Fear-mongering Over National Security Law Unfounded

"If it makes any fuss on Hong Kong's unique linked exchange rate regime which ensures its monetary base is backed with US dollars, how big would the US lose when global investors lose faith in US-denominated assets, which are considered as lifeline for the US economy," Lui said.  When it comes to the new national security law, China's top legislators are committed to pushing forward it smoothly, in spite of how hard foreign forces have been trying to pressure China on the matter. The US should not underestimate the central government's determination in defending its sovereignty and national security, some observers said, like what it did in protecting both financial market security in Hong Kong and the mainland two decades ago.

Is Hong Kong US Or Chinese Territory?

Blatant interference by the US is prompting Beijing’s new legislation to protect national security. Now, the very people who brought all this upon us are having conniptions over what it means for our basic freedoms and fundamentals, which the government is insisting will remain untouched. When did this city become a major territory of the United States of America? Hong Kong has long been the Achilles’ heel for China in its new Cold War with the US. Smelling blood in the water, certain Western media outlets are in a feeding frenzy of sensational reports and apocalyptic headlines chronicling the “end/death of Hong Kong."

Police Suspect Hospital Bomb Linked To Hong Kong Protests, As Telegram Message Warns Of ‘More To Come’ And Demands Border Closure Amid Wuhan Virus Crisis

Hong Kong police are investigating whether a bomb explosion at a public hospital on Monday is linked to anti-government protest violence, according to sources, suspecting the home-made device may have been detonated to pressure the government into closing the city’s borders with mainland China in response to the deadly new coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan.

How The Murder Of Iranian Commander Connected To HK

Hong Kong rioters would like to believe that they are unique, and that the West has handpicked them — them alone — for what it identifies as the “noble fight for democracy”, and for “Western values”. The problem is that Hong Kong, which likes to promote itself as “Asia’s World City” — at least that is what the advertisements and billboards used to shout, till recently — is actually very far from being global, cosmopolitan, or internationalist.

Hong Kong Police Facing Invisible, Dangerous Enemies

It's much more than what you're allowed to see. Hong Kong's police force is heroically fighting both rioters and a complex and extremely dangerous international network aimed at destabilizing the People's Republic of China. I've never seen such cynicism before and such a vulgar media setup as in Hong Kong. I'm talking in general, and also about what happened on Dec 22. Rioters, waving blue Uyghur, Taiwan, British and US flags, were shouting "independence" and "China is terrorist" slogans in the middle of the city...

Xi Warns Trump Against US Meddling In China’s Affairs

Chinese President Xi Jinping has warned his US counterpart Donald Trump against meddling into Beijing’s internal affairs, saying that Washington’s actions were harming “mutual trust” and cooperation, such as they are. The two leaders held phone talks on Friday, and provided markedly different accounts of them. Trump used Twitter, his medium of choice for the affairs of state, to brag about having a “very good talk” with Xi about their “giant Trade Deal” in the making. Xi was more traditional about it, releasing a statement through the state news agency Xinhua. His readout, however, focused on a less pleasant part of the discussion, in which he told Trump about his concerns with US behavior and repeated interference into the internal affairs of China which Beijing found harmful.

Hong Kong Protests Evolve From Violent To Terrorist

While this great revolution of our times has removed Hong Kong’s bragging rights as one of the safest cities in the world, the security situation has not been deemed alarming enough for people to have to be dragged through metal detectors and frisked by security guards when entering shopping centres, cinema halls, train stations, and other vulnerable public venues. In the past, I have often contemplated how easy it would be for the terroristically inclined to set off bombs pretty much anywhere, in such a trusting and open society, but always perished the thought. Not in Hong Kong. Not by Hongkongers. I hate to report I’m not so sure any more these days, now that the revolutionaries have taken to building homemade bombs packed with high explosives and shrapnel.

Hong Kong Reporters Injured At Protests – In France

It’s always good for reporters to have a chance to work overseas, even if it’s just on a temporary assignment. It broadens your professional experience and mental horizon. Sadly, reporting duties sometimes come with a price. Of the six reporters sent by Hong Kong Golden, an online forum, to cover the nationwide protests in France, four have been injured just days after arrival. Two were reportedly injured by sting grenades used by French anti-riot police; one was allegedly pepper-sprayed and then kicked by an officer; and another suffered a sprain while running away from a protest scene.

