Give Up and Don’t Give In” Call For Collective Action

As a “Women’s” working group of the CIG, we would like to remember the words of Comandanta Yesica at the end of her closing speech at the Second International Gathering of Women who Struggle held at the caracol “Torbellino de nuestras palabras” in the Zapatista mountains in resistance and rebellion, on December 29, 2019: “One last thing before we finish and close this Second International Gathering of Women who Struggle. It’s regarding time. We know that no matter the day, week, month or year, there will be a woman somewhere in the world who is afraid, attacked, disappeared or killed. We have said before that for women who fight there is no time to rest. Therefore for those of you listening, reading  or watching us, we want to propose a collective action here.

Global Stock Markets Crashing–What’s Next?-Audio

Listen to my analysis of this week’s record collapse of US and global stock markets. What’s the impact on the global and US ‘real’ economy? Is the Recession here? (Globally yes, per Goldman Sachs research announced today).

The U.S. Is World’s Merchant Of Death In Capitalism’s Great Race To the Bottom

Empire is the engine that drives the political economy of the United States. The U.S. empire, like all capitalist states, has as its sole purpose the maintenance of class exploitation. While few on any part of the U.S. political spectrum are willing to say the word, empire is a key concern for a ruling class that is committed to preserving the economic and political supremacy of capitalism in its late and terminal stages.

UN Releases List Of Companies With Ties To Jewish Settlements

Among the companies listed were Airbnb, eDreams, TripAdvisor, and Motorola. The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) issued a report Wednesday listing all the 112 companies with business ties to Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. The report identified 112 firms which it has reasonable grounds to conclude that have ties with illegal Israeli settlements...

Worker Self-Directed Enterprises: The Cure For Capitalism

“Socialism Sucks!” This blatant invective was hurled at me while I stood on a DC metro train reading Richard Wolff’s new book Understanding Socialism. I chuckled a bit, having heard this refrain from InfoWars or Turning Point warriors for years. “I suppose it depends on how you define it…” I began, attempting to use the same argumentative techniques as Wolff does in the pamphlet dangling between my fingers.

A Radical Call To Action

A radical call to action has never been more vital than today, as the abomination of capitalism known as neoliberalism tears apart society from stem to stern, continuing the grand experiment that originated under the watchful eyes and vision of aristocratic plantation-owners like Washington and Jefferson as wealthy patriots.

A Community Fights The County To Show Black Ancestor’s Lives Matter

Clearing the FOG co-hosts Margaret Flowers and Kevin Zeese interviewed Dr. Marsha Coleman Adebayo of the Bethesda African Cemetery Coalition about the struggle in her community to reclaim an African cemetery currently buried under a parking lot. Since discovering the cemetery, residents of Bethesda have uncovered the brutal treatment of Africans who lived there starting with being worked to death on a tobacco plantation that later turned to forced sexual exploitation and breeding for profit. Once they were freed, African residents set up a thriving community that was then taken over through gentrification. It is an amazing story of fortitude for those who lived through it and for the community that is now fighting the county to honor the memory of what happened.

Global Poll Finds Majority Believe Capitalism More Harmful Than Good

A global survey out Monday ahead of the World Economic Forum summit in Davos shows that over half of respondents believe capitalism in its current form does "more harm than good." "Welp, glad that's settled then," mused one Twitter user. The findings are from the 2019 Edelman Trust Barometer, which polled over 34,000 respondents in 28 markets to measure trust in government, business, NGOs, and media. Fifty-six percent of respondents said they agree with statement, "Capitalism as it exists today does more harm than good in the world." That belief was expressed by a majority across age group, gender, and income level divides. In fact, there were just six markets were the majority of respondents did not agree—Australia, Canada, the U.S., South Korea, Hong Kong, and Japan.

Report On The United Nations Climate Meeting: Capitalism Can’t Solve The Climate Crisis

The United Nations Conference of Parties, COP25, climate meetings to continue working on the Paris Climate Agreement ended recently. They took place in Madrid Spain rather than Chile because of popular uprisings against neoliberalism in Chile. We speak with Anne Petermann of the Global Justice Ecology Project. Petermann has been attending the COP meetings since the early 2000's. Her organization chose to stay in Chile. We speak with her about what is going on there and about the COP meetings - whether they are effective or not - and what people need to be doing to deal with the climate crisis effectively. Petermann explains why many of the 'solutions' being put forward are false and harmful paths. We also provide current news and analysis.

Social Ecology: Radicalizing The Climate Movement

It is not up for debate: climate change is the most pressing issue of our time. Aside from the rather obvious fact that we cannot wage any struggle or build any new society in the shell of the old if we are all dead, the struggle for climate justice is a deeply intersectional one that touches on all the other issues we hold dear. Concerned about inequality and the class war? Look at the way the wealthy have already started building walls to protect themselves while the lower classes drown or burn. Concerned about housing as a human right? Millions of houses are in areas that will soon be underwater or in flames will bring the affordable housing crisis to levels we have never seen before. Concerned about migrant justice, racial justice and the violent impacts of the nation-state more broadly?

The Centuries-Long History Of Extractive Greed

Two years after spilling 407,000 gallons of oil in South Dakota, the Keystone Pipeline erupted again. In November, a North Dakota portion of the pipeline leaked another 380,000 gallons – adding to the millions of gallons of crude oil that have spilled from pipelines over the last decade, as Undark has reported.  As the climate crisis worsens, the fossil fuel industry has clearly messaged its apathy by continuing to pollute the planet. But these horrific leaks aren’t simply one-off “incidents.” They reveal a long history of oppression on communities of color and the planet.

Fear Of Potential Transformation From A Corbyn Election

This Thursday the UK will be holding an election where Labour's Jeremy Corbyn is the lead challenger against the Conservative Party's Boris Johnson. Johnson has been leading in the polls throughout the campaign but his lead has been shrinking. The threat of a long-time peace activist and socialist being elected is very threatening to the power structure. There has been an aggressive character assassination and fear-mongering campaign against Corbyn.  US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was caught in a recording saying he would intervene to stop Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Harvesting The Blood Of America’s Poor: The Latest Stage Of Capitalism

For much of the world, donating blood is purely an act of solidarity; a civic duty that the healthy perform to aid others in need. The idea of being paid for such an action would be considered bizarre. But in the United States, it is big business. Indeed, in today’s wretched economy, where around 130 million Americans admit an inability to pay for basic needs like food, housing or healthcare, buying and selling blood is of the few booming industries America has left.
