Pentagon Demands Iraq Dismantle Resistance Factions, Iran Responds

Washington has demanded that Iraq disarm and dismantle Shia resistance factions in the country, the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar reported on 21 March. US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth issued the demand to Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani during a phone call last Sunday, The source stressed that “this issue is of special interest to the administration of [US] President Donald Trump.” Sudani informed the US side that his government is working to address this issue through ongoing dialogue with the armed factions, known collectively as the Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI), the source added.

Shipping Giant Maersk Votes Against Ceasing Arms Shipments To Israel

Danish shipping company Maersk, responsible for transporting hundreds of millions of dollars worth of weapons to Israel since October 7, 2023, voted on Tuesday in its annual general shareholder meeting against resolutions that would have halted arms shipments to Israel. The vote comes in the wake of Israel’s resumption of the genocide in Gaza. The day of the vote was also marked with a wave of global protest, as part of a day of action called by the the international “Mask off Maersk” campaign launched by the Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM), with the intent of continuing to put pressure on the shipping giant to cease its role in Israeli genocide.

The Israeli defense minister is simply following Trump’s position and reiterating what everyone who isn’t a blinkered partisan hack knew Trump was saying two weeks ago. He is doing this in exactly the same way Benjamin Netanyahu followed Trump’s position on ethnically cleansing Gaza last month by enthusiastically endorsing the plan Trump put forward to permanently remove all Palestinians from the enclave. Trump puts forward the plan, and Israeli officials put it into action. So you’ve got both the U.S. and Israeli governments openly threatening the entire population of the Gaza strip with the war crime of collective punishment if they don’t somehow kick Hamas out of Gaza, and additionally announcing the intent to inflict “total devastation” upon that population if they do not.

I was the Deputy chief of mission at the US Embassy in Ulaan Baatar, Mongolia and the third U.S. government employee to resign in opposition to the U.S. war on Iraq.  I resigned on the day the Bush administration began the 10-year U.S. war on Iraq, March 19, 2003.  President Bush, like the presidents before and after him, lied. His specific lie was about the reason for the U.S. to attack and kill hundreds of thousands of Iraqis.  In 2003, Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Powell’s lie was about Iraq having weapons of mass destruction when international weapons inspectors were very clear in their statements that after their exhaustive investigation there were no weapons of mass destruction.

Israel killed more than 400 Palestinians, including over 100 children, in one of the bloodiest bombardments of the Gaza Strip early on Tuesday, unilaterally ending its ceasefire with Hamas. Air strikes began hitting all five Gaza municipalities from north to south at around 3am local time (12am GMT) on the 18th day of the holy month of Ramadan. Footage broadcast by Al Jazeera showed children and babies among those killed and wounded. At least 413 people were killed and 660 wounded, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

At least 53 people, including a number of women and children, were killed and dozens of others injured in a series of airstrikes launched by the US on multiple locations across Yemen on Saturday, March 15, according to Yemen’s Health Ministry. The US aggression was launched on the order of President Donald Trump, who announced via his Truth Social account on Saturday, that it aimed at “protecting US shipping, air, and naval assets and to restore navigation freedom” from Ansar Allah’s attacks. “Our brave Warfighters are right now carrying out aerial attacks on the terrorists’ bases, leaders, and missile defenses to protect American shipping, air, and naval assets, and to restore Navigational Freedom,” Trump’s post reads.

A new report released by the UN’s Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory accuses Israel of systematically employing sexual, reproductive, and gender-based violence against Palestinians during its assault on Gaza. The findings, presented alongside public hearings in Geneva, also highlight the systematic destruction of reproductive healthcare facilities in Gaza and describe a “broader strategy to undermine Palestinian self-determination.” The report finds that Israel’s conduct has amounted to carrying out “genocidal acts” under international law, in addition to war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The US Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights (OCR) said it is investigating 60 universities for anti-Semitism, and that they are receiving warnings due to allegedly not protecting Jewish students during mass anti-Israel rallies in American universities and colleges. “The Department is deeply disappointed that Jewish students studying on elite US campuses continue to fear for their safety amid the relentless anti-Semitic eruptions that have severely disrupted campus life for more than a year. The Yemeni Armed Forces (YAF) has reimposed a naval blockade on Israeli-linked ships in the Red Sea, Arab Sea, Bab al-Mandab Strait, and the Gulf of Aden. In a statement released late on 11 March, the YAF said the move comes “after the expiry of the specified period of the deadline issued by Sayyid Abdul Malik Badr al-Din al-Houthi, may God protect him, to the mediators to push and pressure the Israeli enemy to reopen the crossings and bring aid into the Gaza Strip.” “In view of the inability of the mediators to achieve this, the [YAF] confirms” the resumption of “the ban on the passage of all Israeli ships in the designated operational area of ​​the Red and Arabian Seas, as well as Bab al-Mandab and the Gulf of Aden,” the Yemeni army statement said.

Instead, Biden came up with a convoluted three-stage plan that contained every opportunity for either side to sabotage it, and Trump ran with it. Hamas, of course, has no reason to sabotage the agreement. The Israeli genocide has essentially leveled most of Gaza, the people are suffering immensely, and Hamas has nothing to gain but still has something to lose by the genocide continuing.

Columbia University Cracks Down On Pro-Palestine Student Activists

Students at Columbia University who expressed opposition to the US–Israeli genocide of Palestinians in Gaza are being investigated by a secretive disciplinary body known as the Office of Institutional Equity (OIE), which is targeting anyone involved in activities ranging from sharing social media posts supporting Palestinians to participating in “unauthorized” protests. Drop Site News reports that Columbia requires students under investigation for “discrimination based on their speech” to sign a non-disclosure agreement to access unredacted evidence against them, effectively blocking public discussion of the accusations and process.

Arab Leaders Endorse Egypt’s $53bn Plan For Gaza Reconstruction

An Arab summit convened in Cairo on 4 March adopted an Egyptian plan for the reconstruction of Gaza in a bid to counter US President Donald Trump's proposal to forcibly expel Palestinians from the strip while turning it into a “Middle East Riviera” for Israel's Jewish settlers. The final statement from the summit called for finding a realistic alternative to the displacement of the Palestinian people and, before that, the categorical rejection of their displacement from their land or within it. It also condemned the “starvation and scorched earth policies” pursued by Israel to forcibly displace Palestinians and stressed the importance of implementing the second and third stages of the Gaza ceasefire agreement, which call for a complete Israeli withdrawal from the strip.

Israel Continues Sabotage Of Ceasefire Deal With Suspension Of Aid To Gaza

The ceasefire in Gaza came closest to collapsing since it began in mid-January after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Israel’s halt of the entry of humanitarian aid into the strip. The first phase of the ceasefire deal came to an end on Sunday as Israel continued to refuse to begin negotiations over the second phase of the deal, which were supposed to commence in early February. Throughout the 42 days of the first phase of the ceasefire, Israel systematically violated the terms of the deal by delaying the delivery of humanitarian aid, heavy machinery for reconstruction, and prefabricated mobile homes, while continuing to periodically open fire on and kill Palestinian civilians in Gaza and obstruct the return of the displaced to their homes.