US-China Trade War In Jeopardy Over Uyghur And Hong Kong Support

The Uyghur people are an ethnic group of Muslims in western China and they speak the ancient Turkic language, which is the root of the modern Turkish language. Their province is Xinjiang, and their capital city is Urumqi. China is a huge country, and to keep peace and harmony all ethnicities work together, and while respecting each other’s rights, they live as one people, like America. Recently, both US President Trump and the US House have made dramatic accusations against the Chinese government on sensitive domestic policies involving counter-terrorism measures and domestic safety issues.

With People In The Streets Worldwide, Media Focus Uniquely On Hong Kong

US corporate media have been disproportionately interested in only one: the Hong Kong protests. As FAIR argued previously (FAIR.org, 10/26/19), this disparity in coverage can largely be explained by understanding who is protesting and what they are protesting against. The unrest in Hong Kong flared up in March in response to a proposed extradition treaty between the island city, the Chinese central government and Taiwan, which many residents feared would be used by Beijing authorities to arrest and persecute opponents of the Chinese state. Thus, the target of Hong Kong’s protesting is an official enemy of the US, hence the extent and favorability of the coverage.

U.S. Is Using Hong Kong For A Shakedown

The United States government just officially crowned itself as a shakedown artist. The passage and signing of Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act and Placing Restrictions on Teargas Exports and Crowd-control Technology to Hong Kong Act have gone beyond mere interference in domestic affairs. Maybe U.S. politicians don't realize it, or maybe they just don't care anymore, but this bill has removed all façade that the United States have put up. It isn't designed to protect Hong Kong residents' "freedom" and "human rights" as Congress claims it to be.

Hong Kong Citizens Take Back Their City

It started in an unlikely way. About 50 soldiers from the Kowloon Tong garrison of the PLA, unarmed and clad in T-shirts and shorts, walked out of their barracks on Saturday (16) afternoon on Renfrew Rd and started clearing debris and wreckage left by rioting freedom-loving, democratic students. The effect was electric! In minutes local residents, fed up with being held hostage by student mobs, joined in; by five in the afternoon all roads in the vicinity were clear, people were walking to shops, stations, doctor’s appointments and traffic flow was smooth.

A Deeper Look At Uprisings Around The World

Revolts are arising all around the world and it can be hard to keep track of them. We speak with Andre Vltchek, a photographer, writer and documentarian who travels all over to cover world events. He brings a deeper understanding of the conditions that have given rise to the protests, the historical context of those conditions and outside forces that may be influencing them. We discuss Lebanon, a very complex situation where basic social services have broken down but there are also western interests; Hong Kong, China, and the Uyghurs, which are completely propagandized in the United States; and Chile, where people are facing violent state repression and a deeply neoliberal government that has existed since the US-led coup by General Pinochet in 1973. Vltchek provides incredible insights and information.

Why Is The Media Covering Protests In Hong Kong, Chile So Differently?

Media coverage of the protest movements in Hong Kong and Chile contrasts sharply, tracing a line in US foreign policy that aims to buttress movements that benefit US imperialism while ignoring or demonizing those that challenge it. In several key ways, this dichotomy is apparent and palpable. On both sides of the Pacific, sustained civil resistance is rocking governments to their core. In Hong Kong, anger at a proposed extradition bill with mainland China erupted into huge demonstrations in June...

The History Of Hong Kong, Britain’s Colonial Legacy. Fast Forward To 2019

The reason Hong Kong was seized by England, on orders of Queen Victoria, was that Sassoon needed a logistics, warehousing, and distribution base for his opium operations. Similarly, the founding of HSBC, an event requiring permission of the monarch, was for the handling and laundering of Sassoon’s drug money, an expertise in which the bank still specialises today. The standard narrative tells us the HSBC was founded by Scotsman Sir Thomas Sutherland, who wanted a bank operating on “sound Scottish banking principles”, but that’s historical Photoshopping.
