Portlanders Mobilize To The ICE Facility For Fourth Weekend In A Row

Portland, OR – Despite a rainstorm, hundreds of Portlanders mobilized on Saturday, October 25 to the Portland ICE Facility to protest the deployment of the National Guard and increased ICE attacks, and to demand the city revoke the land use permit for the ICE Facility. One protester was arrested during the event. In less than a month the city can begin the process of revoking the permit for the ICE facility. “It is not [the Portland city council] that lends its permission to operate the ICE facility, but ours. As such, the decision is ours to end permissive behaviors to rogue groups [such as ICE] that seek solely to break our common bonds,” Jason Ohmann, a protester and member of the safety team at the protest stated, adding, “It is important to protest ICE to protect all the members of our community – we are not asking them to heed our wishes and stand down.

US Detains British Journalist During Tour After Israel Criticism

US authorities detained a British Muslim journalist on Sunday, apparently due to his criticism of Israel, according to the Council on American-Islamic Relations (Cair). Sami Hamdi was held by the Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) agency at San Francisco international airport during a speaking tour in the US. Hamdi had spoken at a Cair gala on Saturday in Sacramento, where he condemned Israel's genocide in Gaza. He was scheduled to speak at another Cair event in Florida on Sunday. Cair has described the detention as retaliation for Hamdi's criticism of Israel, calling it an "abduction". “Detaining a prominent British Muslim journalist and political commentator during his speaking tour in the United States simply for daring to criticise the Israeli government’s actions is a blatant attack on free speech,” the Washington-based Cair said in a statement.

Rodrick Johnson, 67, had just returned home from a trip to the hospital and was trying to get some rest. But in the early hours of September 30, bright lights suddenly flooded his apartment. A fleet of Black Hawk helicopters descended on his five-story building — a 130-unit apartment complex at 7500 South Shore Drive — shortly before armed, masked men stormed past the doors of the ground floor. “The next thing I knew, they were kicking my door in,” Johnson says. He and dozens of his neighbors were marched outside at gunpoint during the multiagency raid carried out by some 300 federal agents in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood. Black and Latino residents were zip-tied, separated by race and detained inside cargo vans, as South Side Weekly reported in the raid’s aftermath.

On the night of July 4, 2025, Meagan Morris and Autumn Hill departed the Dallas home they shared with several others to go to an immigrant solidarity protest. This was no small thing for either of the two housemates. A 41-year-old transgender woman, Meagan had been out of work since her collapsed neck vertebrae forced her to leave her job at UPS. Autumn had little political experience save for volunteering for a local nonprofit and once marching in a Pride parade. But with the Trump administration conducting violent immigration raids across the country in service of Trump’s mass deportation agenda, both Morris and Autumn Hill wanted to head to Alvarado for a “noise demo” outside the 700-bed Prairieland Detention Center.

AI tools are constantly evolving, and ​“with no one stepping in to create some guardrails, they will become harder and harder to regulate,” says Emma Pullman, head of shareholder engagement at the British Columbia General Employees’ Union (BCGEU) in Canada. The union, representing more than 95,000 members in the public and private sectors, is a long-term investor in Thomson Reuters and is pressuring the Toronto-based data broker to align its AI products with human rights principles. “As investors, we are thinking about this as a risk to our investments, but also as a social and ethical issue,” Pullman says.

Willian Giménez González, a known advocate for the rights of day laborers who was abducted by federal agents on September 12, is speaking out from ICE detention. He says that federal authorities transferred him from the Broadview, Ill., ICE facility, to a detention center in Michigan, to move him away from his supporters. “I believe I was moved to Michigan at the last minute because I had the support of the community, and because my lawyer and politicians were protesting outside the jail,” he said, referring to the Broadview ICE facility. “I believe that because I had people fighting for me, I was targeted for transfer to prevent my supporters from helping me.”

When Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers stormed through Santa Ana, California, in June, panicked calls flooded into the city’s emergency response system. Recordings of those calls, obtained by ProPublica, captured some of the terror residents felt as they watched masked men ambush people and force them into unmarked cars. In some cases, the men wore plain clothes and refused to identify themselves. There was no way to confirm whether they were immigration agents or imposters. In six of the calls to Santa Ana police, residents described what they were seeing as kidnappings.

Thousands Protest Outside Portland ICE Facility

Portland, OR – On October 12, thousands of protesters convened in front of the Portland ICE Facility in the pouring rain to stand against the deployment of the National Guard and demanding the permit of the ICE Facility to be revoked. A protest was called by Portland Contra Las Deportaciones (PDXCD) in collaboration with Portland for Palestine (P4P), the Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO), Revoke the ICE Permit (RIP) and Tesla Takedown PDX. Organizers like Cass Cano, detained last week by ICE and DHS while protesting, spoke out against the repression faced by protesters, as well as ICE’s continued terrorization of immigrants, stating, “They detained my comrades and are hoping we would be scared and stop fighting, but we won’t stop until the facility is shut down and ICE is out of Portland.”

When the Supreme Court recently allowed immigration agents in the Los Angeles area to take race into consideration during sweeps, Justice Brett Kavanaugh said that citizens shouldn’t be concerned. “If the officers learn that the individual they stopped is a U.S. citizen or otherwise lawfully in the United States,” Kavanaugh wrote, “they promptly let the individual go.” But that is far from the reality many citizens have experienced. Americans have been dragged, tackled, beaten, tased and shot by immigration agents. They’ve had their necks kneeled on.

Portland, Oregon was my sanctuary as a teenager. I was a weird kid, a label I mostly embraced. But being different in my hometown rural north Idaho was exhausting. When I needed to recharge myself, I would drive the nine hours to Portland to bask in the city that accepted me just as I was. Maybe that is the Trump administration’s problem with Portland today: it is literally a sanctuary city. Oregon became the first state to pass a sanctuary bill in 1987. Thirty years later, Portland passed a sanctuary city resolution. These laws prohibit state and city officials, including police, from cooperating with federal immigration enforcement. Since September, President Trump has been threatening to send National Guard troops into Portland, ostensibly to quell protests in what he calls a “burning hell hole.” Oregon lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, however, united to reject this federal intervention in the Rose City, and are working together to prevent it.

Chicago Residents ‘Refuse To Budge’ As ICE Terrorizes Communities

From hunting people down through the aisles of retail stores, to intentionally crashing into a vehicle on a residential street and then deploying tear gas against a gathered crowd of residents and protesters, agents with the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement have been wreaking havoc in Chicago as part of their “Operation Midway Blitz”. According to the Department of Homeland Security, federal agents have made more than 1,500 arrests in the greater Chicago area since September 8 when the operation was announced – although data reveals some of these arrests to be outside of the state of Illinois.

In May of this year, 404 Media published evidence that Illinois automated license plate reader data was being accessed on behalf of federal agencies like Immigration and Customs Enforcement as well as directly by law enforcement agencies across the country, including in Texas, who used the information for immigration enforcement and to monitor people seeking abortions.

Seattle, WA – Hundreds marched for Indigenous People’s Day on October 13, this year marking the city of Seattle’s first recognition of the holiday. Starting at the city’s Henry M. Jackson Federal Building where immigration hearings are held, drummers of all ages led marchers through the streets of downtown Seattle, ending at Pike Place’s Indian Park. Grief and pride resonated through the march, as ICE kidnappings, the genocide in Palestine, and missing and murdered indigenous peoples were mourned and honored through continued resistance.
