For nearly four decades, the two agencies that enforce the antitrust laws, the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission, have given corporations like Walmart a free hand to use their size and financial might to consolidate markets. This lax approach was supposed to generate widespread benefits for Americans. Instead, it has left a remarkable number of places without a competitive market for even the most basic of daily needs.

Over the last year, President Trump has taken farmers on a roller coaster ride that’s finally gone off the rails. Escalating trade fights have kicked farmers, already mired in a five-year slump, in the gut. Now, the administration is working up a new trade aid package, while simultaneously opposing aid for farmers recovering from recent Midwest flooding. What’s going on? Just in the last few weeks, Trump tweeted a dramatic escalation in new tariffs on China, which immediately announced an escalation of tariffs on U.S. goods, including agriculture products.

US Economic War On Venezuela Targets CLAP Food Program Relied On By Millions

CARACAS, VENEZUELA — The U.S. government is preparing to levy sanctions against officials associated with Venezuela’s food subsidy program known as CLAP, the latest in a long list of unilateral coercive measures against the country. The new sanctions follow a report by the Center for Economic Policy Research, which stated that 40,000 Venezuelans have died because of sanctions imposed by the Trump administration that prevent life-saving medicines and food from getting into the country.

Largest Private Sector Strike In Years – At Supermarkets Across Northeast

More than 30,000 grocery store employees in the northeastern US are refusing to return to work for the second day in a row. Cashiers and deli workers at Stop & Shop supermarkets walked off the job Thursday afternoon at 240 stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island, saying the supermarket chain is trying to slash their pay by hiking health insurance premiums and lowering pension benefits for new employees. The workers have been negotiating new jobs contracts with the company since January, according to their labor unions, which are part of the United Food & Commercial Workers Union International.

French Court Finds Monsanto Guilty Of Chemical Poisoning

In appeals court in Lyon, France has upheld a 2012 ruling against Monsanto, in which the agribusiness giant was found guilty of the chemical poisoning a farmer named Paul François. The grain grower said that in 2004 he became ill due to Monsanto’s weedkiller, Lasso. François claimed he suffered from neurological problems, memory loss, headaches and stammering after inadvertently inhaling the herbicide. In François’ case, doctors determined the cause of his ill health was monochlorobenzene, a highly toxic substance that made up 50 percent of Monsanto’s herbicide, according to teleSUR.

US Senate Fails To Restore Food Assistance For Puerto Rico

Since a factional battle broke out between Democratic and Republican parties last weekend, the US Senate has failed to pass a disaster relief bill that allocates federal money to recovery projects in all areas of the country recently affected by fires, floods, tropical storms and other natural disasters. The failure to approve this funding has left more than a million Puerto Ricans with drastically-reduced food stamp payments, one year and seven months after Hurricanes Maria and Irma struck the US territory.

Victory! Boston Challenges Corporate Control Of Our Food System

Boston has taken a critical step forward to rebuild our broken food system and advance food justice across the city. On March 20, the city became the first on the East Coast to adopt a city-wide Good Food Purchasing Policy (GFPP) — a groundbreaking policy that helps build an equitable, local, sustainable food system. The policy directs the city to purchase food that meets robust labor, health, and environmental standards. This includes Boston Public Schools (BPS), one of the largest purchasers of food in the city — meaning that 56,000 schoolchildren in Boston will have healthier, more nutritious food available to them at school each day.

A Walk Through The Barrio, Catia, In Caracas, Venezuela

Today I went to Catia the biggest barrio in West Caracas with a population of 1.5 million. An amazing cultural trait that I've noticed in Venezuela is the way people walk up to me with no introduction and make political declarations. The 'CLAP; are government-subsidized food bags, which are up to 90% cheaper than market value and have been a lifeline for so many due to hyper inflation. The delivery and distribution is a true community effort and was a pleasure to witness and like so many community actions, women are at the forefront. The support for the government was undeniable. I provocatively asked one of the women, "Wouldn't live [sic] be easier if the opposition came into power, sanctions would be lifted and life would be less harsh." She cried in my face and explained that for her, the Washington-aligned opposition was the problem.

‘Life Calm In Caracas, People Prepared For More Struggle’

Our delegation made a short video today to talk about the situation of the people we have seen here in which everyone said that life in Caracas is going on. People were eating ice cream in the street. No one looked skinny, let alone starving, and people were treating each other with respect.  The danger that still exists, as Eva Bartlett pointed out, is from the continued threats and actions by the U.S. government that disrupt Venezuelan society, plus the threat of military intervention. The people here are preparing for the next U.S. attack through their community councils, which are telling them to start storing food, water and batteries.

A handful of new reports emphasize that climate change and the world's worsening health are urgent, intertwined crises. One of them calls for an international treaty to address the problem. A scientific study published last month also shows how "food production shocks" linked to climate change have been rising globally, putting food security at risk.
