The UN Security Council passed a resolution on Monday calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, almost six months after Israel’s assault on the Strip began.   The resolution was adopted after the U.S. abstained, in a marked shift from its previous positions, where it had vetoed three ceasefire resolution attempts in the past months. Last week, Russia and China vetoed a proposed ceasefire resolution presented by the U.S. The resolution called for the unconditional release of the remaining Israeli captives in the Gaza Strip as a precondition for the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza.

The Israeli military has imposed ongoing sieges on at least three medical facilities in the besieged enclave, terrorizing, injuring, and killing thousands of civilians in the process.  Al-Shifa Hospital in northern Gaza has entered its seventh day under siege, and the civilians able to flee are reporting ruthless massacres in and around the medical complex.  A teenage Palestinian boy, Farouk Mohammed Hamd, told Al Jazeera he witnessed Israeli soldiers executing a group of eight people, including his father and brother, inside al-Shifa Hospital.

PEN America Self-Destructs

PEN America, once an important defender of rights for writers, editors and artists, has, under the direction of former State Department official Suzanne Nossel, abandoned its mission, destroyed its credibility and provoked a revolt among its members.  Its refusal to condemn the genocide in Gaza and Israel’s targeted killings of writers, academics and journalists, has seen numerous writers withdraw from the annual PEN World Voices Festival in New York and Los Angeles, scheduled for April and May. PEN America has not only failed to denouce the genocide but provides platforms to Israelis who use racist and dehumanizing language to describe Palestinians.

Russia And China Veto US Resolution On Gaza

Russia and China vetoed a US-authored resolution in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on March 22 on the situation in Gaza. The text “determines the imperative for an immediate and sustained ceasefire” stopping short of an explicit call for a halt to Israel’s six-month long attack on besieged Gaza that has killed almost 32,000 Palestinians. The US authored the resolution after vetoing three successive UNSC resolutions on Gaza, including a February 20 resolution presented by Algeria that had called for an immediate ceasefire.

UE Demand For Ceasefire Built On Decades Of Education And Debate

Unions representing more than half of the U.S. labor movement have now called for a ceasefire in Gaza, as has the AFL-CIO and some 70 city councils—the result of actions by many local and international unions and rank-and-file activists. Our union, the United Electrical, Radio & Machine Workers of America (UE), was able to mobilize quickly on this critical issue because we have a strong tradition of international solidarity and taking a critical view of U.S. foreign policy. When Israel launched its brutal assault on the people of Palestine in the wake of the unconscionable Hamas attack of October 7, the UE leadership recognized that this was an issue that the labor movement had to take action on.

Arab Countries Ask Israel To Open All Crossings With Gaza

After meeting the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Cairo on Thursday March 21, foreign ministers of five Arab countries issued a joint statement on Friday asking Israel to open all its border crossings with Gaza to allow for an increase in humanitarian aid to the besieged Palestinian territory. The foreign ministers of Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates also called for a “comprehensive and immediate ceasefire” and faster aid delivery to “address the dire needs of over two million Palestinians facing famine.” There are six border crossings between Gaza and Israel.

When the foreign policy of a country as large and significant as the United States is governed by a case of cognitive dissonance, terrible things happen.  These terrible things are, in fact, already taking place in the Gaza Strip, where well over 100,000 people have been killed, wounded or are missing, and an outright famine is currently ravaging the displaced population.  From the start of the war on Oct. 7, the U.S. mishandled the situation, although recent reports indicate that Biden, despite his old age, has read the overall meaning of the Oct. 7 events correctly.

Israeli forces bombed a gathering point of dozens of Palestinians near the Kuwait roundabout in Gaza City, killing at least 23 people and injuring dozens on Tuesday evening. Most of them were members of Palestinian clans and officers of Gaza’s emergency committee who handled aid supplies and deliveries to starving people in north Gaza. Since Saturday, they had successfully ensured the arrival of 35 aid trucks at the Kuwait and Nabulsi roundabouts, unloading the deliveries in shelters and centers of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) in Gaza’s Al-Tuffah neighborhood and Jabalia refugee camp.

Israel has requested the International Court of Justice (ICJ) not to issue emergency orders for it to increase humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, describing South Africa’s request to do so as “morally repugnant”. In a legal filing to the Court made public on Monday, Israel accused South Africa of abusing both the Genocide Convention and the Court itself. “Much like South Africa’s Application that instituted the present proceedings, they are wholly unfounded in fact and law, morally repugnant, and represent an abuse both of the Genocide Convention and of the Court itself,” the filing said.

On March 17, the International Coalition to Stop Genocide in Palestine (ICSGP) held its first Global Call to Action as a webinar simultaneously translated into five languages. The goals of the meeting were to share ways that groups are working to build public support for an end to Israel's genocidal acts, provide humanitarian aid to Palestinians and amplify the global anti-colonial, anti-imperial movement. The ICSGP convened in late December, 2023 to push for Israel to be held accountable under the Genocide Convention for its acts in Palestine.

The Palestinian Authority (PA) warned that Israel has started an offensive on Rafah without an official announcement to avoid international pressure. Overnight, Israel heavily bombed Rafah, killing at least 14 Palestinians in the area where more than one million people are displaced, the majority of them living in tents. “Israel began to destroy Rafah on a daily basis and in a systematic manner through repeated attacks on homes, bombing them, and killing and wounding dozens of civilians,” the PA’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Tuesday.

Piers allow things to come in. They allow things to go out. And Israel, which has no intention of halting its murderous siege of Gaza, including its policy of enforced starvation, appears to have found a solution to its problem of where to expel the 2.3 million Palestinians. If the Arab world will not take them, as Secretary of State Antony Blinken proposed during his first round of visits after Oct. 7, the Palestinians will be cast adrift on ships. It worked in Beirut in 1982 when some eight and a half thousand Palestine Liberation Organization members were sent by sea to Tunisia and another two and a half thousand ended up in other Arab states.

Campaigners Are Planning A Tax-Strike For Gaza

The No Tax for Genocide campaign, which launched on Thursday, wants 100,000 people to pledge to withhold income and council tax. The group estimates this could deprive the Treasury of £700m in a year. Inspired by the Don’t Pay campaign, which may have forced the government to freeze energy prices in 2022 by threatening a strike, the group claims that paying taxes to the British government amounts to aiding and abetting genocide, and could be illegal under international law. Withholding tax, on the other hand, could be legal under certain circumstances, it claims.

In the early hours of Monday morning, Israeli forces stormed al-Shifa Hospital in northern Gaza with tanks and heavy gunfire. There have already been a “number of martyrs and wounded” in the ongoing Israeli onslaught, which began around 2:00 a.m. Gaza’s Ministry of Health said about 30,000 people, including displaced civilians, wounded patients, and medical staff, are trapped inside the complex. Sniper bullets and quadcopters target anyone who tries to move. A fire also broke out at the entrance to the hospital, and cases of suffocation occurred among the displaced women and children inside.

Five Arrested In Gaza Arms Shipment Protest At Travis Air Force Base

Five people were arrested for blocking the north entrance to Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield while protesting Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza on Thursday morning. Eight protesters stretched a banner across the narrow two lane road at about 9:00 a.m., holding back a line of commuters headed to the base that grew quickly with the morning traffic. “Travis Air Force Base is providing transport planes to bring weapons to Israel,” said protester Fred Bialy, one of the five who was arrested for blocking the road. “I feel it’s important to alert people who work at Travis so they know that the base is facilitating a genocide of people in Gaza by transporting those weapons.”
