Fearing Protest, Donald Trump Cancels Trip To Wisconsin

By Sophia Tesfaye for Salon. Threats of protest appear to have scuttled plans for President Trump’s first visit to Wisconsin this week, CNN reported on Tuesday. It would have been Trump’s first visit to the state as president. The 128th Air Refueling Wing, a military airport in Milwaukee, confirmed that it was contacted by Trump’s press team and informed that the president will not be coming to the state Thursday, as previously scheduled. Tech. Sgt. Meghan Skrepenski said the White House did not provide an exact reason for the cancellation; the White House had just confirmed the planned trip on Monday. Trump was expected to tour a Harley Davidson factory where he also planned to sign executive orders related to American manufacturing. But according to an unnamed Trump official, the trip was canceled after Harley Davidson officials expressed concern about the potential for protests.

We Need To Attack Dem Establishment In Front Of Liberals

By Caitlin Johnstone for Newslogue. We need to take away the dominance of political discourse away from liberals. We need to fight it, and fight it hard, because if we don’t we can kiss this whole revolution goodbye. You can’t have a grassroots movement that you’re not allowed to talk about. A progressive revolution cannot possibly coexist with a conspiracy of silence. They are mutually exclusive. How do we fight it? We speak the truth, even when our voice shakes. We publicly share our perspectives, and when our liberal friends close in, we tell them why they’re wrong. We can be polite (if we feel they deserve it), but we must be unyielding. We speak our truth wherever we’re at, whenever we can. The foremost battleground for the progressive awakening is in your own social circles. If we can only speak about this in hushed voices, with a select few woke friends or in secret Facebook groups, then our movement dies here. Kiss it goodbye. So long, farewell, Auf Wiedersehen, goodnight. We will never be more than a fringe movement if we’re not able to openly and directly resist the political establishment.

Newsletter: The Problem Isn’t Trump, It’s Bigger

By Kevin Zeese and Margaret Flowers for Popular Resistance. The awakening of mass protests against Donald Trump’s executive orders and appointments could become a real movement, but it must realize a critically important point: Trump is not the problem, the system is. Illusion of Democracy hides oligarchyTrump is a symptom of a long-term trend of a failing democracy that is too closely tied to Wall Street and the war machine. Both the Republican and Democratic parties are part of this failed system that does not represent the people of the United States. We are all working to build a mass movement for economic, racial and environmental justice that is bigger than Donald Trump. As the extremist actions of the Trump administration are put in place we need to remember that extremism for the wealthy, for war and ignoring of environmental catastrophe is consistent with the actions of all recent presidents and the leadership of both corporate parties.

Why Anti-Trump Movement Should Not Initiate Violence

By Michael Steven Smith for The Indypendent - It's fair to say Donald Trump is absolutely bonkers. And his cabinet of billionaires, multi-millionaires, and generals is frightful. He could've got a better cabinet at IKEA. As Gloria Steinem told the assembled half-million demonstrators at the Women's March in Washington, DC, "he found a fox for every chicken coop. " But dangerous times are also times of great opportunity. On the 100th anniversary of the historic Russian revolution of 1917 it is worth recalling that Lenin thought that if the Russian people didn't rise up and make a revolution by overthrowing the feudal czar, withdrawing from World War I, redistributing the land to the people that worked it, and having the people take over their own economy, that if this failed, then fascism would surely triumph.

Anti-Fascist Activists Take On Trump And Far Right: ‘Resistance Is Our Only Shot’

By Julia Carrie Wong and Sam Levin for The Guardian - More than 1,000 people were shouting “Shut it down” outside the University of California, Berkeley venue where Milo Yiannopoulos planned to speak on Wednesday when a group of black-clad, masked protesters carryings flags and shields arrived to put those words into action. The band of about 150 anti-fascist activists – or antifas – quickly and efficiently stormed the multilayered police barricades that kept the crowd away from the entrances of the Martin Luther King Jr student union. Sequined pink flags were revealed to be mounted on fireworks, which were launched at the building. Others smashed windows with the now vanquished police barricades.

Review Of The DisruptJ20 Inaugural Protests

By Staff of DisruptJ20 - First, let us go over the numbers. Our paid staff consisted of a whopping grand total of zero people. Contrary to what the right wing blogs have been saying, no one got paid. No, none of the central organizers, those who were a part of the “DC Counter-Inaugural Welcoming Committee,” were paid by George Soros or anyone else. The DC Counter-Inaugural Welcoming Committee consisted of a core group of 17 DC organizers who have been working together for five to 10 years. This core group of 17 folks built our digital footprint, created our messaging, liaised with the press, built an action structure, managed our budget, raised funds, managed volunteers, worked with numerous partner organizations, and so much more.

What Will Happen If Activists Stage A Nationwide Strike Against Trump?

By Eric Lutz for Mic - A general strike is an organized work stoppage by a large number of employees across a broad spectrum of industries in an effort to advance a political or economic goal. More common in Europe than in the United States, the general strike has its roots in the British working class movement of the mid-1800s; one of the first major general strikes in the United Kingdom occurred in 1842, when unionists and Chartists led a massive strike for better wages and political reform. About 500,000 workers across Britain participated in the strike, which staved off proposed wage cuts and improved working conditions in most factories.

Situational Assessment 2017: Trump Edition

By Jordan Greenhall for Medium - While many things have changed in the world in the past two years, 2016 saw what looks like a phase transition in the political domain. While the overall phenomenon is global in scale and includes Brexit and other movements throughout Europe, I want to focus specifically on the victory of the “Trump Insurgency” and drill down into detail on how this state change will play out. I use John Robb’s term “Trump Insurgency” here to highlight the fact that the election of 2016 was not an example of “ordinary politics”. Anyone who fails to understand this is going to be making significant errors. For example, the 2016 election is not comparable to the 2000 election (e.g., merely a “close” election) nor to the 1980 election

Donald Trump, Stephen Bannon And Coming Crisis In The US

By David Kaiser for Time - Though their theory is not widely taught in colleges or discussed in the media, Strauss and Howe may well play a major role in Donald Trump's administration. Stephen Bannon, the former head of Breitbart News who has been appointed Trump’s chief strategist in the White House, is very familiar with Strauss and Howe’s theory of crisis, and has been thinking about how to use it to achieve particular goals for quite a while. I know this because Bannon interviewed both Neil Howe and myself in 2009 while he was making a documentary film about the ongoing financial crisis. The film, called Generation Zero, discussed those ideas in some detail.

Federal Employees Turn To Encryption To Privately Discuss New Boss Trump

By Kate Cox for Consumerist - Every new President brings a wave of change to D.C., but the first two weeks of the Trump administration have been busier and more controversial than usual — to put it very mildly. While much attention has been paid to the public response to the White House’s newest tenant, there are federal employees who can’t be so vocal about their concerns, particularly when chatting over government-supplied devices. That’s why some federal staffers are turning to new encryption technologies to keep their discussions away from unwanted scrutiny. Politico reports today that across agencies, some federal employees are seriously stepping up their tech security game.

Donald Trump’s Old Deal For Black America

By Jessica Levy for Black Perspectives - On January 20, 2017, the world watched—many in horror—as Donald Trump was officially sworn in as the forty-fifth president of the United States of America. The president’s inaugural address, delivered in front of the whitest Inauguration Day audience in decades, bore the distinct mark of a man whose campaign played on the racist, sexist, Islamophobic, homophobic, and transphobic fears of white America. The moment included the President making thinly veiled references to “the civilized world” and “a new national pride.” Still, when confronted with charges of bigotry, Trump and his allies have insisted this revolution will serve all Americans.

Reuters Grapples With Covering Trump While Administration Attacks News

By Steve Adler for Reuters - The first 12 days of the Trump presidency (yes, that’s all it’s been!) have been memorable for all – and especially challenging for us in the news business. It’s not every day that a U.S. president calls journalists “among the most dishonest human beings on earth” or that his chief strategist dubs the media “the opposition party.” It’s hardly surprising that the air is thick with questions and theories about how to cover the new Administration. So what is the Reuters answer? To oppose the administration? To appease it? To boycott its briefings? To use our platform to rally support for the media?

Trump’s Antics Are Triggering An Army Of First-Time Protesters

By Sarah Ruiz-Grossman for The Huffington Post - “I went to my first protest march in Miami on Inauguration Day. Before then, my depression and anxiety had prevented me from going out and protesting, but now that I’m 18, I’ve got it under control. My father is an immigrant, and being a person of color, under the LGBTQ umbrella, I feel like it’s my duty to go out there. “There were black and brown women there, and there were also white women ― a few of them pushed me trying to get to the front of the line with their signs. I think we should all learn to listen to other people who don’t have the same struggles as us, and white women should really look out for women of color.” ― Kayla Alamilla

March On Chuck Schumer’s House Demands He Resist Trump’s Agenda

By Hayley Miller for The Huffington Post - Hundreds of people protesting President Donald Trump’s Cabinet picks marched on Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s Brooklyn, New York, home Tuesday night, demanding he fight the nominations. As protests against Trump and his policies sweep the nation, activists took to the streets in front of 9 Prospect Park West, the apartment building where Schumer lives in the upscale neighborhood of Park Slope. Demonstrators chanted, “Chuck! Chuck! Don’t sell us out! We need a fighter to knock Trump out!” and, “No hate! No fear! Refugees are welcome here!” as they marched toward Schumer’s house. Schumer, the top-ranking Senate Democrat, has been an outspoken opponent to many of Trump’s picks for the new administration.
